overated SCIFI movies

You know, I sat down to watch the international version on disc, since I bought the five disc version, and I can't even conceive of how one could enjoy Ford's narration. It adds nothing to the character, does not convey any additional plot or clear up confusion, and is delivered in such a nasally tone that it could believably create rumors that Harrison Ford deliberately sabatoged it.

Indeed. I think that is actually THE worst voiceover narration I have ever heard and one of the biggest reasons I was very disappointed in the movie when I first saw it. Even without that I probably still would have thought the movie was disappointing and overrated, but I think that was probably the worst thing about it.

Yes..totally agree. His narration caused me to almost fall asleep whenever I watch Blade Runnder; and it could be in the middle of the day.

The story isn't all that incredible either, IMO. I think it is highly overated, but does have some great effects...

Another overrated movie (or series of them): The theatrical cuts of the SW films.

I mean, for those who simply prefer the theatrical versions, that's fine. But cut the "raped my childhood" crap, ok? And stop trying to convince me that it makes a difference whether or not Han shot first.

I have seen the "raped my childhood" thing used a lot to dismiss critics of the special editions, but I have rarely seen anyone's criticism to be actually that simplistic.

And of course it makes a difference. If it makes no difference, why change it?

I'm not criticizing the theatrical cuts. I'm directing my ire against those who think that the SEs should never have existed (funny, I wasn't aware anyone was forced to watch them  ) and who question George Lucas' right - his absolute right - to alter HIS OWN WORK.

The theatrical cuts exist. The SEs exist. Everyone has a choice which to watch. What part of this progression escapes people?

If Stanley Kubrick, for example, was still alive today and chose to do a "special edition" of 2001, I wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't go foaming at the mouth or anything. I'd just shut the hell up and watch the original. Problem solved.

I do agree, though, that it took too long for the SW theatrical cuts to come out on DVD. That's the only thing on which I agree with that crowd.

You'll have to ask Lucas that. As I said, he made the films, he can change them at his leisure. He doesn't have to explain or justify himself to anyone.

Lucas? You're the one that implied that changing the Greedo scene made no difference. I'm saying that it makes some kind of difference, prima facie. Otherwise it wouldn't be worth the effort to make the change.
