On season 4 of Buffy...should I be watching Angel?

I sure hope the OP isn't still reading this thread. At the rate people are obnoxiously posting spoilers he'll have the entire series ruined for him within a page or two.

Buffy was not raped. She managed to kick Spike off her body before he could go any further.

I seem to remember that that scene was written much differently but the director of the episode misinterpreted what was intended. Does anyone else remember that?

IIRC, Marti Noxon wrote the scene based on an experience she had with an ex-boyfriend, wherin SHE tried to force herself on HIM and was rejected. She said it wasn't anywhere near as rapey as the scene as filmed, and she didn't intend it to BE as rapey as filmed, but the director and the actors interpreted it thus. At least that's how I recall the interview (or commentary?) at the time.

The only spoilers I've caught from this thread so far is vague stuff about which characters are around later.

Am I supposed to recognize the name Darla? Is she a former slayer? That's the only thing that would make sense in context.

Darla is the school girl vampire from Buffy's pilot episode. I'm not sure how far along you are in the story (or what has been revealed so far), but she is a very important part of Angel's life.

Ahh, that's interesting. I just watched the season 1 finale of Angel, where all they do is say "Things will be clear soon, Darla" and then go out, like I'm supposed to remember who Darla is. She was a memorable character who clearly had history with Angel but they didn't focus on her name much, and at the time she didn't really seem that threatening other than the Master was fond of her. I guess it's threatening that she's the only vampire who ever thought to use a gun.

That's an odd person for Wolfram & Hart to go to such lengths to revive.

Darla is kind of a weird character. She appeared in the pilot of Buffy and seemed like kind of a minor one off character, but she ended up becoming a HUGE part of the Buffyverse mythology and backstory.

Ok, so the third character in the Netflix icon for Buffy finally appears, and it's a sister of Buffy's who has never been mentioned before. That's kind of odd.

Buffy's father only appeared once in a context where he was being controlled by magic to say what Buffy was afraid of that she was the cause of the divorce for being too weird, and it's weird enough that this was never cleared up in a further meeting. Now they pull a sister out of nowhere who doesn't look much older than Buffy.

It's interesting how Wesley is being made into a Strength 6 Dexterity 18 kind of fighter.

Also interesting that the leader of the street gang is now appearing in the main credits. I guess that takes care of the 'Physical strength' deficit.

I seem to remember reading once that Benz was SMG's runner up and Darla was their way of throwing a bone. I don't know if it's true or not.

Interesting, though, in that one could argue, these days, Benz is the bigger star.

Ok, where was Dawn supposed to have been the first four seasons? Did she live with their father or is she supposed to have actually been there in the house all that time and just not on camera? There are so many episodes where that just wouldn't work.

You do need to watch S5 to find out about Dawn. I love Dawn on BtVS though! :D

I must say, you are the first person I've come across that actually likes Dawn. Without being spoiler-y, could you tell me why you like her? I'm curious.
