Ontario Provincial Politics

not sure that today's throne speech was exactly kosher.

it strikes me more as using the parliament for the promoting the liberal's election platform.

In other words, it's exactly what they've done before. I had a feeling that's what would happen. Wynne really likes promoting herself, especially with an election around the corner.

And while the government is being asked hard questions (and rightly so) about how it's going to fund things like the it's new childcare program where are the questions about how ford is going to fund the tory commitments?

And with the childcare plan, they need to set a fixed rate - childcare centres are good at pricing gouging and raising their prices when ever the govt gives extra money to parents for childcare.

He's claiming that they'll be able to trim $6bil but the question is from where?

Wynne and her government have been in power for too long and have gotten complacent. I think a little change would be good. Although I'm not sure if Ford will be the one to do it.

I don't think Ford is the best one to do it, but all the polls so far seem to show that @Garak 's not wrong. I'm not happy about it, but any other outcome seems to be a long shot at this point.

I wonder what it would take for him to do or say to actually cause them to lose, if anything?

I doubt it - hence my early comments that he's pretty much going to get elected because he's not wynne and the liberals even if caught selling dope at Queen's Park.

Now this is interesting. Most recent poll shows the gap closing between the PCs and the Liberals, so much so that if an election were held today, the PCs would still win, but only with a minority government. If we have to have a Doug Ford government, I'd feel a little better with a minority one, rather than a majority.

Also shows the sometimes conflicting nature of the electorate... the recent budget is rather unpopular... but the major initiatives in the budget are exceedingly popular!

As the article points out, the election is still a couple months away, so things could continue to go back-and-forth.

Also, here's another recent opinion piece.

Doug Ford is, to use a charitable word, a puzzle

Yeah, I know. All we can hope is for the best. I just hope he doesn't become our own mini-Trump. Funny, but I remember having a similar conversation around the time of the last election, I think when Wynne was campaigning for her second term. When you think about it, all outcomes seem to be long shots.

Not to interrupt, but....

As an American, I find this just Fascinating!
You guys are as screwed up as we are....! Thank you Mucho Grande!

Clive Cussler has a book about a "Ghost Train".... Long Live the United States of Canada...

Now, back to the scheduled Program...

 :)

Kind of wish Wynne would veer right into a pothole, and see how bad they are...

Horwath is kind of interesting. When she was running last time, she was quite new to everyone and really didn't stand a chance among the recognition of the others. But it can be different for her this time around. Maybe she'll actually stand a chance.

Well, let's not be hasty... we're not quite that bad. ;)

Yet. Give us two months, then check in again!

Indeed. The Canadian trust-fund baby that places personal ideals over realities while alienating whole swaths of the country as he sucks up to a specific set of billionaires is *completely* different.

...all politicians look alike to me....sorry `bout that.

Pot holes are largely a municipal matter since the province dumped downloaded a lot of the provincial highways onto local govt in the harris era so that's probably one thing we can't really blame wynne for.

Well I don't think we've encountered a wave of unabashed populism yet - but it appears as though we are about to see one such test in Ontario. It should serve as an interesting sampling of the national political climate... Liberals have been winning hand over fist in by-elections, etc. since Trudeau was elected in 2015 but perhaps it's all coming to an end.

For example: Nova Scotia's provincial election in May 2017 was a tremendous upset - the polls showed the PCs were going to topple the (much maligned) Liberal minority and they ended up electing a Liberal majority. The voices of the anti-Liberal crowd before the vote was deafening. I still can't explain or even understand what happened... but there always appears to be a disconnect between polls and what people actually do when they are in the voting booth.

The loudest group of people isn't always victorious.
