Outpost Gallifrey/Doctor Who Forum To Close

OmahaStar shocking, I have reported a few threads that I thought went a bit far (the "Lets stalk Matt Smith" thread) but never got a reply and they never got closed.

Oh, it happens. Actually, where's Steve Roby? He's got a crazy Shaun Lies story about that. Let's see if I can find a link here ...

Linke One

Link Two

One of Shaun Lies' "friends" decided it would be a jolly good idea to start trolling a book publisher who happens to post on OG. He pushed it to libel, and the publisher requested assistance from the forum moderators and Shaun many times, each time being ignored. It was only after he mentioned possible legal action that Shaun deemed him worthy of a "fuck off" reply. He was banned, and all mention of his company - which publishes only Doctor Who related material - is forbidden discussion. Anyone with a link in their sig to the publisher had their sigs edited to remove the links.

And now, the big link with emails, copies of everything, straight from the publisher.

Ironically I hadn't heard of the new Iris Wildthyme book before that whole thing blew up (it's over three years since I was a member of OG) and immediately bought a copy. So one small bit of good came out of that situation.

I did have some dealings with Mr Lyon myself years ago and it became clear pretty quickly that he was a man with both a massive ego and a complete inability to handle even the slightest criticism or questioning of his decisions.

It's funny, I used to go to OG all of the time. I never really posted there but would look at their news regularly before the new series was announced. Literally, for years I'd check regularly, say once a month or so, to look for news about a new series. I knew that eventually there would be one and I figured that would be the first place I would find out. Sure enough, one fateful day, the new series was announced and I learned there first.

I did browse through the forums occassionally. Wow, did it change before and after the new series. After the new series was announced, I stopped visiting.

The guy who runs (ran) the place always seemed a bit full of himself to me and his announcement reaffirms that. Basically, he's not going to pass it along to someone else. While the OG forums didn't appeal to me, they appealed to a lot of people. It's too bad he's shutting them down.

Mr Awe

I was not a big fan of the new series sections, but I was a reasonably frequent contributor to the audio, book, and DWM subfora, and had been for some time. I'm disappointed to see them all go because Shaun Lyon's got better things to do. Why can't he just pull a Christian/T'Bonz and put someone else in charge? He basically already has anyway.

I hated some of the moderators there. I once made a stupid joke (and it was pretty stupid, I admit) about how people who constantly use the expression "SQUEEEEEE!" should be bundled into vans, sealed in concrete and dumped in the north sea.

I was set upon by four or five mods, demanding an apology for "inciting murder". When I commented on how ridiculous that was, and pointed out I was only taking the piss, I was told to "stop trying to defend the indefensible" and banned.

...seriously, what the hell? They seemed to genuinely believe I was actually threatening to harm their members.

A day later I got an email from one of the admins, who apologised and reinstated my account which was good of him, but it left a bad taste in my mouth about the vibe of the whole place. There's some ridiculous egos over there, no doubt about it.

I often roll my eyes about some of the mod actions on TrekBBS but compared to most forums I go to, it has to be said, this place is rather well run and has an altogether more pleasant calibre of people in it.

You're all a bunch of dipshits, but I love you. :p

I punched a guy who slagged me on a forum. I never got banned. I got a years free premium membership. Thats how forums should work.

It's very much the old story of little men letting a (very) tiny bit of power go to their heads.

Jim Steele: that does sound like an over reaction, and strange how they came down on you, when other people have said far worse.

Hopefully this is something that does not transfer from OG to GB

It's a shame OG is closing... we'll no longer be able to hold them up as an example of something worse when people accuse the TrekBBS staff of being irrational jackboots. :p

that is what is odd about this.

After reading OmahaStar's links, I think we have the answer right there. The guy's ego was so out of control he almost got sued. Given the other stories, I now see where it's a far more positive thing he's going away. Thanks for the truth, OmahaStar... :techman:

"Truth" is occasionally subjective, and in this case, far from unbiased, since OmahaStar admits he can't stand Shaun Lyon.

Might be. I just hope Shaun the liar Lyon goes away and we never hear from the liar again. Put another way, I can't stand the self-important fuckwad.

The "self-important fuckwad" is a friend of mine. He's not perfect, but he's never claimed to be, and I'm almost positive he's never anonymously called someone a "self-important fuckwad" on an internet bulletin board.

You'll note that I provided three links. I did not write what was on those pages. If you have a problem with that, take it up with Shaun.

Perhaps you don't know him as well as you'd like to believe.

I have never looked into OG and from what I've read about it in here I'm glad I never checked it out. Yikes.

I'm going to miss the place.

Okay you had your Rose worshippers/haters, your almost around the clock "RTD must go" threads. You had massive leaps of irrational judgement (my favourite is still the Tennant one), you had people who wanted the show to be super silly all the time, people who wanted it to be super serious all the time. It had people make comments about the cast and crew that made me wonder if they had mental health problems.

Then again, it's not something that I think only happens on OG.

It could also be a lively cheerful place.

And you're not biased either, I suppose?

Everything we need to know about Shaun Lyon can be summed up by his dealings (or lack of them until eventually legal action was mentioned) with Stuart Douglas and his over-the-top neo-Stalinist cleansing of any mention of Obverse books from the DWF.

I love how in his closing message Lyon manages to attack every other DW related forum (none of which feel the need to charge anyone to post there) and overstate once again his importance in the greater scheme of things. It was just a (very large) message board. The only effect they ever had on Doctor Who was making fans look bad every time someone involved with making the show made the mistake of reading it.

Hopefully, this is Mr. Lyon's final exit from running any kind of large message board again. He is too self-righteous, ignorant of others opinions and generally full of himself. You just have to look at the tone and attitude of superiority in his various announcements over the years.

Part of me wonders if he gets a weird thrill from messing about with people on message boards, as IIRC this is not the first time he has said the site would be shut down. The first time was a couple of years ago, when he firstly said the site would be shut down, then a month or so later he said he was "persuaded" to spin-off the forum into a dedicated operation separate from the rest of the site. Since when does someone with an ego and a large chip on the shoulder like Mr. Lyon be "persuaded" about anything.

I suppose the only sad thing is that various members of all things related to Doctor Who, like some of the new series writers, Big Finish and tie-in novel authors and the Doctor Who Magazine editors who post there may not move over to whatever takes its place (Steven Moffat posted there every so often until he was officially announced as the new showrunner).

What happened there? I'm sure I saw the books announced and advertised on OG...

OG is neither the paradise some folks would have you believe, nor the vile den of vipers that others here are portraying it as.

I've always found it a nice cool place to yak about books and movies most of the time, and an infuriating source of venom that drove me to quit for a couple of weeks at least once a year...

ETA- never mind, I saw the thing about the Obverse on Stuart's blog. Fucking hell, that's some nasty crap they've had - Shaun and Steve look like being their own worst enemies, really. I wonder if there's any connection between that and the sudden shutdown.
