PACIFIC 201 - A Star Trek Film

Just beware of the shaky cam. It can be very annoying. Actually, sounds like the Battlestar reimagining in terms of shooting style.

Yeah, I think that the new Battlestar Galactica actually struck a good balance between looking like a live shooting crew and looking "cinematic".

But "shaky cam" is actually really hard to do well in a way that it's natural and not distracting/weird/obnoxious. So you can rest assured that we'll be erring on the side of caution there. And we'll most definitely be doing "style tests" so we know what we can do well, and to make sure we won't be perpetrating some awful movie-making sins or anything.

Just make sure your camera guy/gal knows how to tilt. That abominable tilt-jerk (I think there were two, actually) in the last Axanar scene really betrayed how lacking their production seems to be, quality control-wise and stuck out, visually, like a sore thumb. Ain't nobody got time for dat.

I actually seem to remember Tobias Richter saying that those jerks were added in post to add some tactile credibility to the visuals. Not entirely sure about that, but I do know there were some polarized reactions by those who noticed it.

That being said, we do have some pretty talented people to lend their support to this aspect of the production (myself included - I'm a pretty seasoned camera operator). No recognizable names, of course. But it's talent I trust.

Whoo! It's been a while since I was back here. Thought I'd share with you all a fun update in production. That's the fact that we've revamped our Romulan costumes! This doesn't represent the final form, but it's definitely a step closer to what we'll finally be putting on screen.

Our first impulse isn't to rewrite established screen canon. So even when the creators of ENT saved some money by reusing Nemesis costumes (which have essentially nothing in common with the TOS costumes), we're much happier to harmonize the costume discrepancies rather than retcon one or the other. The Romulan costume for Pacific 201 serves to bridge that gap, and take the best elements from both costumes to create something unique, sharp, and fitting for any noble Romulan.

A change we still would like to make (beyond making sure our costumes are more tailor-fit for our actors) is adding some more military ornamentation to the uniform. The Romulans in our film represent a special stealth forces branch (not all Romulan ships are inherently stealth ships in this era), and they'll have a unique patch that signifies this. Also, we're planning on making the belts and waist sash a little more tidy, with some kind of consistent spacing to make it look a little more professional.

New Trekyards interview with Eric Henry. He has some interesting ideas.

Looking forward to seeing this project develop, you have a really interesting way of approaching the design of the ships and the universe.

If I can make a request I would love more pictures of your revised NX class ship :bolian:

Really enjoyed your Trekyards episode too... Can't wait to see more from you an Pacific 201!

I've been off the board for a few years until recent events pulled me back in to see what was going on. Just saw about this today.......wow. Very interesting story and approach. Watching all the YouTube stuff now......love the research into naval history and NASA designs.

This production really encourages me.

Me too. Hope he can steer clear of CBS's lawyers!

I hope so too, but I think he will be ok. This is done on a very low budget, he is not paying himself, and although it’s a Star Trek story it’s completely original in terms of the ship designs, characters, uniforms, story, etc). Its originality is what attracts me to this project. However I would advice that he changes the logo from ‘Pacific 201, a Star Trek film’ to ‘Pacific 201, a Star Trek fan film.’
