Orci & Kurtzman on plot holes

Most of those issues addressed in the interview I could care less about but seeing the writers having to explain stuff to that degree is ridiculous.

This isn't an issue of the fans being lazy and not thinking for themselves. It is just poor writing plain and simple. You shouldn't need to read interviews or watch podcasts to have things clarified. How many viewers are going to surf the net for that kind of information anyway? No, they will watch the film and be left scratching their heads. Moore had this problem as well with BSG at times most recently with the finale and all the post-finale Q&A/interviews he gave.

Listen up, writers learn to be more efficient in your writing and don't cram everything but the kitchen sink into a film or tv episode.

Kurtzman and Orci should really stop giving these interviews because the more I hear them talk and explain their reasoning the more my opinion of them as writers continues to sink. Bash B&B all you want they never came across this pathetic.

The explanations are pretty decent, I like them for the most part. The cut scenes for this movie should be interesting to see. Nero's ship can go through a black hole? impressive.

And by impressive you mean impossible. It would be forever descending into the black hole after passing the event horizon, from an outsider's persepctive, due to the extreme warping of time caused by the black hole. Of course, warp drive is totally implausible too, so I'll choose to buy their explanation! :techman:

Not necessarily true. If the singularity was a Kerr Ring (which, given the electrical discharges around it we can well assume it is), there are solutions that allow passage through it without being caught in the infinite spaghetti factory (see Cauchy region). It's actually one of the bits I was impressed with; when they said "a lightning storm in space" I was giggling with glee.

No, I disagree with you about the writers being lazy. Things get cut in the process of making a movie flow quickly. Important plot points got cut.

It doesn't make the movie less enjoyable for the general population, though. They aren't thinking this through like the fans are.

the Narada was built to travel through black holes? I didn't get that impression from Countdown. I thought it was just an accident.

Yes extraneous stuff gets edited out but not important scenes and you certainly don't leave in dialog that without those scenes are out of place and awkward. But, hey that's my way of thinking.

I'm not one of the critics who are enraged over the film but I don't see how you can say with a straight face that only fans would have a problem with this film because they actually think. I'm not even talking about the Trek elements and whether they hold up or not. I'm simply talking about the basic elements of any film even one as simple as an action piece. I don't know how any one with reasonable intelligence could not be aware of the problems just in the most fundamental ways. It is one thing to say that you are aware of them but you still can enjoy the film but it is another to suggest that you didn't notice them at all.

In fairness to the writers, they don't have much control over which scenes make it into the final cut of the movie.

Dude I thought they threaded a pretty tight needle.

1. Please (most of the) fans

2. Introduce Trek to a wide, blockbuster audience

3. Connect new Trek to previous continuity

4. Tell an origin story that ends up with the crew on the bridge ready to go for a sequel

5. Tell a compelling story that stands up on its own merits

6. Be a critical success

OK. Seriously. I think they're firing on most if not all cylinders here. To quote Pike, I dare you to do better.

I might not be able to do better but I'm not a professional writer but I'm certain there are other quality writers who could have fashioned a better film with all those elements.

Anything's possible. Anyhow, to quote the Rolling Stones: You can't always get what you want, but if you try some time, you might find, you get a pretty badass, enjoyable movie.

Please, don't confuse me with loons who irrationally bash this film. I enjoyed it to some extent but even action films in my opinion should have solid writing.

COMPLETELY AGREE.

They did an awesome job. I've been a Trek fan for 32 years and have watched and rewatched every series. I felt pandered to in this movie and I was absolutely thrilled. Tingles up the spine. With all the talk of "not your father's Star Trek" I went in with NO expectation that my devout Trek fandom would be treated so lovingly. I felt respected AND it was a great movie.

BRING ON XII, I can hardly stand the wait!!

Don't worry, man. I don't think anything like that. I think we just disagree about the writing in the film. I think they did a bang up job. You don't. It's cool

Not to mention the gravitational sheering forces from the extreme gravity would pull the quantum bonds of the ships' mollecules into long strands of energies in a process known as spaghettification.

Good stuff! Kirk really would have looked like a scumbag with the Orion if they scene had been kept in.

The klingons should have the figured out the technology over those 25 years.

That's silly. Use your imagination.

Nero went back in time 125 or so years, right?

How about we land a damaged 767 jet aircraft in Washington, DC on May 13th, 1884.

How long do you think it'll take the Americans of that era to get it running and learn how to fly it? Just a few years?

Joe, shaking head

After being rammed by the Kelvin, Nero’s ship was crippled; a convoy of Klingon Warbirds captured the crew and held them in a prison camp for all those years. Eventually the Romulans escaped, reclaimed their ship, blew up 47 Klingon vessels and returned to their mission
This still doesn't address how Nero got his ship back. The klingons should have the figured out the technology over those 25 years.

I guess. If the Wright Brothers captured an intact 747 without an owner's manual, how long would it take them to get it in the air?

Not to mention, the Narada wasn't exactly in mint condition. It had just suffered a collision from a starship. So they'd need to figure it out with it not working properly AND repair it.

I dont think 25 years to figure out and then repair a ship that can travel through black holes is totally out of the question.

Not necessarily; see my post, above.
