Over 35? What are your favorite current bands?

There have always been music polls/threads on this board, and I've always read them with interest and participated. I listen to a fairly wide variety of music on XM radio and have all sorts of stuff on my iPod.

But as someone in the 'over 35' category, I have begun to wonder if others in that age group (or close to it) are experiencing the same feeling I am: that being that there are fewer and fewer new bands each year that I actually come to enjoy.

So I thought I'd ask the question to those who 'came of age' during the eras of everyone from Queen to Bruce Springsteen to The Police to Van Halen to Bon Jovi (round 1) to U2 to Guns 'n Roses to REM to Nirvana to Pearl Jam to NIN: what newer bands (if any) do you enjoy?

And by 'newer' bands, I'll be generous and go with anyone who has STARTED their more 'visible' careers in, say, the last 10 years or so. But the more current the better.

I guess where I'm really going with this is that I'm getting bored with my iPod and am looking for some new music to download that I won't end up hating.

So I'm asking mainly people who came of age liking alot of the music I liked - bands like the above.

Are you guys still sitting around listening to only Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and RUSH? Or have you found some gems among the wannabes of today that are worthwhile?

And please don't give me any pop musicians in the mix. The only American Idol contestant I have ever liked even a little bit was Chris Daughtry. :p

Try Carbon Leaf. Get Indian Summer off iTunes and give that a try. If you like that, try Shadows in the Banquet Hall, which is early REM-like.

Dunno how new some of these are but I like:

Incubus(love Dig!)
Pink Spiders-Little Razorblade
Buck Cherry
Modest Mouse-Float On
Really like Postal Service-I'm going to wear their cd out, I swear
The Teddibearz
the new Weezer tune Pork&Beans is pretty catchy
I'm pretty fond of the Gorillas(Guerillas? I can never remember) especially Clint Eastwood

FYI-I saw every one of those old bands in concert at least once except Bon Jovi-always seemed like something else was going on when they hit town-oh, and I was too stoned/drunk to remember NIN's performance.(Ah, youth!)

I'm 38. Does Dave Mathews count as a newer band?
Actually, of late, the only new music I really listen to is John Mayer. Kid's got talent. Of course any new releases by older bands have got my attention also, but as far as new-new...yeah...I think just John Mayer.:wtf:

I'm not over 35 (I'm 21) but my musical tastes to correspond well to some of the bands you listed, so here's some suggestions for you:

The Tragically Hip: They're not really new, but unless you're Canadian (and I don't think you are), then you probably don't know them. They first got big in the late-80s, here, and have pretty consistently released good music since then. They're basically straight up rock and roll. Some songs: "Poets" (live), "In View", and "Yer Not The Ocean", the latter two being from their last album.

Sam Roberts Band: These guys are recent, and like the Hip, generally play some pretty good rock music. They're actually somewhat Springsteen-esque, in my opinion. Some songs, again: "Brother Down", "Bridge to Nowhere and a live cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Steel Rail Blues".

The Arcade Fire: They're the current darlings of the Canadian indie scene, and they write some amazing music. I'd describe them as kind of like a cross between R.E.M. and the Talking Heads, if I had to. "Intervention" (with random, unrelated video), "Keep the Car Running" (live) and "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels).

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings: You might have some trouble tracking these guys down, but if you can, I recommend 'em. They play... hmm... kind of folk\country-rock, it's very hard to describe, but there are lots of classic rock influences in their music. "Water or Gasoline" (live) and "Acadian Driftwood" (live, and unfortunately poor quality cover of The Band)

That's some thoughts off the top of my head. If you like any of them, let me know, and I can hit you with a few more recommendations, probably.

Severe talent! Love brushfire fairytales!

Canadave is right-Arcade Fire is pretty good, too.

I stumbled across The Soundtracks Of Our Lives(band) about 2 years ago-their selftitled album rocks. Very talented with a varying sound from song to song.

There's also a Christian Rock band I like-and I'm the last word in agnostic. They're called Superchick and they have a no doubt feel to them. Not blatantly throwing God in your face, either. I didn't even know they were Christian rock-got a free copy of their cd and listened to it for weeks b4 I found out.

Mars Volta
Arcade Fire
The Decemberists
Bang Camaro
DeVotchKa
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Harris
Auto Interiors
Deathcab for Cutie
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
Count Zero

just to name a few

There are a few new(ish) bands I listen to besides the classic stuff (I'm 41 BTW). such as:

Coldplay
Goldfrapp
Ladytron
Kaiser Chiefs
Scissor Sisters

Style-wise they're a pretty mixed bag - Britpop, glam rock, electro and indie, but then I do have pretty varied tastes in music ;)

Wow! Alot of suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming.

I specifically didn't list more recent bands I listen to in my initial post...but I tend to like bands on the grunge/alternative end of things, although I'm also good with more mainstream stuff like Matchbox Twenty. I don't want to listen to a bunch of Pearl Jam clones or anything because no one can be as good at being Pearl Jam as Pearl Jam, and no one can be as good at being Eddie Vedder as Eddie Vedder. But I do tend to like bands that are heavy on the bass and that Eddie Vedder-esque grunge voice.

However, some of the 'newer' (meaning, the last 7-10 years or so) bands from whom I've found a few songs of interest have been:

Lifehouse
3 Doors Down
Fuel
The Goo Goo Dolls
Remy Zero
Daughtry

On the flip side, if I hear Pat Moinahan and his moronic new single on the radio one more time, I just know I'm gonna hurl. Same goes for that Natasha Bedingfield chick who pretends to be Alanis Morissette. And no one can get me to mash the 'change channel' button faster than that Jack Johnson guy and his idiotic 'music'.

I'll download a few songs tonight from iTunes and see what I come up with.

That sounds like quite the mix there. Think I'll check it out!

Newer bands.. not a lot, though there are a few:

Jake Shimabukuro: The Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele. Most people know him by his rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps that has been a fixture on YouTube for ages
Folk Uke: Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson (daughters of Arlo and Willie respectively) on ukulele and guitar
The Ukulemes:A ukulele cover band (see a pattern? lol)
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes: A Punk cover band. That is a punk band who covers and punkifies other songs

There are others, but I'm too lazy to think of any more!

Yeah, they cover a lot of ground, and there are a lot of influences in their music, but that gets a large part of it... lol. I'd suggest checking out Neon Bible, it's their second album and it sound absolutely epic. One of the tracks I posted, "Intervention", is the album-cut of that song from Neon Bible, which should give you a good idea of how it sounds.

And the first winner is.....

Brother Down is a great song! :techman: And I do mean a GREAT song! Downloading that whole album right now.

Don't think they are Springsteen-esque (and believe me, I've made a life ambition out of Bruce Springsteen  )...but they are nevertheless totally cool.

This is one I want to hear alot more of.
