O'Brien out, Leno back in?

I just read a news blurb email on my phone that apparently NBC is worried about the golden globes this weekend because Ricky Gervais has shown his support for Conan and there is a rumor he is going to show that support at some point during the award show...

Given Gervais' comments on Conan's Show, they should be worried. On the up side it might cause more people to tune in. I never watch them, but I'm tempted.

Apparently his comment about "I'm live so they can't move me" combined with his willingness to take shots at the network is what has NBC worried.

Oh I wouldn't be surprised if there were a TON of jokes or comments made on the situation. And not just from Gervais, but everyone else too.

Although it's also possible the Haiti thing will put a damper on the whole event, and everyone will be focused on that instead...

So when Leno retires in 1-3 years then what NBC?

Who says Leno will retire in anything resembling that time frame. Everything that's ever been written or said about the man indicates that he would die with his comedy boots on. Perhaps he'll retire eventually. But barring some tragic health complication, I can't see the thought of retirement even remotely crossing his mind for at least another 10-20 years.

I'm hoping a whole host of celebs boycott [Jay Leno] now and in the future in whatever capacity he's around.

To some extent, that was already happening. The other networks took such umbridge at putting Jay Leno in prime time that no actor on a prime time series on another network was allowed to appear on the show. Kelsey Grammer mentioned this when he was on Jay Leno a few weeks ago. He said that he was only now allowed to appear now that Hank had been canceled.

Leno should have never accepted The Jay Leno Show. He should have quit when Conan took over The Tonight Show. Letterman had a very good line summarizing this: "When Johnny Carson quit, he quit".

I don't really understand all of the demonizing that surrounds Jay Leno in this situation. I mean, he was the one that was forced out of The Tonight Show in the first place. You could argue that all of this could have been avoided if Conan O'Brien hadn't been so eager to take over The Tonight Show, forcing out Jay Leno before he was ready.

I also don't understand why Conan thinks that moving The Tonight Show back a half-hour is so unacceptable, unless HIS ego can't help but see it as a demotion. I don't understand what this "Tonight Show legacy" is that he's supposedly protecting. Really, all The Tonight Show is is a name & a timeslot. Its only other defining characteristics are its format (which has been copied by nearly every other late night talk show) and its host (which has changed multiple times over the years).

They gave The Tonight Show to Conan O'Brien because they didn't want to lose him to another network. They gave Leno The Jay Leno Show for the same reason. Now that The Jay Leno Show isn't doing so good, they want to cancel it but they still want to keep Jay Leno somehow. I'm sure NBC would like to keep both Leno & O'Brien and give them both the best time slot possible. Unfortunately, it's not possible for 2 shows to be on the same network in the same time slot.

Perhaps they could attempt some sort of Law & Order: Criminal Intent solution, and have The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on Monday-Wednesday-Friday and The Jay Leno Show on Tuesday-Thursday.

:guffaw:I loves me some good Downfall parodies (although my favorite is still the one where he finds out that they changed the ending of the Watchmen movie).

I think you are right...it was Letterman's dream job too...heck, even Carson wanted Letterman to take it over when he retired, right?
Yep. Carson would apparently send in jokes to Letterman from time to time too.

Leno said they set up the transition from Jay to Conan five years ago because they didn't want bad blood like when he took over from Carson. Great job there!

There has been some talk that Carson may have actually had some hand in setting up the Letterman move to CBS.

No shit, NBC is going to get bashed into the ground come Saturday, maybe they want that, they realize that's the only way people will bother watching their shit of a channel.

I guess we should have seen this coming, with all the bitching Leno was doing in the months leading up to his final show. It was obvious he wasn't crazy about the situation.

But I just figured, in the end, that he would have had more respect for Conan than this. I mean, yeah he was pushed out, but it's not like it was the very next day; he was given another 5 freakin years!

He even admitted afterwards in interviews that he was simply coasting and not putting everything he could into it. Why not let someone new come in and bring some fresh ideas to it?

Or did he think he was bigger than the Tonight Show...?

How fast do you think FOX can get a stage set up for him? I mean, they would be crazy not to strike while the iron is hot and they have the chance to grab second place at least if not first place in the late night wars with him moving over there.
