Official Trailer Review & Comments Thread!! [Spoilers, of course]

I've just read this thread - it's got me so excited! Can't wait to get the internet version tomorrow.

ETA: Okay, I wrote this before the last four replies - they are NOT what's getting me excited for the trailer! :alienblush:

It just hit me!.... Ye know what's going to happen, don't you?... Why have they released this trailer so early down the line? They know we've all be dying to see sneek peeks at it, and it's still six months till it hits the screen. It wouldn't surprise me in the least that Paramount has scouts out there taking note of all this to report back home to head office for the production to really vamp-up the film ready for May to what we all hope for!:guffaw:
Oh dear heavens I hope not. Once they see the ravings of the lunatic fringe, they may pull the movie altogether!:cardie:

ETA: this post is not directed at anyone in particular, just me ranting.
Rant away, my friend. Everybody has equal-ranting-opportunity here! ;)
I really fail to see the problem with the whole Earth vs space construction. Are you free to disagree with it? Sure, enjoy. Are you free to post a 90 page thesis on why Star Trek was way better when the ship was built in space? Sure thing. But I really don't like when people come in here to call Abrams & co. 'morons' or 'lazy' or 'unimaginative' based on this issue.
Agreed. "Moron" or "lazy" isn't right. "Unconcerned?" Possibly? "Arrogant?" Probably. "Incompetent?" Probably not.

The "built on Earth" criticism has no weight, for the simple reason that IT'S ONLY A FAN-CONCEIT THAT THE ENTERPRISE WAS BUILT IN SPACE.

The only "official" (not the same as "canon") statement on this was in the original series "bible," where it was stated (unambiguously) that the primary components of the ship were constructed on Earth at the San Francisco Naval Yards (a real place, even today), and assembled in orbit.

As far as I'm concerned, that's the only "allowable" version. So to those who think the ship "should have been built in orbit because that's how it's always been"... WRONG-O, Mary Lou! This might make more sense to you, personally, but it's not "official."

To those who want the ship to be completely constructed on the ground... even those who might be making a movie... same argument applies. Doing a new flick that shows it being built, intact, on the ground... that's also "wrong" and even if it's on-screen, I'll never accept it. (I might enjoy the movie anyway, though).

The thing that the "space-built" guys need to realize is that they're "making it up" and "being lazy" and "being unimaginative" every bit as much as anyone else who's deciding to claim that their own personal preference takes priority over the "original artist intent." And that means you guys... and it means Abrams and Co. if they've redefined this, too. You're all in the same boat... ;)
In TMP, the lounge doesn't fit in the saucer. The people who built the set KNEW this. They even had a few sketches of an alternate design that was just as good that would fit. And you know what? They chose to build it so it didn't fit for no other reason than that they felt like it.
Well, that's only because that portion of the ship was subcontracted to Gallifrey Shipyards...

Best reason of all for building it on the ground; the effects shot of it lifting off the ground, ascending into space. For right or wrong, ugly ship or not, that scene will probably be worth the price of admission alone.

Even if the filmmakers are obliged to conform to canon, they have no obligation to adhere to fanon (which would be impossible because fanon is even more inconsistent than canon).

Furthermore, they shouldn't have to adhere to the books any more than any other series did (which is "not at all" -- including VOY that contradicted "Pathways" eventually).

Nor should the movie adhere to "canon" history any more than alternate timeline of "Yesterday's Enterprise" or mirror universe of "In A Mirror Darkly" -- if the timeline is changed, the Enterprise can be fully assembled on Earth, not just have its main Earth-built components assembled in orbit.

Nah. Best reason is James T. Kirk looking up at it being constructed.

Better than special effects. :techman:

I'm not sure we'll see it lifting off anyway.

That is a good scene. I turned a full screen cap of it into my desktop.

Not seeing it lift off would be a bummer. We better not miss that in lieu of seeing Kirk/Uhurh shagging.

Sorry, but I'd rather see Zoe's front domes activate than the Enterprise's.

Oh, ok. :techman:

I have a real, hot girlfriend who activates her domes for me whenever I'd like. I want to see something in the movie I never saw before, the Ent launching from planetside qualifies.

I agree, that was a good scene. And I hope you're right about seeing the launch ... if it's left to the imagination, there's sufficient wiggle room for any of us to be right about how it got into space.

That's a rather harsh call coming from one who participates in that...:techman:

I'll just consider the source and walk on by...:techman: If you follow my posts long enough you will find that I usually advocate a reasoned approach. Occasionally the Haters Club pushes me -and many others- over the line.:vulcan:

Just saw the trailer in front of Bond tonight.

Very nice on the big screen!

Also noticed that the Corvette's rear license plate seems to have a pic of Kirk on it.

(or another similarly looking guy)

I have no idea why the Enterprise being built on Earth is a big deal. They've got anti-gravity in the 23rd Century. The Enterprise can fly near a star without getting pulled in. It's not like it'd be hard to get it off the ground.

The movie-era refit happened in space, but that doesn't mean the original construction had to happen there.

I'm a Star Trek fan, but even I wasn't sold on this film until I saw the trailer. No, it doesn't look like a Star Trek film, and that's fantastic. We had forty years of the same aesthetic and interest in it petered out. It's time for something new. If I want the same old thing, I'll pull out any of the hundreds of hours of old school Trek I've got on DVD.

From what I've read of your posts so far, they are commonly, to all of us, of an antagonistic approach anyway - at least be honest with yourself. But if you intend to subtlely, personally attack a total stranger you have absolutely no clue about their life journey to start with, I suggest you take them on outside this forum, one-to-one. Another thing... Maybe the lunatics (you so easily label) have far more beautiful things to offer than the usual-regular "stuff". If you feel you have the power to cast such harsh generalised judgements upon others, here is a Native American Sharmanic quote for you, to put you in proper perspective to consider such things more appropriately and respectfully, it goes like this... "Walk two weeks in the shoes of another person, and then you may be able to judge them correctly."...:techman::techman::techman: ... Now that would be a "good-true" story on human ethics and relationship for the new Trek down the line... :)
