OMG! New preview! And it's great!

^ Yet another post with 100% personal insults and zero substance... I think I've learned my lesson. Wish you all the best with your career, Mike.

I think people forget just how little TOS established about its own time period. In the TNG era we know about all the major events affecting the Federation, Klingons and Romulans. Not that it isn't an interesting setting but it gives less story freedom. When I see people say Discovery's setting is limiting it makes me wonder what in particular they're referring to. Other than the fact that Talos is off limits, what do we really know about this setting?

The limits are only in making the show feel like canon. If that isn't a concern then you basically have freedom in any time period. If you want it to sort of feel consistent then the advantage you have here is you got humans exploring space when it was still kind of like a Wild Frontier and less evolved humans. I also think it's easier to get a sense of wonder from this time period because monsters and weird aliens seem to fit better than they would in the future were aliens tend to more represent different cultures or countries and space is basically a version of Earth.

These statements are only "not true" according to your 5 minutes of google research, not according to my colleagues, stackoverflow, and years of practical experience. But whatever, you do you, Mr. iPhone developer who thinks iPhones are more powerful than communicators and tricorders.

I think this sub-thread should make sense to anyone who was actually following along instead of looking for opportunities to insult and nitpick. In my experience, semantics is the refuge of people who love to argue but have nothing to argue.

Your colleagues and stackoverflow? I've been a dev for over 30 years. You crap on people for quoting Google and now you yourself say that you're quoting....STACKOVERFLOW?

How much ACTUAL experience do you have? Zero.

Can you guys let your IT rage flow somewhere else please and stop getting personal?

And when I say "please", keep in mind mod cat has sharp claws.

^ I think Mike already has a couple scratches.

No rage here though. I've been done with that for hours now.

The limits are only in making the show feel like canon.

But is it relatively more limiting than post TNG? How so?

I'm going to rephrase that.
Fallout 4 was fun, infact I've probably gone through it as much as I've gone through F:NV, but the story was bad.

I was planning on watching a select group of Trek episodes this weekend. But changed my mind and decided to watch the Abrams films instead. Because the style and storytelling is going to much more closely match those as opposed to TOS.

BTW: call phones can now talk to things in orbit....

https://www.space.com/38231-nanosatellite-smartphone-first-voice-call.html

For the first time, a voice call has been made via a nanosatellite using a regular smartphone.

The voice call lasted more than a minute and went off without a hitch, said Meir Moalem, CEO of the United Kingdom-based startup Sky and Space Global.

...
"It was the world's first-ever intersatellite communication demonstration with nanosatellite," said Moalem. "We made it up to ranges of up to 2,000 km [1,240 miles], moving data from one satellite to another."
...

By the end of this year, the company hopes to demonstrate streaming of data from an airplane's black box via the 3 Diamonds, according to Moalem. The full constellation is expected to be operational by 2020. Before that, the 3 Diamonds could be used for machine-to-machine communication and internet-of-things applications, Moalem said.

^^ Which is exactly how I described Trek-style devices working. You talk to the ship.

Sky and Space Global uses low-cost satellite terminals that can be installed in homes and are similar to Wi-Fi routers. The terminals would enable the occupants to make phone calls...
..."We made it up to ranges of up to 2,000 km [1,240 miles], moving data from one satellite to another."

^^ Which is exactly how I described the difference between smartphones and Trek-style devices. They aren't self contained. :p

That aside, this is actually pretty awesome news.
