Not just the best "opening" ever... but the best scene of all of Star Trek from ToS,TNG,DS9,VOY,ENT and the movies.
There are many, many better scenes throughout all of the series.

By 2009 standards, probably best opening. But out of all Trek? All the other films have equal if not better openings...esp TWOK. Now that's an opening act...
Of course he would think that. Some people are never going to let go of the fact that ST09 was successful and people enjoyed it. It's their prerogative, but one isn't entitled to their own facts.By 2009 standards, probably best opening. But out of all Trek? All the other films have equal if not better openings...esp TWOK. You seriously telling me that you think that the laughing vulcan from Trek 5 was better than the opening of Trek XI?
First Contact: Good in that it showed Picard's nightmares about the Borg, and it shopwed how horrible the Borg were. Loses some points for the "It was only a dream" thing, but not many, coz it was kinda obvious.
Oh I loved that opening when they all turned to stone and crumbled.. I remember thinking, whoa this is going to be good. And that was the best scene in the whole movieNemesis: Not too bad, sets up the political intrigue of Shinzon taking power. Too bad the movie doesn't deliver on it. But still, it's not anything above and beyond what other movies have done with the genre.
Trek XI: Opens with a captain sacrificing himself to save his crew, and then a bridge officer giving his life so that the rest of the crew can escape. And just as he dies, he hears the cries of a son that he will never know, never see.
Stop it. I'm getting all misty eyed thinking about it. It's not often that a film has me that emotionally invested in new characters in the 1st 10-15 mins, that I'm already "in the moment" with the characters.Trek XI: Opens with a captain sacrificing himself to save his crew, and then a bridge officer giving his life so that the rest of the crew can escape. And just as he dies, he hears the cries of a son that he will never know, never see.
And the son is James T Kirk which adds even more to the emotional factor. I agree the opening scene in Trek XI is the best. The combination of action and emotion is big. I always cry when Kirk's parents are talking about names for their son. George's sacrifice is one of the best in all of Trek. Period. And when the words "Star Trek" flash across the scene, my thought was "This is definitely not old Star Trek anymore".
They have my permission to try.Anyone think they are going to top it in the next movie?
Ohhhhh, they are so going to top it in the next movie. It's going to leave us saying, "No Shit!"Anyone think they are going to top it in the next movie?
