Two episodes. Sweet!
The first one, "Birth" certainly answered a lot of questions - what Emma wanted with Excalibur, what happened to Merlin - and everything else - back in Camelot. Emma is not evil per se; all she wanted was to save Hook's life, but that unfortunately came with a price, and now he too has the Darkness. Was Emma going too far by wanting to use Zelena as a vessel for the Darkness? I thought it was vicious, but she only wanted to ultimately vanquish the Darkness within her and Killian.
ETA: So Ruby left Storybrooke "two years ago" to return to the Enchanted Forest. According to the second episode, that was toward the end of the Wicked Witch arc, Season 3.2, back in early in 2014, which is roughly two years ago. That's about right.
All that jumping around in time got confusing at times, but it was a good episode. Merida first met Mulan two years ago and encountered her again while searching for the enchanted helm, but Ruby came into the picture just six weeks ago, after Merida returned to Donbrach. It appeared the witch only wanted to test Merida's character and fitness to rule by threatening to collect on an old debt. That only seemed fair, considering King Fergus never used the helm in battle. But one thing is certain: it was Arthur who killed Fergus.
It appears a lot of people want Arthur dead.
