Overlooked franchises you'd like to see movies of...

Some great suggestions!
My personal listing-

Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone' - doubt it would stand much of a change considering how dark Elric is, I can just imagine a network OKing a show whose main character is sometimes called 'Woman Slayer'

Years back maybe not but I'm not so sure now. There's plenty of dark material on TV now. And I haven't read the books in a long time but he earned that soubriquet with an assist from Stormbringer, no? I think that would pass OK.

I've always wondered if someone could turn the material in Belgariad, Mallorean, Belgarath The Sorcerer, Polgara The Sorceress and The Rivian Codex into a fantasy series with wicked humor.

You might be right...

Elric is also just one incarnation of the Eternal Champion- if his series does well there are other characters to use the mantle. There is even foreshadowing since the different incarnations have met before.

Sapphire and Steel!

Reportedly, there's a new TV version in the works.

^Seriously? How did I NOT know this?! I can't wait to see what the new one is like. But they will have to find a male lead as beautiful as young David McCallum (a very tall order, that) to make it work for me.

Ever since I was a teenager (circa the paleozoic era), I have wanted to see a big screen, big budge, beautiful version of The Stainless Steel Rat book series. I think the technology has finally caught up to do these stories justice. It has "Hollywood Blockbuster Franchise" written all over it--an antihero with his own code of ethics, dark humor, adventure, family --er--"togetherness?". I guess the fact that I loved these so much says a lot about my deeply warped sense of humor.

The Stainless Steel Rat has been optioned, on and off, for forever. It's one of those projects, like the Logan's Run remake, that always seems to be in the works, but never quite gets out of development hell.

Then again, that used to be the case with Ender's Game and the Planet of the Apes, too.

One of these days . ...

I'd love to see what a movie remake could do with Otherworld.

Then again, it might not even need a "remake" as such. With very little rewriting, Otherworld could easily be made part of the Stargate franchise.
That looks kind of fun, in a goofy, cheesy kind of way. Is it available on DVD or streaming anywhere?

No DVD (or iTunes), unfortunately. :( But many of the eps are available on YouTube. And there is a quasi-officialish site called Otherworld Online which has a lot of info about the show.

One thing I have persistently tried to find out is if the rumor about the missing episodes is true. Supposedly there were 13 filmed. Only 8 aired, so there could be 5 missing ones. I have been unable to track them down or find any clips or images from them.

Apparently NBC is remaking Xena from what the news (HLN) said this morning.

That rumor is being widely circulated, but, alas, Lucy Lawless has already debunked it, claiming that it's just "wishful thinking" at this point.

Not that this is stopping the "news" from speaking all over the internet . ...

I wouldn't mind a well-written update on seaQuest. Especially given the problems of drought in California, and the progressively worse deterioration of our weather systems and climate change. The science-y side of seaQuest might be able to touch on those issues in a way other franchises wouldn't.

Pern was my Mother's favorite Book Series, so, I finally got into the Series to share it with her, before she passed (And on her last day, I actually played the first two disks of The first AudioBook for her, as I visited her and said goodbye, I've just recently finished the next to last Book on Audio. So, after a year and of half of listening to the Series, I would love to see a TV or Movie Series made from Books.

Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber would be great, too IMHO.

I think Warner Bros. has the rights to the Pern books, but I haven't heard any reports of movement on that property recently.

I remember hearing over a decade ago that Ronald D. Moore was developing a Pern TV series for the WB but left the project due to "creative differences." (This was way back, after he worked on Roswell but before Battlestar Galactica.)

Movies based off of the Dresden Files or the Iron Druid Chronicles books would be cool.

Unfortunately, the Dresden brand has been tarnished by the failed TV series. Would be cool though.

I liked the TV series. :(

On the subject of Jim Butcher, I think Codex Alera would make a great TV series. It could be basic cable's family friendly answer to Game of Thrones.

Thundercats. I still think they could make a kickass movie out of that.

3rd only to Transformers and He-Man, the 80s cartoon I most wanted a GOOD live action movie of is Bravestarr. I don't know how they'd handle a robot talking horse.

Not to mention the pseudo-Native American mysticism.

Gargoyles.

Seriously.

How has this hot happened yet?

I do wonder. I'm just disappointed that they didn't do a live action version of it back in the 1990s, when Jonathan Frakes could still play the live action Xanatos.

I'm not sure how you would do it but I'd like to see an adaptation of Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. And The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester.

Someone needs to do an animated TV adaptation of Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire! http://www.dominic-deegan.com/

Also, I miss 7 Days. :(

I love that show. I know it's a really terrible show. But seasons 1 and 3 were pretty entertaining. Season 2 really jumped the shark.

I think it's due a re-watch.

Variety is not in the habit of wild rumor-mongering and it's reported the same.

All the report is saying is it's in the early stages of development. NBC probably has like 500 properties in various stages of development. And 98% of them won't get green lit.

Hellboy 3 is "in development". So take the phrase with a grain of salt. No studio is paying $200 mill to get that movie made.

Probably not much of a deep-SF/F fan, so not many franchises to choose from which haven't been done in some form already. But I'd still like to see new/better movie (or more likely TV) versions of:

Asimov Robots/Baley
Dune
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (esp)

USA TODAY is reporting this morning that it's just a rumor.

"Sorry, Xena fans," etc.

The Moon is a harsh Mistress
I've been wishing for many years that someone would do a movie of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

...I'd still like to see new/better movie (or more likely TV) versions of:

Dune
Other than William Hurt's abominable "performance" as Duke Leto and Susan Sarandon's ridiculous casting as Julie Cox's younger sister(!) - not to mention hammy acting - what would you suggest as a better way to do Dune on TV?

Piers Anthony's Xanth novels or the Incarnations of Immortality novels, Alastair Reynolds' Revelation space, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.
