Opening Scene of Trek XI

I've taken some shots at Star Trek 2009, it was enjoyable but not my favorite Trek movie. (I'm sure that will receive backlash)

But I want to give proper credit. The opening scene with the Kelvin and George Kirk is my favorite scene in all of Star Trek tv/movies. They nailed it. I hope they are able to reproduce something as memorable going forward.

Most importantly I think that scene verifies that Captain Robau is indeed a badass.

Well there is no doubt that it gets your attention. As a matter of fact,I found that it got me right into the movie. Best opening? Agreed. Followed by Gen and FC.

I agree, it was a good opening and, really, the only way to open the movie. Trying to imagine the opening scene being Spock's birth (as originally intended) and then getting to the destruction of the Kelvin later just seems, well, illogical. As anyone who has ever had a course or read a book on creative writing can tell you, one of the first lessons is that you begin a story in the middle of action so that your audience is sucked in.

By the time the movie got to the words STAR TREK unfolding across the screen I was in complete shock at how freaking good it was.

That's what was going though my head. So yeah, incredible opening and the rest of it was also incredible!

I agree. It is my favorite opening as well and for me it is the most emotional opening to a trek movie. Really tear jerking. Probably the best part of the movie, too.

I agree wholeheratedly with this assessment.
He passed the Kobayashi Maru, no cheating required. :mallory:

The opening sequence was proof that we have capable writers on our hands. It's ironic, the same people who wrote the dog humping scene from Transformers could also write the most emotionally charged opening 10 minutes of any Star Trek, ever. I don't know how they will ever top that.

Two dogs humping.

Keenser.

At the same time.

There's your opening to Star Trek XII.

By 2009 standards, probably best opening. But out of all Trek? All the other films have equal if not better openings...esp TWOK. Now that's an opening act...

I don't know. I love Khan, but I would argue that the new movie had a more effective opening. Certainly a more emotional one.

I was absolutely blown away by those first 15 minutes. The only tiny critique I had was that final wide shot with the crippled Narada and the fleeing shuttles should have been held just a tiny bit longer, and then fade to black, and then start the surging title music. Just let that whole experience settle in for a second, heheheh. Other than that, it was pitch perfect for me.

the opening was outstanding. Kirk and family, the Kelvin's fate, the visual and sound effects... everything was and is still top notch. This is the first time in Star Trek I can actually say that I had a firm grip on my seat. even a tear went out of my eye. The whole scene has intensity. something that was missing from the last movies...

and when the words STAR TREK appeared on the big screen, I looked at my wife and we shared that "look" Is this really Star Trek ?

that was a good moment. I truly hope they do it again in the next one !

Yeah, ditto. TWOK's opening is solid, but it's certainly not the best thing ever.

My favorite part was the destruction of Vulcan. Not that I wanted that, but man what intensity!

Maybe it's because I've always been more Spock focused than Kirk focused.

I think I was a little unclear.

Not just the best "opening" ever... but the best scene of all of Star Trek from ToS,TNG,DS9,VOY,ENT and the movies.

It was kinda good until the "Autopilot malfunction" ruined it. It was bad in Nemesis, it was bad here.
