I was at that new books store a few days ago, and I actually found 2 SW books (a novel and an electronic trivia book), and one ST book (Treason). The SW trivia book was on the top shelf, along with other large books. The SW novel and Treason were arranged alphabetically by author, so it would be difficult to tell if there were any more ST or SW books.
Yesterday, when I was there, they had those same three books, lined out flat, on a shelf all to themselves. More than half the shelf was empty. (Most of the other SF shelves were basically front cover, spine, front cover, spine, etc.)
I suppose one shelve is all you need if it's got what you want.

Wow, lucky you. I was just at the local Borders earlier this week, and while I didn't find anymore novels, I did find one copy of the Countdown trade. I was actually hoping to find one of the other IDW trades, but that was all they had and I have been wanting to read it, so I went ahead and got it. I haven't gotten a chance to read it yet though.
The only difference at my Borders is that they've moved the Trek stuff over two aisles. At first, I thought they had gotten rid of it entirely. The only Trek comic they had was a few copies of Countdown, but I just ordered that off Amazon because it was cheaper. They have a whole Manga section, but I couldn't find any of the Trek ones.
I was in a Borders in Lawrence KS (a university town) today. There was half a shelf of Star Trek books--mainly because there was a special location for the new Star Trek movie novelization. But, even so, there were about eleven copies of novels (three of the novelization) in total.

Hey! I was just in Greenfield, and swooped up all the TOS novels that I didn't have, at the used book store. Made the guy's day, I think. Great place. They had the old Doctor Who books at one point, but seem to have been taken.
My Borders still doesn't have the new movie novelisation...
Mine has one or two copies (along with the other summer movie novelizations) near the front. Strangely, there weren't any with the other Trek novels.
I've only seen the movie adaptation in K-Mart and Big W (though I haven't been to Borders). It's certainly not at my local Collins or Angus & Robertson - the only Trek book between them is a hardcover of Death in Winter which has been sitting there for at least two years.
The tie-in isn't in my local Borders, but it has a shelf of mostly TNG-era novels and the anthologies. The Borders that's about 15 miles away has a more robust Trek section, with the tie-in and manga as well. They also have a healthy collection of Doctor Who, unlike the local (Hadley, MA) Borders.
My Borders used to have a pretty good Doctor Who section (about two shelves), but now it's down to one shelf with just multiple copies of about three different novels.

You might want to look in the front (I'm not saying that to be mean or anything). My local Borders doesn't have any Trek novels anywhere near the movie Novelization.

The last time I was in there, they didn't have any copies at all, even near the front (I checked, suspecting exactly this sort of logic-challenged planning from Borders). Might be worth looking again, though.
Galaxy in Sydney notified me a few weeks ago the book was in, and I had one put aside. I needed a second copy, so I raced in, headed to the back ST shelves (always generously stocked with an eclectic backstock, but quickly being picked clean of rarities since the movie's premiere) - and there were no copies of the new novelization on display.
Sold out? No, the books were all stacked in two quivering black towers at the front entrance. The staff knew that not-yet-fans would notice it coming in. Funnily enough, the ST diehards all stride straight past the display and home in on the familiar ST shrine! (Like I had done.)
However, the strategy has worked. Galaxy only had about six copies left last night, but I still wondered why they didn't put any on the regular ST shelves!
My local Dymocks today: 30 shelves of science fiction across two freestanding units. Two half shelves of ST stuff, including five copies of the new novelization! "Star Wars" is down to a mere half shelf, next to the latest ST stuff!
I stumbled across five copies of Open Secrets today at a local grocery store notorious for not stocking much in the way of *any* SF, much less Trek. Color me gobsmacked.
