On Big Brother I think the actual strategy is more nuanced and interesting but the cameras don't focus on it.
I agree with this, the strategy can get very deep and complicated in Big Brother, but they just don't choose to focus on that. You do get much more on feeds of course, but even then I feel we're missing the crucial piece, which is what these people are really thinking in the diary room. I hate that we only get little rehearsed snippets of diary rooms, rather than using it as a real confessional for these people to share their thoughts and intentions with us.
I'm wondering how they're going to do this for BB: Over the Top. Since there will only be one live episode a week, that's not enough time to show many DRs, so my hope is that they will put more DR clips online for viewing.
I already subscribe to All Access for the live feeds, so I will check out the new show. I'll give it a shot, but don't know how engaged I can remain. With so many shows starting back up in the fall it would be difficult to sustain the same level of interest that I have during the summer months. There just isn't enough time in the day. But, assuming it isn't a terribly shitty cast, I will try to pay some attention.
I actually think this "spin-off" could end up being better than the original, if only because they will have the flexibility to try out new things rather than being beholden to pandering to the TV-only audience. For instance, the producers put heavy emphasis on showmances, even if they aren't really a big deal in the house. Natalie and James were more friends than anything, but if you just watched the TV episodes you'd think they were about to get married. Zakiyah and Paulie's relationship wasn't portrayed the same way on TV/feeds either; on the feeds it was apparent how awful they are for each other, with Paulie being downright verbally abusive and manipulative and Zakiyah being crazy jealous. You also don't get to see how Nicole reacted to it, which is part of the reason that many dislike her this season. She was basically helping Paulie manipulate Zakiyah, sitting in on conversations with Paulie where he completely demeans Zakiyah and talks about how he can't wait to date other women, then going to her and convincing her that "I'm sure Paulie cares about you and wants a relationship, I just know he wants to be with you after all this!" to ensure she remained loyal to their alliance.
The TV audience is also much younger, while the feed-watchers trend much older (mostly those who have been die hard fans since the early seasons). Without the constraints of having to cater to the younger audience, I think what we'll see in this version will be much more unfiltered. We've also got "confirmation" (I'll believe it when I see it) that they will allow us to view all of the competitions and ceremonies live as they happen on the feeds. I'm hoping they use this unique opportunity to experiment with the show in positive ways! Hopefully some that will even trickle into the summer BB edition.
As for who wins this season...I don't really care at this point. James is a more likeable person but did so very little in the game. He just let things happen to him rather than trying to do anything himself. Total floater. Paul has said some despicable things, but it mostly seems like a front. On the feeds he actually seems like a nice guy. He's also very intelligent and I think actually played the best strategic and social game of the three. Nicole has defended some awful behavior (such as Paulie's or everyone 'picking on' Tiffany when she knew Tiffany was innocent of the accusations), and pretty much laid in bed with Corey all season. She even admits that she barely got to know the people that are now in the jury house. But, she did have some crucial competition wins and there was some strategy to certain choices she made. I guess in the end I'm hoping Paul wins.
