Opening Scene of Trek XI

Not just the best "opening" ever... but the best scene of all of Star Trek from ToS,TNG,DS9,VOY,ENT and the movies.

There are many, many better scenes throughout all of the series.
Episode, act & scene numbers please.

We'll start off with Kirk holding back McCoy while Edith Keeler is struck by a truck in The City on the Edge of Forever.

The 'risk is our business' speech from Return to Tomorrow.

Amok Time as a whole.

"What's you prognosis, Doctor?" from Where No Man Has Gone Before.

"In another reality, I could have called you friend." from Balance of Terror.

The "go to him" scene between Spock and Amanda from Journey to Babel.

Need I go on?

By 2009 standards, probably best opening. But out of all Trek? All the other films have equal if not better openings...esp TWOK. Now that's an opening act...

You seriously telling me that you think that the laughing vulcan from Trek 5 was better than the opening of Trek XI?

Of course he would think that. Some people are never going to let go of the fact that ST09 was successful and people enjoyed it. It's their prerogative, but one isn't entitled to their own facts.

And it's not just trek 5 that is worse. I think that trek XI does indeed have one of the best openings.

Let's recap...

Trek XI: Opens with a captain sacrificing himself to save his crew, and then a bridge officer giving his life so that the rest of the crew can escape. And just as he dies, he hears the cries of a son that he will never know, never see.

Compare this to...

TMP: Big blue cloud eats some Klingons.
TWOK: Enterprise goes to rescue a ship, is attacked and destroyed by Klingons, but oh, it's just a trick! it wasn't real!
TSFS: Crewman asking if there's going to be a party and kirk saying how bad he feels.
TVH: Big cylinder drains power, then cut to vulcan where the mechanics are wearing smurf hats.
TFF: What was that song the girl mentioned in TNG? The laughing Vulcan and his dog?
TUC: This one is pretty good. The event which is going to lead to stability throughout the Federation and surrounding area. But it doesn't come close to Trek XI.
Generations: This was also good. The death of kirk!
First Contact: Good in that it showed Picard's nightmares about the Borg, and it shopwed how horrible the Borg were. Loses some points for the "It was only a dream" thing, but not many, coz it was kinda obvious.
Insurrection: beautiful music, but I hate how Data actually SAYS everything he is doing. Why is that neccessary?
Nemesis: Not too bad, sets up the political intrigue of Shinzon taking power. Too bad the movie doesn't deliver on it. But still, it's not anything above and beyond what other movies have done with the genre.

Trek XI has one of the best openings in any Trek movie I have seen.

But they weren't a dream, they were visitations. He had them because the Borg were still in his head and now they were close.

Oh I loved that opening when they all turned to stone and crumbled.. I remember thinking, whoa this is going to be good. And that was the best scene in the whole movie :(

Well for the opening scene for Star Trek XI was fantastic showing up with interesting single nacelle designed starfleet designed scout class vessel. Another thing that caught my eye was the registry number beginning with a 0! I'm now waiting patiently for Star Trek XII and to see where the Enterprise is off to with its wild young 25 year old Captain and loyal crew! Maybe see more Constitution class heavy cruisers like in the primary universe!

And the son is James T Kirk which adds even more to the emotional factor. I agree the opening scene in Trek XI is the best. The combination of action and emotion is big. I always cry when Kirk's parents are talking about names for their son. George's sacrifice is one of the best in all of Trek. Period. And when the words "Star Trek" flash across the scene, my thought was "This is definitely not old Star Trek anymore".

Stop it. I'm getting all misty eyed thinking about it. It's not often that a film has me that emotionally invested in new characters in the 1st 10-15 mins, that I'm already "in the moment" with the characters.

Agreed, the best opening of any ST movie and best opening of any movie in 2009.
