79 episodes of STAR TREK TOS. I think it was shatner, or someone else, who said that about a third of it was good, a third of it was bad, and a third of it was somewhere between...

What is your percentage??? Is Shatner being to nice? to harsh???

As an overall percentage of the show how would you, now years later, and having seen every episode 45 thousand times, how do you rate the over all series..???

I think Shatner was pretty accurate. Of course, it's all highly subjective... Although many of the episodes have held up well, some are glaringly deficient when it comes to today's productions. I think it only fair to rate these with the consideration of the budget limitations, available technology, and time constraints of the day.

Given that, I'd say Shatner was about right.

Yes, saying an episode was "OK" in my opinion means it didn't make you turn off the TV, but it wasn't paticularly good either. For me, that would be a description of, e.g. "Whom Gods Destroy". That one in the lowest quarter of all episodes, so if I still call that one "OK", it follows that less than 33% were bad. Much less, actually. I would say there were maybe 10 episodes you would have to call "bad". About ten, maybe a few more, that were excellent. The remaining sixty are split three ways between "good", "ok" and "mediocre".

It really depends on how you define "good" and "bad". It isn't that black and white!

What is your percentage???

Good question. A few years back, I gave each ep a Excellent/OK/Terrible rating while going through the DVDs, but I never calculated one overall result... --crunching--

Season 1: 9 Excellent, 19 OK, 1 Terrible
Season 2: 8 Excellent, 17 OK, 1 Terrible
Season 3: 3 Excellent, 19 OK, 2 Terrible

So, that's 20 Excellent (25%), 55 OK (70%), 4 Terrible (5%). While the overly large "OK" group could use some dividing up (with the addition of "good but not excellent" and "kind of bad, but not terrible"), I'll have to vote "80% or higher were good."

I dunno, as I get older TOS keeps looking better and better. Still, IMHO, hands down the best of the shows, and this is from someone who really likes all of them!

I was right
Harve Bennett: "I had only seen a few episodes of ‘Star Trek’ . . . .So, a bit clueless as to how I might make this thing I work, I sat alone in the projection rooms for three months and watched every episode of ‘Star Trek’ at least once. When I’d finally finished, I felt that en masse, the episodes were about one-third brilliant, about one-third okay, and about one-third ‘ugh.’"

I think Fry mentioned something similar on "Futurama" too.

"You remember...1966-1969, 79 episodes, about thirty good ones..."

I think a simple rating is neither fair nor correct.
Sure, there are some stinkers, but imo the "bad" episodes are still better than the good ones of other scifi serie...:p There's always something entertaining, or some good dialogue, etc. even in the least remarkable ones. From a today's viewpoint, I think it's the overall outstanding quality of TOS that matters, and which made TOS cult; not some episodes that are bad in comparison.

I agree with the statement but even the weaker episodes I usually enjoy - there are only a small handful of episodes that I find unenjoyable.

Totally agree....my guilty pleasure? SPOCK's BRAIN. I actually like that episode because I saw it when it first aired ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL those years ago...loved WONDER YEAR's parody of it too..

There are a few I find unwatchable.

However, when this show came out there was nothing like ti, everything about it, even the episodes that seem tired and repetitious now, were all new then. Give them credit for credit not just good television, but a legacy

I can honestly sit through every episode of the classic show.

I can't really say that about any of the rest, even some of TNG made me cringe.

Kirk1980, even 'The Alternative Factor'? :p

I can't sit through TNG's 'Shades of Grey' but then again it was a clip show. I can't sit through DS9's 'Profit and Lace' or 'Emperor's New Cloak.' I can't sit through VGR's 'Threshold,' 'Fair Haven,' or 'Spirit Folk.'

Weird how it increased one per show on the spinoffs...
