Paramount going ahead with ST4 according to Engage

I believe the creator of the STWOK was not a Trekophile - Harve Bennett? And this movie is considered one of the best, if not THE best Trek film.
Yeah, Nicholas Meyer, the director and writer, didn't really know what Star Trek was when he was hired to direct WoK.

If this means that Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are back for (and at the same time Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are OUT of) ST4, that's GREAT NEWS!!! :techman: :bolian:

Couldn't be in better hands.

Absolutely. These two deserve another shot. If they can just get a more favourable release date and better marketing this time they may just be able to turn things around. Obviously the end product will have to be up to scratch, but I've every confidence in these two. The various call-backs and tributes in Beyond were deftly woven into the story without bashing the audience over the head with it, which is down to this pair.

I have some issues with pegg and jung's writing,I wished they did more on characters interaction. for instance, I would have loved to have seen kirk and spock talk to each other about their plans for leaving and later choosing to stay.

I wished they had done more on the spock and uhura relationship too. it was very obvious that before kirk's birthday party, uhura and spock got together the night before party, I wished we had seen them talking about their feelings too and have Spock tell her he is no longer interested in banging random Vulcan women to preserve his race.

overall, I am quite happy with pegg and jung and see room for improvement. they certainly have handled the characters more maturely than Orci, alex and Lindelof.

How so ?

I like Pegg's stuff and although I think he's badly miscast as Scotty, because of who he is I had faith in him delivering a script that had a lot more in common with classic Trek.

What we got was another identikit action adventure movie indistinguishable in tone from the two JJ movies, but not as good...

...that also had the characters nailed down in a much more pleasing fashion than the first two, no ridiculous plot holes, subtle easter eggs/callbacks, great humour, touching emotional moments etc...

I'm genuinely happy for you that you got that, because that's a big part of what I wanted from it.

I just found it flashy and vacuous.

I suspect the fourth one, assuming it gets made will be somewhat different I think. There'll be no 185million dollar budget for sure.

I'm actually hoping for a budget slashed to $80/$100m - the upshot being a lot of it would have to be shot on existing ship sets. Therefore a more 'talky' and character/plot driven movie - they'd have to save money wherever possible and hold the effects money for where it really counts.

It wouldn't solve all of my issues, but there's not much that can be done about the casting choices...

I can't see them going that low, that's TNG movie territory (adjusted for inflation of course), and we all saw how cheap and behind the curve they looked. I think it'll be more in the region of 120million, 150 max. But I agree it would force the team to get creative with the plot, like TWOK. I've said it several times before on these boards, I think a tense submarine style thriller would work really well. I don't think the next one will be an overblown OTT blockbuster, the money just won't be there, and to be frank, I don't think the audience is there either.

Are you not happy with the rest of the cast? I think it's been one of the Kelvin movies success stories.

Urban is perfect and Quinto pretty good. Saldana is O.K. and although I didn't like Pine much, he's grown into it somewhat.

I didn't like Cho and Yelchin, and much as I like him, Pegg's bloody awful.

I can partially agree with some of this. I think Cho and Yelchin simply did the job asked of them, but at the same time were never characters at the forefront so for me I'm fine with their performances as you don't really see that much of them, same with Saldana. Urban and Quinto I think have both been excellent, and though I felt like the jury was out on Pine at first, his Kirk has really grown on me.

I hope they re-image the ship sets too!!! The prior look wasn't very Star Trek IMO - white walls black floors never liked it. Clean up the bridge too less clutter
