Ocampa (Kes) ideas

Good to hear from you again, Lynx.

As for "Before and After", I once though about writing this timeline down myself, but decided against it (I just wanted to wrote a book about Kes, and it was one of the options. But I eventually decided to write what became "Another Kes"). I also once began to write my own version of Voyager l, with Tom/Kes as a couple and Neelix being like Kea's older brother. I stopped at "Investigations". Maybe I'II continue it one day.

As of now, once this project is finished, I have no plans to write more on Kes and Ocampa (except probably some appearance of Kes in "Tandis"). Speaking of which, do you have any other idea / fact / something to inspire a story as these above? I am running out of ideas, and I still want to write a few stories.

I really need something that would help me begin writing a story. Can you give me anything? An idea, a question, a statement, disagreement... Anything that could help me start a story.

I have some ideas and half-written story lines which I just have to make something out of.
Lack of time for writing plus problems with finishing some storeis have messed it up for me.
I was actually planning to finish one story this summer but a lot of other things messed up the time i had planned for writing so I have to get back to the story when I have time for it.

But these half-made stories are more in the style of what I've written before, not anything about the Ocampa species as such in them.

Right now, I have no ideas for the Ocampa, we'll see if I can come up with something.

I have one idea right now. I will try to write it soon.

Edit: It is up now.
Also, I have a half - baked idea of my own that I could use some help with (although I have doubts if it is compatible with this project). It is basically to make Kes meet and talk with Jadzia Dax. And it must be host - Jadzia, not "Jadzia talking through Ezra" thing. Kes must be from main timeline (well, mine main timeline - the one Kes that composed this project "in - universe" and which appeared a few times), but Jadzia Dax can be from any timeline (canon or newly created), but still had to be assigned to Deep Space Nine and first three years must have went for her roughly the same.

I would appreciate any help, especially in how they could meet.

Speaking of Jadzia Dax, here's a new thread I made - a response to some things I read on this forum:

You know, the more I read about the new Star Trek, the more I read how it changed, how it's values changes, how it's tone changed, I can't help but think about Kes. Because it feels like with her. Kes represents all that made old Star Trek great. She was curious, she gained experience older time, she is deeply emphatic, understanding, forgiving… but also very determined and dangerous when forced to be. But she prefers to solve problems with diplomacy, with looking at things from another perspective, by finding a solution acceptable to all. Things that were in old Star Trek, and are lacking in the new one. Kes represents all of this. You can say that her destruction destroyed these values in Trek as well. Her destruction in that Season 6 episode.

The empathy shown in TOS… in “Devil in the Dark” and “Arena”... Are exactly the kind of things that Kes has. And, if you look at the lack of it in modern Trek… At the treatment of gorn in SNW, like they were Xenomorphs… you realize this is not the Trek that Kes came from. Not a Trek that would welcome Kes back.

You can say, old Star Trek died with Kes. She represents all the right things in Star Trek.

I agree with you here.

Kes represented what Star Trek stood for in her way to learn, search and explore.
Her compassion and kindness but also her strong will, curiosity and determination was exactly what Star Trek stood for.

Unfortunatley, Star Trek has also been affected by the current trend of doom, gloom, gore and even exaggerated political correctness which have made almost all movies and TV series in this decade and the previous decade unwatchable.

Maybe not all films l and series, but certainly most of them. Fortunately for me (and other fans of it) Galactic Civilizations is not a film or tv series, it's a video game series. It has both dark and light moments, all violence (except shop to ship combat) isn't shown and I don't see exaggerated political correctness there.

What worries me most is that these trends are not only affecting canon stuff, but fanfiction as well. Not all of it, most still a lot. Which is probably why there's not much fanfiction about Kes being made now.

I agree with you.

Honestly, I feel a bit guilty now since it should be my responsibility to come up with Kes stories.

But I have had very little time in the recent years due to work and such. However, I have some half-finished projects and when inspiration strikes............. :)

Unfortunately. I even gave that idea of making Kes a Jedi (after all, her abilities, especially pre - Gift, are quite similar to using the Force
) and having a lightsaber (of course, only for use if talking fails. And lightsaber is supposed to be a primarily defensive weapon). No one else used it, despite me writing it would be all right.

So, people don't write about Kes even when I give them ideas. One of the secondary reasons I held this project is to make more people interested in Kes and stories about her. Because she is both the consolidation of all Star Trek is about and would make a very good Jedi (probably better than most canon ones).

The Ocampa are a fun race to speculate about.

The short story "Places of Exile" says that Ocampans normally give birth to litters (a common fan theory) and that developing fetuses telepathically gain knowledge from their mother in the womb, for faster childhood development.

My personal theories might be a bit more out-there. I've posted some of these ideas on this site before, and on TV Tropes.
  • Ocampans form telepathic bonds with their mates, which can have unpredictable affects in other species. This is why Neelix's personality was so unstable in early seasons, and why Tom Paris was so out of character in the segments of "Before and After' where he and Kes are married. Between two Ocampa, the telepathic bond is what ensures the unconditional loyalty Kes mentioned.
  • The Ocampa are actually humanoid plants, like Zhaan from "Farscape." Their humanoid form was caused by that race from TNG who created all humanoid life in the galaxy. Being a plant would add new weight to the Ocampa's relationship to plants, and Kes's anger at being kept from the sun.
  • Ocampan telepathy is enhanced in the presence of other telepaths. This is canonically true for Vulcans, so why not Ocampa. Kes's telepathy grew steadily under Tuvok's training; took off shockingly fast after only a couple days with Tennis or whatever his name was; and just two or three conversations with 8472 made her evolve into an energy being.
