Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and why?

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

TWOK: Because it had a great villian and re-energizes the franchise.

ST09: Because is was fastpaced, funny and re-energized the franchise

FC: Because the TNG crew needed a win.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

TMP- Combined cinematic filmmaking with a genuine science fiction story... both are rarities in this franchise.

TWOK- A Forester/O'Brian inspired yarn of naval adventure on the high seas with some marvelous performances from the lead actors.

XI- Made me remember that nine year old kid who used to sprawl out on Granny's living room rug and watch Star Trek in his pajamas with a pair of cardboard Spock ears taped to his head. Nit-picks didn't matter in those days... Trek was just fun.

1. TMP. For all its flaws of pacing and rushed post-production, it's the one that still evokes that element of Star Trek that captivated me as a 9-year-old: the feeling that I was watching serious adults at work in an SF millieu, not children (E.T., which I hated) or overgrown children (Star Wars, which I loved). When I watch it now, I get the same feeling I get from the earliest episodes of TOS--that space is a place of wonder and terror and, as much as our heroes may love each other, they sometimes don't like each other much, or even themselves. TMP is the only Trek film that comes close to challenging our expectations. Even the Enterprise herself is a scary, murdering goddess.

2. TWOK. I like this one almost as much as TMP; only the narrowest of margins separate the two in my esteem. TWOK feels like a great second season episode--the character interactions are in place but not overstated and the actors seem comfortable in a way they don't in TMP (though that discomfort works in TMP). Montalban is incredible and the film is damn near perfectly paced. Pity the production feels so cheap, with the silly blinky lights everywhere and the sad, generic communicator and tricorder props, not to mention some of the set decoration for Regula 1.

3. Trek XI. While there was only a razor-thin margin between TMP and TWOK, there is, to paraphrase the space hippies of "The Way to Eden," a mile-wild emptiness between two and three (on my list). As much fun as I had in Trek XI, it was ultimately a very, very stupid movie (much like Star Wars, actually) which turned the serious adults of TOS and my aforementioned film favorites into arrested brats. It's quite likely that, once the novelty wears off completely, FC will go back to being my third favorite, though my TOS love is strong enough that it may not.

The only Trek films I'd stop to watch all the way through, these days, would be ST 09, ST:TWOK and ST:TMP - pretty much in order of preference.

Star Trek XI very closely following FC. It was a compelling trial-by-fire story, and it re-introduced us to TOS and did away with the static one-dimensional archetypes
When?

If you have to ask that, there's nothing I can say that will make you think so.
if they were static one dimensional archetypes, how did they make it through 3 seasons and 6 features

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

It's hard to pick to or three, because I go through phases of liking different ones for different reasons..
But Top Three of the moment would be

Trek XI
TMP
TWOK

Every once in a while FC will pop in there, along with TUC. I like TFF when I am really baked, but never any other time..

TVH always sounds like a cheesy x-me$$ special and Nemesis puts me to sleep.

I do like that Romulan Senete sequence in the opening, though.

Star Trek (2009) - This is an awesome movie. The pace is perfect. The casting is perfect. The special effects are cutting-edge. The music is catchy. I think the only weak spot is a subpar villain.

First Contact - It's an exciting movie with outstanding performances by Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner. My only problem with the movie is Zephram Cochran's "Star Trek" line.

Star Trek VI - I haven't seen the movie in several years, but I watched it over and over when I first got into ST. It's a good film.

The TOS movies were good about that, actually. That was directed at the TOS TV show itself. And how should I know? I don't like the show, so you tell me.

TMP - it's pure Roddenberry, great soundtrack, and has a fascinating story.
TWOK - Khan, Horner, and Nick Meyer. :)
Generations - It has the D, the TNG uniforms, TNG feel. It gets progressively more disappointing, but I'm a TNG nut so I can't help myself.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

They are all great, except for Nemesis and the latest one.

TMP is a masterpiece. The production design, the musical score and the soundtrack set the foundations for the next 30 years of Star Trek.

TWOK. Excellent. A great story, excellent direction, the TOS ensemble at its best, with excellent performances from Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley and Montalban. One of the greatest musical scores not only in Trek, but film history. Groundbreaking visual effects.

TSFS. The movie that brought the ST universe to life with many new ship classes, various new places and aliens. The destruction of the Enterprise is a great moment.

I could go on and on. TFF is also great. It's the movie that feels the closest to TOS. Great interaction between the characters. A great villain (Spock's brother! A Vulcan who strayed from the path of logic! Seeking God! I really love that). And an extremely good musical score.

If you don't like the show, how can you even cobble up the 'one dimensional archetype' trype? Just grabbing words and stringing them together? I mean, I dislike Daniel Craig as James Bond, but I don't say he is a one-dimensional actor, I say he is really ugly. My criticism is reflected in a point of view. What the hell is a one dimensional archetype, sounds like ROCKY JONES SPACE RANGER.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

My three favorites are first XI for its emotion, second VI TUC for its political depth, and third II TWOK because it is so cool.
My other favorites are TMP (The Directors Cut), VIII FC (TNG at its best), and IV TVH which is such a good and light hearted film.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

Well I have actually more than three favorites but the ones I enjoy the most are:

(11) Star Trek: I love the movie from the very first time seeing it. I guess because it was new and was an untold story of TOS crew begaings. I also loved the timeline change. I also love seeing how these new actors would pull off the charcters of TOS crew, and I totaly amazed how well they did and how so much they looked like and acted liked the orginals.

(4) The Voyage Home: I just love this movie because its just plan fun all the way through the movie. I loved the action, and also the comendy. Some the things that happened in the movie kind of remind me of some of the episodes of TOS. Like for instance time travel. I liked how they had to try to blend in with that time with out missing up the timeline. It was also fun to watch Spock rediscovering himself after his katra was back in himself.

(3) The Search For Spock: I think this is great movie, because this movie all about friendship. Kirk went trough legnths in order to save both Spock and McCoy. He didn't care what he had to do to help his friends, even if it cost him cast out of Starfleet. To me that was real friends and family do in order to help the ones they love and care about when they are sick or need help.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

#1) TMP, because it is epic, beautiful & deep.

#2) Voyage Home, because of the "Do you guys like Italian?" scene.:guffaw: No, it's just a cool ride all the way.

#3) ST09, because it was pure OS fun.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

The "Do you guys like Italian?" scene is the only scene in that movie I like. It may be the single funniest scene Shatner and Nimoy have ever done together.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

I think TVH is a great all-around Trek adventure, even with a few pacing problems and a "Save teh Earth" recycled plot. TWOK is superiour film-making, but TVH just has a killer script. IMO.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

I hate picking just three :)

In no particular order:

First Contact: Sure, everyone raves about the action scenes, and so do I. But this film was just full of heart. One would expect the Cochrane subplot to be slow, but it never really was thanks to Cromwell and Frakes (as actor AND director), and some of the Cochrane scenes are among my favorite. But Lily vs. Picard, Worf standing up to Picard, STEPPENWOLF, and Troi drunk were all just wonderful for me. To top it off, if one didn't get tingles from the actual moment of First Contact, then to me you're not a human being :)

Remarkably, the scenes that I did find slow and ill-paced were the ones with Data and the Queen on screen together. I was just much more interested in Lily, Picard, and the Away Team.

TWOK: It's almost obligatory to put this film on any Top-whatever list, isn't it? I don't think I can add much more to what's been said before. However, I love:
-the battles were essentially submarine battles in space (great, great pacing)
-the multitude of narrative themes, from age (Kirk) to duty (Spock) to ambition (Saavik) to revenge (of course, Khan)
-that somehow, someway, by going smaller scale than TMP the creative crew managed to make something more epic than V'Ger (talk about humanity over machines!)

TUC: One thing that TOS handled pretty well in its run, even with the goofy 3rd season, was political intrigue. It almost feels like Jack Ryan in space, and I very much appreciate variety in stories. While Trek films have been more about exploring humanity than actual space, I was glad that this film went to the darker side to find the light. I could have done without some of the slapstick, but the fact that Trek could go down such a route in the first place opened up a great deal of storytelling possibilities. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy all shined pretty much equally here.

And the music. One could argue that another movie had a better score, but this one remains my favorite. The urgency, the epic feel, etc. etc.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

1. TWOK:
Solid story, solid performances, and really recaptured the feel of Trek which hadn't been seen much since season 2. The new uniforms gave a much more Professional look to Trek. The TMP uniforms were interesting and I love the idea of variants, but they weren't uniforms as far as I'm concerned. I very much liked the idea of the ultimate weapon being a device used to create life, reinforcing the idea that just because something is created for good, doesn't mean it'll be used for good purposes. Spock's death was one of the most well handled deaths in the history of media. Handled so well, it loses nothing by his return in TSFS. Few other deaths in movies or TV could say the same.

2. Trek XI:
Wile many Trek movies have tried to truly be an Epic, this one finally does the job. Starting off right from the beginning with a bang and a heartbreak, continuing with a great blend of comedy, action and drama through to the end. Finally Trek loses it's obsession with technobabble and makes the special effects and space age tech serve the story instead of the other way around. I know some people are really upset that the original look of the series was not maintained, but I'm glad that they updated it. The series is supposed to be in the 23rd century, computers and technology have come so far since 1966 that the old bridge consoles and switches just had to be replaced. I also like the reimagining of the interior of the ships, with shutlebays being more like huge parking lots, rather than a small valet station, and on and on...

3. First Contact:
The best of the TNG movies, despite Insurrection being very close In my opinion. Brings Worf back into the cast well and with the most explanation of any of the films. 2 seperate stories go on, both interesting. Picard does very well as an action hero in this film while still retaining his character. Riker, Geordi and Troi have a lot of interesting and amusing scenes on Earth which does a good job at not just making the film dark and action, action, action. This doesn't have the feel of TNG too much, but the film was so well done, it doesn't matter.

That's cool, baby. I wasn't disputing your love of TVH (in a thread like this, I think that's rude) so much as agreeing with your choice of representative scene.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

Oh, I wanted to note, if there was a fourth spot, it would be a tossup between TVH, TMP, and XI. TVH wasn't particularly deep, nor did it need to be, it was a lighthearted romp with all the charm in the world. I still consider TMP to be highly underrated as a piece of hard sci-fi that could have been better with more bits of editing. XI, while highly enjoyable, is too new for me to be objective, but I can't deny its fun and scale.
