Yowza indeed! I got the feeling that it was in The Big Goodbye that they came closest to developing a romantic relationship the normal way. That trip to the holodeck together really was a "stealth date" (something I have experienced in real life, incidentally!). If Data and Whalen hadn't accompanied them to Dixon Hill's office, who knows what would have happened? [Hint: I believe it would have involved the desk!Posted by kozara:
Yowza! "Do you think it would cause a complete breakdown of discipline if the chief medical officer kissed a starship captain in the middle of a staff briefing?"
"Let's try."![]()
It was not nearly forgotten at that point. There was a previous important P/C episode from season three, but for that, you'll have to wait until I get to season three!I'd love more. Like what are S3 P/C moments besides Allegiance? Were the writers (Richard Manning and Hans Beimler) playing with our emotions like the doppelganger there or retrieving something nearly forgotten?

I don't know; it is really bizarre, but at least it's good to know that his relationship with Anij was downplayed too. I suppose they were afraid that too much sex/romance would take away from ActionPicard, but I don't see why. James Bond managed it, after all.Did TPTB think that two movie romances would be too much? They didn't even let Picard kiss the Girl of the Week for some odd reason. It'd be natural for him to think about Bev and family after losing his brother and nephew in Generations. Hurt/comfort and friendship.
We have no reason to believe that he didn't share quite a bit. Beverly's surprise in that scene seems solely related to the duets, and who Picard has chosen to play them with. I'd be inclined to say that she just isn't a musician. We hear her humming in Cause and Effect, and while she doesn't have an awful voice, it's not exactly performance-worthy. Besides which, speaking as a musician myself, playing a duet with another instrumentalist is very different, and a lot easier, than accompanying a singer. This is simply an aspect of Picard's life that Beverly can't share, and that's why that scene in sickbay upsets her.Come to think of it, how much do you think he shared with Beverly about his time as Kamin, his lifetime as a husband and father? Beverly was surprised and a little sad that he played a duet with Neela Darren. Maybe Picard played his flute for Beverly and shared its deep meaning, but she didn't go the extra step of trying to duet with him? Instead he has to duet with the computer. (She can tapdance and runs the shipboard community theatre. I'd think she could belt out a tune.)

I think that the Premise was there a little bit more than you recognise. His long looks at her in Encounter at Farpoint have a certain something to them. His attraction to her is mentioned in the two first novels, and I don't think that would have been included unless it was the intention of the creators. "Desperately in love" I agree he is not. Interested in her, I maintain that he is. But I suspect that this is one of those things about which we'll just have to agree to disagree.Posted by mon capitaine:
I agree that the TBG is the only episode where we get mutual looks of recognition. It's usually one-sided.
If we ignore Naked Now and Attached for the moment the first season is about Bev chasing Picard whilst he is only dimly aware of it. TBG being about the only episode where Picard acknowledges any sort of attraction in those 2 looks. Of course Attached would have us believe that actually he was desperately in love with her during this time, but I don't think this is apparent from the episodes. So either it's a Changed Premise bolted on with the effect of shafting what went before or someone really should have told Patrick Stewart that that's what his character is supposed to be doing.
Wow! What keen powers of observation! The only question is... what does this symbolize for their relationship?Posted by mon capitaine:
^ Ah, Evolution. A Turning Point indeed. He actually gets to sit on his own desk.![]()
I think there's a sense in which that's true, but it also stems from the fact that we have different views of the developments that took place during the course of the series. You tend to favour the more aloof season one Picard, whereas I like him better once he's mellowed out a little bit. And I think Beverly's better once she's not chasing him quite so overtly. But this is just taste rather than anything concrete...I wonder if our differences stem from the fact that we are approaching this from our different trek-characters?
It's really weird, but I can actually see that.Posted by Gold Grizzly:
Perhaps she's got addicted to it, like a reality TV programme?

Back to The Big Goodbye and this stealth date then. After his little proposal that Bev joins him onthe holodeck, Picard pretty quickly starts inviting lots of other people. Is this because he never saw it as a date or because he did, panicked and immediately backed off?
