Over 18's showings?

I was checking Vue, my local cinema just for general times on friday, and I noticed there was an over 18's showing.

Does anyone know why? It's still rated as a 12A, so what benifit is there for an over 18's showing? My only thought is to minimalise the crowds.

Your not in the states I take it?

Nope, that would be the UK.

It's generally for adults to enjoy 12A films kiddy-free.

The Return of the King was ruined for me by some little schmuck talking during the epic end battle scene. Ever since then I've tried to go to over-18 screenings on a school night to make sure that any film I really want to see isn't ruined by tiny kids that just can't shut up.

Vue do Over-18 screenings but they're no diference to the normal film.

It just reduces crowd size and makes sure there are no kids!

This is brilliant. They ought to do this in the states.

They don't do over 18 screenings in the US? It's a great idea, and usually will attract a solid crowd as I've always found a fair number of people come later at night to enjoy the film without the squeals of little kids or perhaps more irritatingly the messing around of those in their early teens (ruined Signs for me, not that there was much to ruin). Someone should suggest it to a cinema chain over there.

There are a number of theatres, mostly in the LA or NY areas, experimenting with over 21 showings so that they also serve alcoholic beverages. The Arclight in LA is one such.

Australia has had "Gold Class" cinemas for years now. I saw ROTS at my local here. Gold Class is over 18(legal drinking age here). You sit in your own separate recliner, get served drinks and food(at a cost)and generally have a boutique cinema experience.

I reserve it for special cinema experiences and thus have tickets for ST for next Tuesday 12/5.

There is a theater near me that has 18+ showings. It still won't stop the cell phone people and the overactive bladder people though!

The Arclight has 21+ showings where there's alcohol, but I don't see the point of an 18+ showing.

It keeps the bulk of the retarded brain dead teeny boppers out.

I think it sends a message that "This session is for people who actually want to watch the movie!!!" rather than those who want to sit in a large dark room texting their friends.

Oh wonderful.

Now, instead of talkative kids, you have to worry about someone getting sloshed and mouthy.

It would be nice to have a movie without kids, but I'd be a lot happier if they banned food and phones as well. Better yet, just ban everyone except me, and I'd enjoy it much more...

^ Since the ticket price is around $40, people here in Perth view it as a boutique experience - you go there for a special film that you don't want ruined by mongoloid Gen Yer's with mobile phones. It's mainly couples so it's intimate and nice. In that case, I think most people are respectful and quiet, just as you would be moreso at something like the opera or a play at the theatre.

I have been to two sessions now(third next week for ST)and have only ever found it to be quiet and a joy.

Grownups have abandoned watching movies in theaters in America - they all have their home-theater systems set up and ready to go.

There are a few pub-theaters in Portland, but they rarely get first run movies, Later this summer I'll enjoy a repeat viewing of Star Trek with a pint of a local microbrew.
