O'Brien out, Leno back in?

Yeah Jay has a healthy ego and wanted the Tonight Show back, but I also believe he was genuinely concerned about keeping his staff employed
During the writers strike Conan immediately paid staff salaries out-of-pocket. Leno had to be guilted into it by the press:

"We haven't heard from [Jay] since the second or third day of the strike," said one Leno staffer who was let go Friday. "He called on speakerphone while we were in our daily meeting and said, 'Don't look for other jobs, no one's going to lose their house, we'll get though this.' Two weeks ago, we got the heads up that we had two more weeks (of pay) and that's it. Everyone wondered, 'Is Jay going to come through?' And nothing happened."
Leno is a fake populist.

You know I watched Jay making his case.... I kind of see where he's coming from now. He didn't think he was taking the Tonight Show back, because he was assured Conan would agree to 12:05... so he agreed to the deal then Conan didn't and he was suddenly bound to show up at 11:35 with no host of Tonight....

So it's still a little iffy, but I see where he's coming from there.

So why didn't he talk to Conan first before agreeing to it? Because he knew what Conan's answer would be...

[I don't buy the idea that he had a hand in orchestrating the entire thing; my impression is he's just one of these guys who goes where he's told and doesn't ask too many questions.

 yes, that sounds exactly like Leno...

I just watched Leno for the first time in years, and I tried watching it with an open mind, but I found it unbelievably unfunny. The only segment that was even remotely funny was the 911-thing. Why the fuck does anyone watch this crap? I was sick of even looking at his hideous mug after two minutes.

And how lame were the shots at Letterman and Conan at the very end?
If you're pissed at them for attacking you (which I would understand) go all out and return fire, but that was pathetic...

eta: Another thing I forgot to mention: what the hell's going on with Leno constantly explaining his jokes? That would be annoying even if the jokes were funny, but since they are not it's even more obnoxious.

^^ Good observations, Wilco. I've always felt Leno was good at expressing comedy and humor for people who hate comedy and humor. I find him hard to endure at all times when he is on screen.

^ Who still has his job... what does that teach you?

Leno is what the Marines call A Buddy Fucker. A decent person doesn't fuck over his buddy. Jay Leno is the kind of guy who will smile all the while sticking a knife in a person's back.

Conan on FOX would work out like this...

8pm-10pm FOX Primetime programing
10pm-11pm Local news(Our local news is an hour...)
11pm-12am Conan On FOX!!!

Usually after the local news they show stuff reruns of comedies anyways...

[edit]Or would they try and do his show at 11:35pm?

I think one of the problems is that FOX is contractually locked into those reruns. I'm not sure if they're locked into a time frame, but if you put them somewhere else, you gotta put what its replacing somewhere else, then that somewhere else, and so on and so forth.

The Fox affiliates don't want Conan because they make money off of their syndication reruns.

I know this has be posted somewhere in here but...

http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/01/11/fox-suits-on-nabbing-conan-obrien-we-are-not-free-to-talk/

Fox insiders have confirmed that the network’s affiliates are open to a late-night show at 11 p.m., especially if it involved the caliber of an O’Brien or even a Jay Leno. Reilly reminded the press that many stations already have contracts in place for syndicated programming. “That becomes a very sensitive business discussion in a market-to-market basis,” he said. “If you have a top piece of talent, it makes it a conversation to have.”

I hope something can be worked out.

Nice guys finish last, ALWAYS and Leno is a prick. John Stewart stood behind his writters and so did Dave, Leno wouldn't be even remotely funny if it weren't for his writers. I haven't watched Conann in a while , but I started watching recently because of all this debacle and I keep forgeting he's on at that time and he's just really funny I can't help but laugh, leno never Realy made me laugh

I bet it will. It's to good of an opportunity for Fox.

I've been amazed as I've been watching bits and pieces of the late night programming that I've never watched before. The ONLY one of them I find to be a genuinely funny person is Conan. With the possible exception of Jimmy Fallon - his "bits" are mildly humorous, but as himself he's painful to watch. Dave is wry and deprecating, and I guess I can see where some people might find that funny, but it does not make me laugh.

Jay Leno's show looks like someone scoured the internet for threadbombs and typos and tried to make a prime time television show out of it. :wtf:

Oh wait, I take it back about Conan being the only one. Craig Ferguson is also funny. But since he's kinda kept out of it all, I forgot about him, and haven't watched him much.

Kimmel's style reminds me of Dave - wry and cutting, but not so much funny as just clever, witty, smart. Not that Conan isn't those things - he's that too, but he makes me laugh hysterically while doing it. Jimmy and Dave, when they get it right, I'm nodding and groaning appreciatively. When Conan gets it right, I can't breathe. ;)

Wow is it gonna suck when this whole debacle calms down. late night is more entertaining than it's been in years.

Agreed. It's kinda fun hearing the hosts openly talk about each other now. In the past, they would either barely acknowledge the competition, or make only subtle references to them. And only RARELY did they mention them by name.

Now, it's pretty much open season on everyone. lol

^The best joke I heard about that came from Conan last week... that Tiger had checked into a sex rehab clinic. Actually, he's checked into three, but none of the clinics know about each other.

Not really. It's mostly just open season on Leno. :bolian:
