That was another thing I didn't really get - Obama's strongest support is in the young, so it seems odd to use the image of probably one of the most popular movie characters of the last few years aimed at that demographic to discredit him.
All in all, a bizarre choice indeed. Strikes me that someone just found a photoshop they liked online and used that.
Before you know it they'll be comparing Obama to Superman because they think Obama's not from the US. That'll show him!

The Joker wasn't a socialist, he was an anarchist and agent of chaos. Obama is neither a socialist nor an anarchist nor desiring to create chaos. It's completely inaccurate and stupid in every way imaginable.
Who said the poster should be banned? Certainly no one in the article posted in the OP. People in the thread started bringing it up either as a distraction or because they didn't read the OP.
The only thing said in the OP's article is that one guy called for the people who put up the poster to reveal themselves and defend their position. Which is silly and pointless because their position is obviously idiotic.

If you don't understand the history of why that caricature would be racist when applied to a black man and only insulting when applied to a white man, there's not much hope of you truly understanding anything being discussed here.

Turnabout would be calling Obama a racial epithet if Bush were called one. Turnabout is not answering criticism of Bush intelligence and rather humble appearance by involving tried and true racial stereotypes.
Well, it's a given that the President of the U.S. will always be a target for satire and mockery, so it's no surprise that whoever made the poster would draw a parallel to a popular movie and character, as it's timely.
However, I do think Hutchison is correct when he challenges the creator of this poster to come forward and identify him/herself. If we know who that person is, then we can determine if there is racist intent behind it. What does this person have to hide, I wonder?
Of course, the poster illustrates the wingnut aspect of opposition to Obama and his policies. "He's a socialist! He's not one of us!" So there is a shade of racism inherent in the criticism, as I do think a portion of the opposition toward the 44th president is racially motivated.
