Well, if someone's threatening to sue your website for comments a libellous/slanderous (whichever it is) member has made, surely you want to make sure that there are no comments made lest it's used as evidence in the lawsuit.
By banning the subject it means there are no comments about it, and so no potentially libellous comments in the future.
It should never have come to that, and Shaun really should have done something before there was any talk of legal action, but given the circumstances of the banning, I really can't say I blame him.
As to OG, I treat it like the Ian Levine forum and (presumably, since I've never been there) DWO - a nice place irrespective of the people in charge. It'll be a shame when it goes, as I've not found a Doctor Who forum as diverse as it...
You "can't say you blame him" for ignoring numerous emails and PMs, until it finally escalated to the mention of the word lawsuit? You don't think it might have occurred to him "Hey, maybe I should do something about this?" at some point along the way instead of sticking his head in the sand?
And you can't blame him for actually banning people simply for mentioning the publisher or the name of the book?

And if once someone threatens you with legal action for libel/slander for comments someone made about the book, you can either ban it, and ensure that there's no more libellous comments made period, or you can carry on and hope that no-one else carries on the slander, in which case you're running the risk of more comments being made, and adding more fuel to the legal fire. It's ridiculously extreme, but when it comes to threats like that you have to protect yourself.
So the idea of simply stopping the person who is actually posting the libel never occurred to Shaun?
