Over 35? What are your favorite current bands?

So I thought I'd ask the question to those who 'came of age' during the eras of everyone from Queen to Bruce Springsteen to The Police to Van Halen to Bon Jovi (round 1) to U2 to Guns 'n Roses to REM to Nirvana to Pearl Jam to NIN: what newer bands (if any) do you enjoy?

I'm not sure I can help you. Although I'm 39, I was listening to hardcore punk during the early part of the period you describe, and had made a lateral move over to gothic and industrial music during the later part.

And I mostly listen to classical music now: my most recent order from amazon.com included a Baroque opera (Atenaide by Vivaldi), string quintets by Luigi Boccherini, and string quartets by Elliott Carter. So it sounds like our tastes were always pretty different.

For what it's worth, I do also enjoy black-metal bands like Marduk, Behemoth, Akercocke, Enthroned, Unlord, and Endless Dismal Moan. But I seriously doubt any of them will appeal to you.

But as someone in the 'over 35' category, I have begun to wonder if others in that age group (or close to it) are experiencing the same feeling I am: that being that there are fewer and fewer new bands each year that I actually come to enjoy.

Well, I'm not sure I could say "this band is great" or "that band is great" with the newer stuff, but there are a lot of bands I really like specific songs/tracks by (in some cases the particular song I like is atypical for the group). So anyway...here's a list of some of my favourite more current tracks (with artists):

AFI - This Time Imperfect

Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Sum 41 - Hell Song
Deftones - Change

Bands still active in past couple of years:
Arctic Monkeys
White Stripes (their first album slays)
Queens of the Stone Age

Oddly I can't come up with much in the past ten years but if I were to go back 15 there'd be a laundry list.

By "current bands" you must mean:
They have not broken up
They still make studio albums (of original material)
Members are in their 20's or 30's
They aren't regulars on the casino circuit

I guess my favorite "current" band would be Fountains of Wayne. Their 2007 album Traffic & Weather is excellent.

As far as classic bands go, this might be a good time for fans to rediscover R.E.M. They just released the album Accelerate; it's earning the band their best reviews in at least 15 years.

Hmmm.

The most "recent" bands that I like right now are:

Switchfoot
Green Day
Train
The Killers
Puddle of Mudd
Matchbox 20 (yeah, yeah....I know)
Five for Fighting (for the mushy stuff)

I really haven't been keeping up the last few years, certainly not the way I used to.

System of a Down is one band who managed to break through and get my attention, though from what I read, they have now gone on indefinite hiatus. If Armenian-flavored, socially-conscious and largely unclassifiable rock appeals, these guys may be worth a listen.

The other which comes to mind is another Los Angeles band called Ozomatli, possibly a little easier to classify (Latin /funk /jam /world beat /etc.), but still crossing multiple genre boundaries within single tracks. Great for parties.

OP: What's wrong with RUSH, anyway?

Nothing wrong with RUSH....or any of the bands mentioned in my original post.

I'm just trying to find some new bands to listen to. You know...broaden my horizons and all that. ;)

well, Im 34 but there's a lot of stuff I missed out on in the 90s, especially the earlier 90s b/c I wasn't really listening to music much back then other than the typical top 40 stuff that would come on the radio. Now I have time to listen to stuff while Im on the computer & Ive been enjoying Bjork, Portishead, NIN, Radiohead, the Cure...all good stuff.

Of those, my favorites are Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Like I said, I lean toward that grunge/alternative border. Which is why I like bands like Fuel.

I'm only 32 and hence ineligible for this discussion. However, I just wanted to show off about the fact that I am going to see Stone Temple Pilots in 6 weeks time. :D

Carry on ;)

Well, 35 was not exactly a 'hard' cutoff or anything. ;) And if you like STP then you get the idea of what I've liked in the past....and are welcome to drop some suggestions.

Cool that you are going to see them! Lucky you!

-----------------------

Alot more suggestions to listen to tonight when I get home! This is fun! Spent most of last night on YouTube and iTunes and listened to alot of the suggestions here and downloaded some new stuff. Will probably do the same tonight.

Well, I listened to some punk back then...but it was mainly the more well known punk groups like The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, etc. And even that wasn't all the time. I liked it...but I liked 'new wave' bands more - The Police, etc.

However, you must not remember me from the classical music threads. ;) My iPod is about 40% classical...so I'm already with you there. Season tickets to the symphony and all. :p

Never heard of any of the black-metal bands you list though. I was not really a fan of heavy metal. Bands like Guns & Roses, Van Halen, & Golden Earring, were about the heaviest I went.

I know. I'm a wuss. :p

Ah!

No, in my case, it was all hardcore, all the time: groups like GBH, Discharge, the Dead Kennedys, MDC, and (from my home town) SNFU. If it wasn't fast as hell, I wasn't interested.

Cool! But remember--you did ask for bands. ;)

If you want, I can recommend some contemporary classical composers.

A good place to start would be the 21st Century Classics series from Naxos--they're all budget-priced, and most of them are quite good.

They also have an American Classics line which includes a number of contemporary composers. I'm particularly fond of the music of Gloria Coates.

That's all right. Blast beats, high-pitched guitars, screaming vocals, satanic lyrics, and lo-fi production that make it sound like the music was recorded in a forest are definitely not for everyone. ;)

Try Carbon Leaf. Get Indian Summer off iTunes and give that a try. If you like that, try Shadows in the Banquet Hall, which is early REM-like.

I'm only 21, but I second this... though I think their best might be "Echo Echo" (not sure if this is on iTunes, I own the CDs).

Devo
Los Straitjackets
The Who
Led Zeppelin
The Clash
The Ramones
The Cramps
The B 52s
Beau Jocque and his Zydeco Highrollers
Dick Dale

I am 33 and feeling much the same as you are, PKTrekGirl. Ten years ago I was always in the know, on the cusp, finding great bands all the time. Now... :klingon:

But here are a few you might want to try out:

Eskimo Joe: I also love their song Breaking Up and their cover of the classic Pixies tune Hey.
Elbow: These guys are my current favorites and absolutely amazing. They have a new album dropping in two weeks. I am really excited.
Faker: I don't know why but these guys are really good and even better live.

I liked Eskimo Joe and just downloaded a few more of their songs to try out.

Eskimo Joe are one of the best bands here. I still find now at 33, I listen to the same radio station I did when I was 19, as there is nothing better than triple j (hate commerical radio with a passion)

Other good bands from Australia - include Something For Kate (songs like Monsters and Electricity, I'd recommend, as well the song which most fans now - Captain ), Powderfinger and a band that called Big Heavy Stuff and song called "Birthday". The only spot I've seen it is on their myspace site. Also check out John Butler Trio.

Also one more band worth checking - a band called Rocket Science, which feature organ solos and the theremin on some tracks (like Copycat - where the start is awesome)

Yep. I ended up downloading about 4-5 of their songs. On the mellow end of my taste, but still liked 'em.

Thanks auntiehill.

I'm already a fan of Green Day and Matchbox 20, and I also like some stuff by The Killers and Train. Although I really, REALLY hate Pat Monahan on his own. That one song he's got going now is all manner of dumb. Whenever it comes on XM radio, I mash my back button and listen to whatever was on before it until the doggne thing is over.

I've don't recall hearing any Switchfoot or Puddle of Mudd...although I might just not know them by name. I'll check them both out. Thanks!

The only time I like any of that "death metal" stuff is when Pablo Francisco is talking about them. :guffaw:

Linky

That was pretty good, but I prefer Brian Posehn's "Metal By Numbers".

Well, all I have to say about Metal By the Numbers is: :wtf:

Must be an acquired taste. ;)

I agree about Eskimo Joe - they are pretty good. After listening to several bands out of this thread over the past couple of evenings (with many more to listen to this evening), the stats are:

Sam Roberts Band - downloaded everything I could get my grubby little paws on - about 30 songs (two full albums and a single), and if I could get on iTunes Canada I'd have downloaded more because they have a new single out that kicks ass, but it's not on iTunes U.S. yet.

However, I have listened to it here about 10 times: http://www.myspace.com/samrobertsband

:D Them Kids is a kickass song!

Arcade Fire - downloaded about 6 songs and will probably download more.

Eskimo Joe - downloaded 5 songs and will go back and try more.

Carbon Leaf - downloaded 4 songs and might download more, although they are on the mellow side.

Fountains of Wayne - downloaded 2 songs but will definitely go back when I have more time and listen to/download others.

I have also listened to several songs by your suggestion Something for Kate, and plan to download some of their stuff. Although the best song I've heard so far is not one of the ones you suggested, but a song called Deja Vu. Love that one!

I also love FoW, myself. Pure, unashamed power pop, you've gotta love it! My personal favourite album is Welcome Interstate Managers, but Traffic and Weather rocks, too. :D

And I agree with you about "Them Kids", it's a pretty awesome song. I'm looking forwards to the new album!
