overated SCIFI movies

I still don't get how District 9 was a mind blowing experience when after I left I wanted to slit my wrist and shoot myself, but perhaps I'm just clueless on such matters.

Just remember: down the road, not across the street.

... it and that was a mind-bottling experience.
Is that bottle recyclable? :D

Yeah, mind-bottling. You know, when things are so crazy it gets your thoughts all trapped, like in a bottle?

I agree with a lot of the previously mentioned films. Two movies I haven't seen mentioned yet were Independence Day and the Black Hole. I enjoyed both movies, having seen them in the theater, but I don't think they deserved the hype and some of the reviews they received.

One of the things that I feel is important to properly enjoy most scifi films, is getting the opportunity to see them in the theater. Films like 2001, TMP, and Alien were meant to be visual movies aside from the story. Seeing them on tv sort of takes away from the experience. I guess I am fortunate enough to have grown up in the era of good visuals evolving and that being said, I think much of the current stuff gives viewers a let down.

I think CGI is wonderful but, at times, the visual effects overshadow a mediocre story and it turns out a mess. It is great to be thinking this looks great, but what was the story I just saw. The Phantom Menace and the Matrix come to mind. Both were ok, but did the story really grab me? Just my 2 cents.

I'll grant you that INDEPENDENCE DAY was huge hit, but THE BLACK HOLE was a big flop in its day and I'm not sure that it was ever considered as a good movie. It's generally regarded as a misfire, so it can't really be overrated.

I may be the only person who'd put the Back to the Future movies in this category as well. They're okay, but nothing more than that IMO.

Back to the future 1 is brilliant, but 2 and 3 are ok. I see your point they are not as great as other films out there, but i am one of the BTTF fans who plans on building my own time machine at some point :D

Only science fiction?

The Dark Knight
District 9
Donnie Darko
Star Trek (2009)
The Incredibles
Being John Malkovich
Alien
Akira

Underrated:
The Happening
The Phantom Menace
Mad Max 2
Star Trek: Generations

I can't help myself. Just ignore this if you don't want to go off-topic.
Fight Club, Clerks, Superbad, The 40 Year-Old Virgin, Brokeback Mountain, Almost Famous, Kill Bill; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Office Space, A Christmas Story

While Independence Day was a huge hit at the box office, the critical response was tepid at best.

Of course, I'm definitely in the minority on this board, but as far as big dumb spectacle goes, I don't think you can do better than that movie.

It's pretty much a given that whenever there's a thread about over or underrated films that a lot of people just take it as an opportunity to either bash a film they don't like or talk up their favourites, regardless of said films' general "rating", which rather defeats the thread's purpose.

As far as films like ID4 goes, it was a huge blockbuster in it's day but (as far as I can tell) hasn't really maintained that standing since it's release.
So I guess it really depends on how you define how a film is rated. In the here and now, or when it came out? I can probably think of quite a few films that were huge on release but have since faded, if not disappeared from memory and conversely you get sleeper hits like say 'The Shawshank Redemption' which sank without a trace on it's release but quietly gained momentum on home video until it was recognised as one of the best films ever made.
It's certainly not an underrated film, despite being a non-starter at the box-office and I wouldn't say it's overrated either, it's a bloody good film and fairly recognised as such.

Are you sure? Seems like it would be easier to cut across and sever a bunch of arteries rather than try and cut one down and hope you get enough of it?

Overated in that they aren't as good as their reputation would require.........

2001
District 9
Blade Runner
Matrix

All have fantastic parts or FX or themes or acting or other fine elements, but they just don't seem to me to be as good as their rep.

I too, wonder why folks list movies that are considered barely 'average'

ID4 was a box-office hit---but I don't know anybody who thinks it's great though. Why include that?
