Pan Am not cancelled yet...

Even though it's probably due to not-yet-renewed issues, it's pretty pathetic to have a season finale for a fall series in mid-February.

Wait what? I didn't know it was even back yet. I thought we only had one more episode in January and that was it. Didn't realize it got a full season. Either I'm out of the loop or they haven't advertised it very well.

I only knew about it because my DVR picked it up due to the series recording I have set for it. I never saw any advertising for it at all. At the end of the episode, the teaser for next week said that it will be the season finale (it did not state "series" finale but I think we can assume that's what it will be).

The episode that recorded this week falls just before Niko is approached by Kate's secret people to work for them. It did tie up a couple of loose ends, such as what happened with Dean and the brunette head honcho's mistress that he was fooling around with (she goes crazy and bashes her head into a window...seriously), and showed Laura having that nude photo shoot that showed up in a more recent episode. It also contradicted later information in the show, as this episode was all about Laura being a virgin, which doesn't match what she tells Ted in a later episode.

Bolded what I felt was the most important part. That would definitely explain why I wasn't aware of it. It kind of fell off my radar, because I think there's been a lot of confusion over what's being done with Pan-Am in general, and they didn't bother to let people know it was still going on. Doesn't sound like there will be a second season at all at this point. Sounds like they've given up.

The episode you describe sounds like something that was shot and then they decided not to use it until later, which could account for some contradictions. Sounds a lot like a leftover episode that at one point in time they meant to air in order but changed their mind about the direction things would take.

I saw about as much advertising for Pan Am before its debut as I did for any new show this past fall.

Most of the advertising happens on the same channel, so you need to be watching shows on that channel to be aware of their new stuff. Which is why channels keep programming for their existing audiences, and taking risks to expand even a little can be disastrous.

Still, ABC also took a risk with Once Upon a Time and that paid off. I was pretty sure that one was doomed.

Yeah, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about anything after Christmas. I thought it was well advertised previously to that, but it fell off the wagon when it continued in January. Almost nothing to remind fans that it's still on.

Shows don't usually get advertising after they've launched. The philosophy is sink or swim. In some cases, when a show is borderline and could be salvaged by an advertising blitz, it will get the help.

But the writing was on the wall for Pan Am - the ratings were simply too low, so it's understandable if ABC figured it wasn't worth throwing good money after bad. Just let it go.

Networks are used to most of their shows failing, and they plan for it. And next fall, there's a whole new raft of new shows that need those advertising dollars if they're going to have a chance of success.

That's not been my experience. I've always seen shows advertised showing what's coming in the upcoming episode for the week, but Pan-Am didn't even get that in January when they did before Christmas. But I agree that ABC likely felt it wasn't worth saving. Shame since it showed potential. It had a few really good episodes. It probably would have done better as a mini-series.

Yeah, I'm surprised by how well Once Upon A Time is doing. It's probably their strongest new show. But it does make me wonder what they've got in store for next season. They can't keep riding on the concept the characters not knowing forever.
