Orci: improvements to engine room?

I for one am excited they tweaked it even more, was bummed when they chose not to use it last time and relocated the scenes to the ship's brewery, although showing an entirely new area like that was intriguing as well.

I always liked the clean Trek design where everything is hidden behind smooth panels and still easy to access. It's like the difference between a Russian space station module and a Japanese space station module or a NASA module.

Actually from a true human spaceflight safety standpoint, you actually want to hide/protect as much of the hardware as possible. Even when you're designing a satellite, consideration it taken into the integration buildup and testing phases to minimize hazards to the technicians.

Though I didn't care for the brewery, I was more grumbling at the screen for all of the exposed pipes and valves. I was looking at it - One good jolt to the ship and you could easily be impaled by one of the doodads sticking out.

To me the engineering "set" just didn't match up with the design philosophy of the other Enterprise sets.

That was the same design philosophy that Matt Jefferies had for the original Enterprise's exerior. He had the idea that stuff would be concealed behind hatches in the hull (not only to protect them from space hazards but also to minimize the need for the crew to go outside the ship to repair and maintain them).

No idea why he posted this in the five word game thread (), but nonetheless this is relevant:

Source: On Location Vacations

The new Star Trek movie continues filming in L.A. this week, their locations will include the Budweiser Brewery, Sony Studios, Dodger Stadium, Long Beach City Hall, MCAS Tustin and the Vasquez Rocks. (per @goforlocation)

Interesting.
Will engineering room be the same?

Brewery engine room FTW!:techman:

Vasquez rocks is interesting. Flashback to Vulcan, perhaps? Or the new Vulcan colony?

And Dodger Stadium? Maybe a huge celebration ceremony at the end, a la ENT's "Home"?

Remember that parts of the Giant Space Drill space jump and fight scene and the "Kirk running from monsters on Delta Vega" sequence from the last movie were shot on location in a parking lot adjacent to Dodger Stadium. I'd guess that the next movie also has a scene calling for sets, scenery or rigs too large to be easily fit into a soundstage.

I think someone messed up...its exactly the same locations as last time. Vasquez Rocks are there and yet there is no Vulcan anymore... the same hangar again? and lets not get started on Budweiser!!

I agree. I think they just accidentally re listed the locations used last time around.

No, TPTB have decided that the new target audience doesn't care about continuity, so there will be scenes on Vulcan.

I didn't mind the ship board brewery, still hated it, but I could look past it in the grand scheme of things within the movie.

Glad that a possible change is happening. Even if it is a subtle facelift.

On the plus side, maybe they will film in a chocolate factory, nothing will be as cool as a chocolate waterfall in place of a warp core.

I like the preliminary designs they had for Engineering during pre-production for ST XI.

Ditto that! This is what Engineering should look like:

It's like a modern version of the TMP Engineering Deck, which I really liked. With any luck, we might get something closer to this in the new movie.

:techman:

Now this would have been a lot better, and not a brewery, a factory, or a stripped down shopping mall. Add a nice, tall vertical chamber, as well as some alien looking stuff as well, and we have a winner. :techman:

Trek's done it before: Look at the Enterprise bridge at the end of STIV. Then, as we pick up shortly afterwards in V, it's totally different. It changes again (slightly) for STVI. Engineering in V and VI are totally different, too...

Agree.

Using a brewery for a set is not the end of the world. It's honestly not even something worth constantly bitching about for years on a Trek BBS. Why people feel such a need to do so is beyond me.
