News Official Star Trek NFT Collection Announced

So are those upper things just random cargo modules, apparently? And does this ship get up to ludicrous speed? Seems like a lot of tiny shuttlebays as well.... :rommie:

I admit, it would be kind of fun to have access to this program just so we could practice making terrible kitbashes. ;)

The “base model” for that one seems to be the STO version of the Kobayashi Maru. https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Kobayashi_Maru

Pardon my language: NFT should stand for No F*****g Time, or Not F*****g True - both of which seem more apt for something as absurd as an NFT is.

My take on that is No F'n Thanks! :D Of course, in-universe it could stand for Non-Ferengi Transaction. Although the irony of all this comes across as a scheme invented by Ferengi to extort money across the galaxy. Picard's reaction would be, "What the heck is this shit?" and put his palm to his forehead.

You know, I've never seen such a divide between companies and customers when it comes to NFTs. Companies all say it's the future. They never end up giving compelling reasons as to why they think that, aside from the overall obvious fact that it's a way for them to make money. Yet the users, customers or gamers all feel it really isn't the future and that these companies are barking up the wrong tree. It really reminds me of randomized lootboxes that were all the rage until governments banned them for being considered gambling. NFTs seem to be the next iteration along those lines.

I hope SMG and Rapp got paid well to have to eat shit over this. I hope they feel genuine shame as well. I assume they do, as they seem like nice people.

The strangest thing is is no-one seems to have been coerced into it. Otherwise surely we'd have more alumni behind the whole thing (Doug Jones, Anson Mount etc.).

It's sad to see Rapp, who I like a lot, claiming to have done 'research' (whilst he was busy attending a convention panel) when all the research amounts to is corporate bullet points.

The whole thing is just awful. As you say, all involved in the promotion of this shit seem like nice people and indeed it is a shame and shameful.

I think I'm done with this thread now. There really is nothing else to say.

I'm glad, though. It looks like the idea disturbed a lot of Trek fans, which speaks very well of the community.

Yeah, I tend to think that the Trek community as a whole is more tech-knowledgeable and aware than most, which strikes me as a terrible idea to have pitched it to in the first place. I think it's a good thing to talk about in order to bring more general awareness of how terrible these things are.

Agreed, and another aspect of our community is that for many of us the appeal of a future where greed and want are outliers rather than the norm is a positive one, so when we see an obvious, ham handed attempt at cashing in on that by a corporation who truly does not care for the future we want, we call it out.

Yeah, I wouldn't pat ourselves on the back too hard for this. I don't think I've seen a crypto/NFT gimmick-bandwagon by a major brand or franchise that hasn't been received negatively.

Yeah, because he's not getting his cut...
True. I appreciate Gene for Star Trek, but there were so many others who made it what it is today, and Gene definitely wanted his money, as poor Alexander Courage could point out.

Still, it does seem kind of funny (to me) that a franchise built on the notion that greed, want, myopic societal structures based on scarcity have been dramatically reduced if not outright eliminated in this future where humanity is growing and reaching outward to the stars in mutual cooperation has flown so far and fast over the heads of the suits who can only see dollar signs, that they think NFTs are a sure bet, even when dismissed in other fandoms that don't embrace such positions.

Yep, I just think he'd be completely against the idea of something flying against his vision such as this. There are ways to make money in ways that respect the fans and its legacy, but this isn't it. NFTs reek of desperation.
