Spoilers Overall Season 3 Reviews

USS Fardell

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Overall
This season is improved upom the previous two. However, the storyline was much like the previous season's in that some railroading towards the end goal occurred. There are many story threads that go through the season. The episodes can be grouped into beginning, middle and end sections, with the Terra Firma episodes being the outliers. The Beginning being That Hope is You Part 1 through to Die Trying. The middle is Scavengers through to The Sanctuary. And the end is the confrontation where Osyraa takes over Discovery during the rescue of Su'Kal.
The beginning. The first four episodes were a good introduction to the new time setting, showing how things have changed over the course of the millenium, and especially due to the Burn. The prevalence of the Emerald Chain is shown in the first two episode. And the diminished state of the Federation is shown in the next three. In People of Earth and Forget Me Not, the both Earth and Trill are shown to have withdrawn in on themselves. Starfleet is also seen to be a fraction of its former self.
The middle. The situation that the Federation and Starfleet are in and the threat of the Emerald Chain are further fleshed out, as is the situation on Ni'var. The threat of the Chain is fleshed out in Scavengers and The Sanctuary. Unification III furthers the Burn storyline, while continuing the theme from People of Earth and Forget Me Not. It did it very well. However, the plot line about the black boxes was drawn out. Maybe over one episode instead of two. (Maybe Georgiou leaving the 32nd Century should have been at the beginning of the Section 31 series?)
The Concluding arc. This is where the various plot threads (except Georgiou's for obvious reasons) crash together. Tilly as XO was certainly an interesting choice. I would have thought either Neilsson or Owosekun would have been better choices. Owo may have been able to cope better when Osyraa was taking over Discovery. Su'Kal being the cause of the Burn (along with the location) did cause some 'eybrow rising' but it did work in the narrative of these final episodes. Not sure what to make of Saru staying on Kaminar with him though.
Overall, the season was better than it's two predecessors. There were still missteps (and likely) missteps, but it was better. I'm sure the next season will be better. 8.55/10.

Indeed, there’s a general feeling from this season that many of the plot threads could’ve used a bit more air to breathe
So, I'm doing a small snip from the review because this point stands out to me and sums up a lot of my feelings with current Trek. If Berman era Trek had a slow, plodding, but regular pace, Kurtzman Trek is working very hard to have multiple ideas but not always giving them time to expand fully. I think Season 3 bears that out largely because I love every plot point that comes up (aside from Grudge) and have an investment in them to one degree or another. But, there is a lot of meat there to unpack and it leaves me wanting more time with them.

So, more room to breathe would be nice. Just a little bit more.

Except for Grudge.

I haven’t got time for a full review, but I liked it less than the other two seasons, but thought the final five episodes were good.

I disagree that this season improved from the previous 2. it is the worst season of any star trek I have watch. I need to finally said this but Michelle cannot carry the show on her own. the other characters of the show are more like waxworks. tilly and saru's arc as captian was very poorly written and contrived. Book was wasted. overall this discovery now is just an generic sci-fi show.

The show has lost a lot of important weight that gave it something. Characters like Locca, Sarek, Pike and Spock and even Georgiou all been gone from the show has made the show feel so empty.

I also have a feeling the ratings of the show are so very bad at CBS all access because the show never trends and a lot of popular tv, sci-fi and comic sites that were reviewing episodes in season 1 or even 2 don't do that any more and I also notice that the budget this season was not there anymore like season 1. everything felt as if it was short in a room.

.

For all the issues I had, season 3 of Discovery joins Lower Decks and Short Treks as something that makes me hopeful for upcoming Trek, after the unfortunate first two seasons and depressing Picard. I'm hoping Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, Discovery season 4 and Lower Decks season 2 (and more Short Treks? please?) keep it up, and I'm wary of Section 31 and Picard season 2.

Haven't had a chance to re-watch the third season yet. I'll watch the whole thing again. Give my review. Then I'm cancelling my subscription to CBS All Access for the rest of 2021. I'll binge Lower Decks S2 and Prodigy when I pick up my subscription again right before new episodes of DSC, PIC, or SNW start up. Whichever of those three comes first.

But in brief: There were some things I liked better about the first two seasons, some things I liked better about the third.

Ultimately, I think jumping to The Future was the right move. DSC never felt to me like it ever really wanted to be a prequel per se. It's just that the first two seasons took place during what would technically classify it as one. I like that they don't put the sandbox back in place in time for TOS to happen anymore.

They took the characters in some places that I didn't expect and there were some twists I didn't see coming. Some things I thought we'd see more of, but I'm hoping that will come in later seasons.

That's pretty much it, until I re-watch it.

Prodigy will be on Nickelodeon. I think CBS AA/Paramout+ is supposed to get Nickelodeon shows 1 year after they air on Nickelodeon.

I don't have Nick, but my brother does. It's a necessity since he has a seven-year-old. So there's a good chance I might be watching Prodigy, or at least some of it, with The Next Generation of the family.

I think there are going to be a lot of get-togethers, in one form or another, once the Quarantine is over. So many people I haven't seen in the flesh in forever.

EDIT: Hell, might as well start re-watching it right now.

I did not enjoy this season as much as the previous two. It started out with a lot of promise, but ultimately failed to deliver the world-building I was expecting given the clean slate they entered the season with. While the character development was better, Discovery this season has become more about emotional beats than about science fiction storytelling. Burnham is constantly crying, Sammets has one unprofessional outburst after another. Tilly is appointed XO for no good reason which is followed by the corniest "say yes" scene where everyone smiles and feels great about it. The burn was caused by emotions and being "triggered". Gray wants to be a real boy again and cries about it. It's not surprising given that the showrunner (Paradise) claim to fame before this was work on the Originals, which is a teen-fantasy soap opera.

That said, Vance has got to be the greatest admiral ever, so the season definitely has that going for it. They also made more of an effort this season to give the bridge crew more than zero lines of dialogue, which is a step in the right direction. Also, the show's VFX is nothing short of stunning.
