Old-School Sound Effects in Trek XI?

I couldn't possibly care less about the sound effects being 'old school' and I don't worry about whether sound effects are 'canon'.

I think the sound effect should fit with what's on the screen - regardless of 'canon'.

You're right, but if there was a way to include the old sound effects (or modern facsimiles of them) in a manner that doesn't seem cheesey, then I say 'why not?'

I think the boatswain's whistle could easily be used for the ship's intercom. The one in TOS was "electronic sounding" enough to fit a 2009 film.

Yes.

I hope they have the sound of the Enterprise's engines revving up as they go into warp - I always thought that was one of the cooler sound effects from TOS.

:) ...and that sound when the engines suddenly go offline while at warp - like shifting into too low a gear for your current speed.

I'm delighted that they've used the old transporter sound effects at least for the trailers.

TOS had lame, cheesey music. I hope they don't use it in teh new movie. That would just suck.

Cheesey music and cardboard sets and dumb fights. That was TOS.

Hey, they used plastic and wood too.

Anyway, nothing wrong with some good cheese.

Cute. Real cute.

You know...there's so much wrong with that statement, I don't even know where to begin.

You're right, he should've said "Cheesey music and cardboard sets and dumb fights. That was part of TOS.

I'm down with cheesy music in XI, so long as it doesn't involve Jerry Bruckheimer-esque guitars with heavy drums drowning out a full orchestra.

Well, my problem is that I don't think the music was cheesy. The sets had problems with them even multimillion dollar films have (wobbles and such). As for the fights....what'd you expect....Matrix or something?

Then again, it's part of my training to accept things on their terms, not mine (historian).

To me, the fights did seem cheesy (see: Kirk roll), especially compared to a show like Mission: Impossible, which ran at the same time. Perhaps there's some sort of sci-fi on-switch that activates in a fight choreographer's head; they would all do fine and realistic on any other show, but the instant you step into a set like Star Trek, BAM: the cheese hits!

I wish it to have the same original sound efx but it can be re-done in a new way that will make it sound 'current' with modern audio plugs/samples, etc.

I've always liked the original phaser and transporter sounds better than the modern versions. I especially enjoyed the transporter effect from the teaser trailer. So I say keep them.

We know at least one TOS sound effect survives: the Red Alert klaxon. The one in the preview sounded identical to the one from TOS.

Actually, we know that a generic-alarm soundeffect that's probably standard on a sound-effects board/CD all movie studios use was inserted for 1.5 seconds into a movie trailer.

They clearly meant to evoke the original klaxon (the actual source of the sound is immaterial).

To the poll:

I voted "yes" in the sense that it would be fun to have such sound effects and so on that could seamlessly incorporated (like the klaxon). However, I do not consider sound effects "canon" (given how little I care for the concept of "canon" in fiction in the first place, its relevance to sound effects is exceedingly marginal).

.
I want to hear the boatswain's whistle when the ship's intercom is used.

If they change the music, HE WON'T GET MY MONEY!11
J.J. will use the fight music, but he will add lyrics to that music so he doesn't have to pay the original composer (Gerald Fried?)...

...and those lyrics will be:
"da da, da da, da da da DAH da -- bum bum, bum bum, bum bum -- da da da da DAH da"

If your going to do it right you have to learn from the master
