Once Upon A Time Season 5 Discussion Thread -Spoilers

Two episodes. Sweet!

The first one, "Birth" certainly answered a lot of questions - what Emma wanted with Excalibur, what happened to Merlin - and everything else - back in Camelot. Emma is not evil per se; all she wanted was to save Hook's life, but that unfortunately came with a price, and now he too has the Darkness. Was Emma going too far by wanting to use Zelena as a vessel for the Darkness? I thought it was vicious, but she only wanted to ultimately vanquish the Darkness within her and Killian.

ETA: So Ruby left Storybrooke "two years ago" to return to the Enchanted Forest. According to the second episode, that was toward the end of the Wicked Witch arc, Season 3.2, back in early in 2014, which is roughly two years ago. That's about right.

All that jumping around in time got confusing at times, but it was a good episode. Merida first met Mulan two years ago and encountered her again while searching for the enchanted helm, but Ruby came into the picture just six weeks ago, after Merida returned to Donbrach. It appeared the witch only wanted to test Merida's character and fitness to rule by threatening to collect on an old debt. That only seemed fair, considering King Fergus never used the helm in battle. But one thing is certain: it was Arthur who killed Fergus.

It appears a lot of people want Arthur dead.

Have we had any episodes that just focused on guest stars like this before? Other than Snow in the flashback the only main cast regular who appeared in new footage was Rebecca Mader as Zelena.

Just two more episodes remain until the show takes a break for a few months. This half of the season has gone by so fast. I really liked both episodes last night especially the first hour. Both episodes are getting a lot of hate I social media.

Regina's question about Whale's hair dye job was pretty funny...a reference to iZombie I suppose.

Yeah, I was looking at stuff for the second episode on the OUaT Wiki and almost all of the comments were complaining about it. I can understand people who don't like the characters it focused on as much as I do not liking it. I will admit it was a little odd to get an episode that strayed some off of the main arc of the season after getting such a big one. I tend to like stories that give so even if I didn't love the three girls this one focused on, I probably still would have enjoyed it.
and Snow in the new "goodbye" scene in the back of Granny's
I said Snow in my post.

Best line in the 1st ep?

Regina: What's with the dye job?
Wale: "Oh, so Emma changes her hair and no one makes a fuss and I get ridiculed?"

Best line in the 2nd ep...

Ruby: "You know, I may not be the best person to ask for dating advice, I kind of ate the only boyfriend I ever had..."
Mulan: Yes, I think that disqualifies you."

When Zelena was brought in, Dr. Whale said something along the lines of, "When you first came here, you were trying to take a baby. Why would you do that when trying to make a baby is so much more fun?"

I liked how Whale complained to Zelena "the last time you were here, you threw me across the room..." and the first thing Emma did when she arrived was to throw Whale across the room!

I'm surprised to hear that these episodes were not well received. I loved both of them. Although social media seems to favor haters.

That was quite a revelation in the first episode. I didn't see anything like that coming at all, and I can't wait to see where it goes. I wonder if Merlin is really dead or just incapacitated-- we didn't actually get a corpus delicti.

As for the second episode, I could watch Merida for an hour all by herself-- throw in Mulan and Ruby and it made for quite a riveting hour of television. :rommie: They should have their own spinoff, handing special op cases for David. They could call themselves Charming's Angels. :rommie:

Aside from overloading my optic nerves, this was a really nice story of Merida losing and then regaining confidence in her dad-- and finally learning to have confidence in herself and earning the confidence of the clans. I loved it when the archers showed up to support her. And I was so glad that the king did not use the enchanted helm. I was afraid that they were going to corrupt the character and disillusion Merida, so that was a relief. And it turns out that the killer was Arthur, so now Merida has a stake in the overall arc.

But where was the romance that we were promised?

And if the witch was actually a good witch, why did she enslave Ruby?

I think part of the problem (for some people anyway) is that they dropped a rather large bomb at the end of the first episode, and then moved away from the story in the second.
It probably doesn't help that it's not on next week either.

For the social media I've visited after the first episode, there's a lot of angst going on but these particular people enjoyed the episode.

For me, I enjoyed both parts and it was good to see Red (and Mulan) back. Merida is always good to watch too.

Still kinda hoping Red and Mulan come back full time at some point though:(

(I'd like Archie back too but I think the actor is still doing Murder in the first)

My bad.
