Some cliches may work better than others, especially for this middle-aged viewer.Well, Trek might as well go for "cliches of teen rebellion," having long since exhausted most every other melodramatic cliche...
Well, everything works better for some people than others. That doesn't mean the quality of thought behind one cliche is fresher or better than another, though.
Maybe we're all simply most confortable with the cliches we know best. I certainly have thought for many years now that "Star Trek" is "comfort food" entertainment in a lot of ways.
And of course, what would the alternative be, anyway? Another cliche. Kirk as truly a "stack of books with legs." By the book, studious, serious. Then something happens to make him realize it's necessary to take chances. Or, Kirk the geek, who man's up in his first adventure. Or Kirk was just a normal guy and we get shots of him in study hall and playing squash, and eating dorm food. Whatever the choice, it's all in the execution. And in the end, they probably made the most entertaining choice to go with the in-your-face, I'm James TIBERIUS Kirk.
Star Trek as comfort food. I like that.
Since I'm not going to pay a baby-sitter to drag my wife to a James Bond movie (and in doing so piss off all the women in my family), and since I'm certainly not taking pre-teen girls to a Bond movie, and since I'm even more certainly not going alone (like I'd be allowed to), AND since I'm honestly not a Bond fan anyway, and the movie got decidedly mixed reviews, I guess I'll wait until Monday and watch the Trek trailer online.
