Only Earth names for starships?

^ Could be. Culluh did even seem to care for Seska, after a fashion; perhaps he helped keep her memory alive. Although I doubt his typical male Kazon ego would allow him to name a ship after her. The son might, though.

it's not just human-centric, it's also anglo-american centric

i agree it's anglo-centric...i mean, maybe add up all the tiny onscreenlistings, maybe not as much. But when you HEAR the names, especially in TNG,they seemed so white (just like the music...only Euro-Classical, never Asian or African) .

One of the things i liked about Andromeda was the creativity of the names.

Andromeda Ascendant is a great name.

DS9 had a runabout named Rio Grande, but not a runabout named Rio Bravo.

Some of the names of old Japanese naval ships translated into English were The Invincibility of Buddhism, Land of Divine Mulberry Trees and Dragon Flying in Heaven. Pretty nice names for starships?

:)

you're getting into Halo franchise territory there, UNSC Pillar of Autumn...

i totally went 'what the f...?' when i saw it in the game.

The Rio Bravo is a Duke class runabout. It's sister ships are the El Dorado and the Rio Lobo. ;)

Don't have to go to different worlds to have spellings mean different things. Just look at English and American English.

I.e the word meter, in English it means a measuring device, with the spelling metre meaning a unit of measurment. In American English the former means both, whilst that later would not be used.

Also, we wouldn't say "whilst" for fear of getting beat up. :)

One good example of that is USS Crazy Horse, which properly should have been USS Thasunke Witko, in the original Sioux language.

:)

I'd love to hear the Captain of the Crazy Horse explain his ship's name to first-contacted alien diplomat. Especially if they're a very literal people.

Sorry for 3 in a row, but, yes, I love Japanese ship (and aircraft) names. Very poetic. One of my kitbashes is after the carrier Soryu - "Blue-green Dragon."

I agree that, especially in TNG, Federation ship names were too Euro/Anglo-American-centric. But TNG does deserve credit for a very prominent counter-example: The U.S.S. Yamato. This is particularly notable, as she was named for the battleship Yamato, flagship of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. So I think the TNG writers deserve some credit for naming another Big Important Ship after a ship of a nation theirs had been at war with, if we're grading them on levels of Euro/Anglo-American-centrism.

^Let's also not forget the USS Akagi, USS Biko, USS Cario, USS Chekov, USS Ghandi, USS Ganges, USS Honshu, USS Jenolan, USS Kobayashi Maru, USS Kongo, USS Korolev, USS Kyushu, USS Mekong, USS Musashi, USS Okinawa, USS Raman, USS Sarajevo, USS Shiku Maru, USS Suleiman, USS Tian An Men, USS Tolstoy, USS Tsiolkovsky, USS Volga, USS Whorfin, USS Yamaguchi, USS Yangtzee Kiang, USS Zapata, and USS Zhukov.

Yes, the vast majority of ships named in Star Trek have a decidedly western-europian/anglo flavor to them, but I believe that's a product of where the show is produced and who the target audience was in the beginning. I'd like to think there are a number rich starship histories for the USS Sarek, the USS Gorkon, or even the USS Kumari. There are likely loads of ships that we never hear about that pay homage to the histories of species we've never heard of in the Federation and probably dozens of Federation Starships named for respected former enemies... I wouldn't be shocked to see a USS Kor/Koloth/Kang in some future canon iteration of Trek.

After reading this post I'm picturing Teal'c from SG-1 saying "the ship's name translates as 'Undomesticated Equine."

Wouldn't that be just as unintelligible to an alien as "Crazy Horse"?

Perhaps in the interest of multiculturalism, there can be both a USS Pernickety, and a USS Persnickety.

:)

It's not the intelligibility that worries me, it's the perception of naming a ship after an insane half-ton animal. Then you'd have to explain that it's not named after an animal, but after a great warrior who was named after the animal. Then the aliens would ask (a) why you were first-contacting them in a ship named after a great warrior if you claim to be a peaceful people, and (b) why the great warrior was named after an insane half-ton animal. Then if you're stupid enough to explain that there's a certain amount of guilt in the naming of the ship because great warrior was a leader of a culture that was almost wiped out by genocide... well, you may as well pack up and leave, 'cause those aliens ain't gonna wanna know us. May as well name the ship "USS We Used to Kill Each Other Gleefully." Same probably goes for any other ship named after a military leader or battle - Nimitz, Lexington, Yorktown...

First contacts should only be carried out by the USS Please Be Our Friends.

Not to mention, what if you even have to explain what a horse is, and the aliens turn out to be horrified that mankind treats the other species on our planet as slaves. God forbid you mention we EAT them too!

Okay, my brain needs a bitchslap.

And then it turns out that the species you made first contact with has a martial culture that does not respect as equals anyone who tries to be overly friendly or sycophantic, and instead views such cultures as cowardly and duplicitious, and therefore unworthy of trust or respect. In fact, once they hear such a sycophantic name, they just decide to open fire right away 'cos they think you're probably just doing it as a ploy to get them in a vulnerable position and slip a knife in their backs. ;)
