Others should have elegant Arrowhead-like designs

The thing I don't like about the project patches is their cartoony and overly complicated look.

Starfleet uses a simple, instantly recognizable, arrowhead. I think mission patches should use similar designs as well.

Entities like The Federation Archeological Commission or The Federation Naval Patrol should too, and their names should be shortened as well. Starfleet isn't "The Federation Air and Space Armada," they're simply "Starfleet."

Also mission patches take on many different forms, and the names are fine the way they are. You wouldn't shorten them in any official capacity.

The Defiant logo, decal, picture, was a plaque made for the cast and crew. They made one every year, usually with everyone's name on it, and I believe this was from the final year(season 7) Apparently some of them sold theirs on Ebay. If I was involved in DS9 and received this plaque, I'd hang it in my office for the rest of my life.

It could be a mission patch. I'm not sure it was ever shown on screen.

Edit: It looks like a mission patch/logo for the Defiants design team and construction crew. A fitting analogy as it was given to all the behind the scenes crew on DS9.

The hero ship is flown by the heroes(the lead actors) but it takes many people and a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make it all possible.

Starfleet is what the show is all about, so of course its name is simple and to the point. Indeed, before they settled on Starfleet in TOS the other leading contender for the service's name was United Earth Space Probe Agency, or UESPA for short.

As for other names like Federation Naval Patrol or Archeological Commission, they were only mentioned in one episode each so there wasn't a need to give them a shortened name, and besides it was necessary to convey what kind of organization they were without any extra exposition.

That Defiant logo was a mission patch according to the DS9 Tech Manual, but no it never appeared on the show.

I think you're confusing a mission patch with the logo for an agency or organization.

That Defiant logo you shared is a mission patch or project patch. It's going to be more complicated than the Starfleet agency logo.

What is Starfleets logo? I've seen the UFP logo in various places. It's like the UN Logo I believe, but with a starry night background instead of an AE projection.

Project patches and mission patches are going to be complex / artistic. They are designed to capture the essence of a single, specific event; whereas an agency logo is a broad umbrella to cover all that they do, in which case "less is more" is often true.

I don't think so. Didn't this make it to Ross's office? Isn't this now Captain Kirk? Oh, sorry, I meant this. The lean is more toward contemporary design and outfits. Compare the simplicity of The Wormhole's original Starfleet/Defiant symbol to the busy pomp of the yellow flag. The mission patches you see are more reminiscent of contemporary designs. I think these things signal a stepping away from the futurism of the past.

We're in a postmodern period overall in contemporary culture - in architecture, music, and, yes, film. The contemporary impulse is not to create a different new future but to play with the past in new ways. Less this more this. There are pros as well as cons to that, but I'm underwhelmed by a lot of what is presented as 'future' these days.

Starfleet is what the show is all about, so of course its name is simple and to the point.

So why shouldn't other agencies names as well? If anything, the precedent and success of "Starfleet" should set the example.
