Paramount working on DS9 HD?

Yeah, I could swallow a widescreen DS9, provided it really was protected for 16:9 at the time. I don't mind some cropping here and there if the overall experience is better. The X-Files generally looks incredibly good.

The concern would be the first couple of seasons, because I would presume Marvin Rush shot it exactly the same as TNG. I suppose the compromise might be 4:3 for the early seasons and switching to widescreen from Season 3 or 4.

Basically I'd be happy if the TNG Remaster team were doing it. I know they explored widescreen for TNG but discounted it.

But I fear Paramount would go for whichever hack said they'd do it for the lowest fee, and we'd get some compromised and butchered attempt to upscale the SD master tapes.

I guess you'd call me an OAR purist then. If they director is filming for 4:3 but making it protected for 16:9, there will be nothing of interest in the sides of the frame anyway. Keeping the original aspect ratio would be better than a wide screen with nothing going on on the sides.

Yeah, I’d take a remastered Voyager as well. But as a Niner I’d definitely want to see them do Deep Space Nine first. But also, what “other shows and movies” are we talking about? Everything else either has already been remastered (some of the movies even multiple times) or was high definition to begin with. Deep Space Nine and Voyager are the only two Trek properties that remain at standard definition as of now.

Was TAS updated?
Depends on what you mean by “updated” I guess. Yes, as far as I’m aware they did a high resolution scan of the footage back then for the DVD release (downscaled for the DVD, obviously) which then a couple of years ago was released on high definition blu-ray. The show looks fantastic, last time I checked (provided you like the look of TAS, which I do). :)

Probably so.

The remasters have not exactly been a huge bank of money flowing in.

Pull a Galaxy Quest, and have the aspect ratio change when the Defiant uncloaks for the first time, then it stays wide for the rest of the series.
