Over 35? What are your favorite current bands?

Only in Iceland do rock bands have tuba players! :techman:  But seriously, I liked this song. The band might be a wee bit pop-ish for my taste if I heard more, but I did like this particular song.

Yep they are uniquely Icelandic but I wouldn't really call them a rock band nor are they pop-ish. I think Hopp. is their most accessible song.

Try Carbon Leaf. Get Indian Summer off iTunes and give that a try. If you like that, try Shadows in the Banquet Hall, which is early REM-like.

These guys were pretty good too, based on the snippets on iTunes. I'm buying a couple of songs to hear more. Thanks!

I'm 36. Does Cold Play and Daughtry count?

I usually listen to oldies and all things 80"s that were cool.

I am 33 and feeling much the same as you are, PKTrekGirl. Ten years ago I was always in the know, on the cusp, finding great bands all the time. Now... :klingon:

But here are a few you might want to try out:

Eskimo Joe: I also love their song Breaking Up and their cover of the classic Pixies tune Hey.
Elbow: These guys are my current favorites and absolutely amazing. They have a new album dropping in two weeks. I am really excited.
Faker: I don't know why but these guys are really good and even better live.

But I also love Daimen Rice, Travis, Teddy Thompson, The Killers, The Scissor Sisters, Breaking Benjamin, Keane and Feist, which all more or less new to the scene.

I also still fall back on old favorites like Annie Lennox, Tori Amos and Bjork. Of course, my old CD's are still being used frequently. Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and several others find their ways into the player often. Actually, Sound Garden's "Blackhole Sun" is played at least once a week at a volume strong enough to rattle my fillings. But I think I am moving faster into the musical past these days than forward. My new found intense love for 70's rock bands, Dusty Springfield (who I have always adored) and Shirley Bassey will attest to that.

Current bands? None.

I mostly agree. I just don't hear the talent, effort and rock musicianship in newer bands that I do in those who have survived or become "classics". Most sound like the garage bands I used to hear in my neighborhood who practiced endlessly and never got any gigs.

I do hear occcasional snippets on television that I like. But that's about it. So if anyone has recommendations, let 'em fly.

Is The Brian Setzer Band too old to qualify?

Also, the desire and need to know the most current music dwindles as you get older. You grow past it and it just isn't a priority anymore. (Like the bitchin'est cars and the hottest girls at school). You become more concerned with other things. (Like physical ailments and the best route to drive somewhere :D)

Sam Roberts Band: These guys are recent, and like the Hip, generally play some pretty good rock music. They're actually somewhat Springsteen-esque, in my opinion. Some songs, again: "Brother Down", "Bridge to Nowhere and a live cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Steel Rail Blues".

Brother Down is a great song! :techman: And I do mean a GREAT song! Downloading that whole album right now.

Don't think they are Springsteen-esque (and believe me, I've made a life ambition out of Bruce Springsteen  )...but they are nevertheless totally cool.

This is one I want to hear alot more of.

Haha, I'm only a casual fan of Springsteen, so I'll totally take your word on that.

Glad you liked them, though! :D

I'm 38 and don't listen to any newer modern bands. I don't find any of it compelling. I'm fairly content to live in the 80s and 90s for the most part. I'm currently listening to Duran Duran. That pretty much says it all.

Sure they do!

I've not heard that much Coldplay except the basics from the radio, but I love Daughtry myself. IMO the only decent thing to ever come off American Idol.

Didn't Coldplay sample Kraftwerk for one of their songs? If so, I will respect them for that, since Kraftwerk is my favorite band of all time. :techman:

I liked Eskimo Joe and just downloaded a few more of their songs to try out.

Elbow was good too. Although I love this one youtube comment that was made:

Aside from the singer looking like an alcoholic middle aged plumber this is pretty sound music.

:guffaw:

I've not heard all of them - I'll check them out as well.

Oh yes. Listening to them right now. Positively love 'em. :techman:

Especially Brother Down (which IMO is a kick-ass good song...and the video is fun too)...but several of the other songs I have downloaded here are really good too.

Are they known much outside Canada yet? Because they should be!

I don't believe they are. We tend to produce a lot of awesome bands that barely make a splash south of the border. The Hip are a great example, as they're probably one of the biggest bands in Canada, but they're an unknown, generally, in the States.

I can attest to that. I've never heard of them until I was introduced to them by another Canuck on this board. A very good band.

Coldplay makes me want to cut myself.

I still listen to lots of older stuff (and newer stuff by older bands that nobody hears any more - you can usually only hear new music by old bands on the satellite radio services these days). There are a few "newer" bands that I like these days...

Foo Fighters (Maybe not quite in the 10 year range, but very close)
KT Tunstall
Starting Line
Hot Hot Heat
Chris Cornell (with older bands, but his two solo releases were only in the last 10 years)
The Donnas
Solea ("Apotheke" and "Where You Belong" are two favorites)
Smoking Popes (Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG52F8EL-kE "I Know You Love Me" - yeah, they're older than 10 years, but they didn't release a full length album until only the last 10 years.)

among others...

I'm 40 and in my case, thanks to SIRIUS (subscription lapsed now) Hard Attack, I've gotten into the Symphonic Metal & Power Metal genres more in the last year or so. These groups represent pretty much all of my CD purchases over the last couple years.

Groups I heard firsthand on SIRIUS:
-Dragonforce (UK)(speed metal, great vocals)
-Kamelot (originally an American band, but beyond amazing with Kahn as vocalist)
-Nightwish (Finland)(best with Tarja, but still good)
-Lacuna Coil (Italy)(sometimes a little like the heavier Linkin Park stuff, amazing female vocals + male vocals with occasional death grunts)

Other related or similar groups:
-Sonata Arctica (Finland)(great vocals, similar musical style to YJ Malmsteen)
-After Forever (Finland)(operatic quality female vocals)
-Epica (Finland)(founded by Mark Jansen of A.F. above)(again amazing female vocals)
-Circus Maximus (Norwegian band very similar to Dream Theater)
-Elvenking (Italy)(folk-metal fusion, including violin on most songs)
-Conception (Norway)(Roy Kahn's band before Kamelot)

The main thing is powerful, clear vocals and 95% of the time a very epic feel to the music. I rarely get into the grunting death metal vocals, but a few of the above bands (Elvenking, Lacuna Coil (the male vocals) and After Forever/Epica) have some of this style in their songs and in smaller doses it fits the songs.
In recent years I had actually been getting more into even older, mellower stuff (Beach Boys, The First Class, various Celtic stuff including Celtic Woman) than I had previously listened to. Before that it was pretty much always "classic" and hard rock and more mainstream metal (Maiden, Priest, etc.).

Of those, my favorites are Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Like I said, I lean toward that grunge/alternative border. Which is why I like bands like Fuel.

I'm only 32 and hence ineligible for this discussion. However, I just wanted to show off about the fact that I am going to see Stone Temple Pilots in 6 weeks time. :D

Carry on ;)
