Notably missing characters that would be cool in the next movie.

Ronson2k10

There has been much talk of what the next movie could bring about. I'm not really talking about the episode they were in perhaps being repeated in a new movie but the character from that showing up to hint at some continuity between the then and now. I know the reboot has a whole new timeline and therefore 'anything' can happen and I'm hoping the list won't include every character that we've seen in TOS but the ones that had the greatest impact and perhaps had a history that began prior to the TOS series.

I'll start off ..

Captain Tracy (USS Exeter). The loss of his crew made him lose control. He was also in his own mind stranded with no way to leave the planet. He flies in the face of the Prime Directive by keeping the combs in power via the use of his phaser. He was a person Kirk respected despite what he had become.

I'd love to see Admiral Nagura rip Kirk a new one (and be very right to do so) bad enough that it stayed with Scotty and the rest of the crew forever. Perhaps on the bridge in front of everyone.

Honestly, I just hope Pike continues to have an important role in future movies.

That said, I think it would be neat if Kor showed up!

Christopher Pike and Christine Chapel. Pehaps some alien characters we haven't seen in peripheral roles.

-- Christine Chapel. She and Uhura would get in a catfight over Spock. OK, maybe not.
-- Kor, Koloth, or Kang. Old school. Kirk versus the best of the Klingons.
-- DaSalle, Kyle, and Leslie. It'd be neat just to have some the old names thrown around.

And,
-- Gary Mitchell. But Kirk has no idea who he is, because they never met.

Chapel and Number One (and no, not played by twins). Lt Colt. Janice Rand. Basically we need more girls!!! on the USS: Sausage Fest. Bring back Gaila, too.

Egh. I vote...not. :p

Rand (my number one choice as a revamped Rand is our best chance of getting an action heroine), Chapel, T'Pau, Carol Marcus, Number One, Ann Mulhall (as an engineer and astrobiologist), a female admiral, Gary Mitchell, any of the established TOS klingons. Gaila I can live without unless we're going to have Orions as the antagonists - I don't want the newest recurring female character to be little more than a sex joke.

I tried to find the script to 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' but couldn't from 'Memory Alpha' though

Kirk and Mitchell meet while Kirk is instructing at the SFA. He was a Lieutenant then though. Don't quite know how a lieutenant would be qualified to do that but anyway. Seems your right though as he's a captain now. More qualified perhaps I could accept the minor continuity thing if we started the second movie back at the academy with Kirk instructing (perhaps Mitchell)?

They do have a bit more history though besides there first meeting. So that would be hard to weave into a movie. Unless we take the three year passage of time where Kirk is at the academy (we pick the story back up there in STXI) as a chance for those two to have met? Just because we didn't see them meet didn't mean it didn't happen. I'm sure plenty went on during the 3 years from the time Kirk boards the shuttle till the time he's heading off to 'Study' at Gaila's pad (well Gaila).

During that time he and Pike may have even been on assignment as they would need to get some 'sea legs' during there training. I'm sure it didn't all happen in San Francisco. So there is a bit of wiggle room in there with that blank (3 year) space to add in back story in the second movie.

Admiral or Captain Cartwright
Carol Marcus
Commodore Decker
Richard Daystrom
Marla Mcgivers

Agreed - more female characters!

But I'm pretty sure Gaila is dead - she would have been on one of the ships destroyed at Vulcan, wouldn't she?

Not necessarily. We never actually heard which ship she was assigned to; it could have been the Enterprise.

I'd like to see Pike continue with the series. I don't care if we ever see a single other character from TOS...though I suspect that Khan will be along sooner or later.

Dr. M'Benga. Hell, why didn't we see a young medical intern M'Benga studying on Vulcan on XI?

Or was he killed by Nero's Octopus Drill?

Using the age of the actor who played him in the Original Series as a guide, M'Benga would have been 18 years old in 2258 and just beginning his course of pre-med study. His internship on Vulcan wouldn't happen yet for several years, and may now (due to the non-existence of Vulcan) take place instead at the University Medical Center of Vulcanis Lunar Colony. (The parents of newborn Tuvok will be his next-door neighbors, and his friendship with them will be an influence in their eventual decision to steer Tuvok toward Starfleet Academy.)

Or was he killed by Nero's Octopus Drill?
Please... Giant Space Drill (or GSD.) ;)

Not a script, but a good transcript:

Chapel and Number One (and no, not played by twins). Lt Colt. Janice Rand. Basically we need more girls!!! on the USS: Sausage Fest. Bring back Gaila, too.

Not necessarily. We never actually heard which ship she was assigned to; it could have been the Enterprise.

If it had been the Enterprise, she would have been in the end scene with Kirk relievin' Pike. Every other character was in the scene - why not her?

'cause her ship went BOOM!

Gaila did seem pretty excited when she turned to Uhaura. Where as she was rather disappointed. I watched the movie again and if she has a last name we don't know what it is and we don't hear her first name called (if that is the only name Orions have). It's true though we don't see her again after that moment. Not with Uhaura or with Kirk. He's not supposed to be there but then he is so busy anyway.

She seemed to have been a disposable character. That's quite a shame really.

That also brings up something else too. Most of Star Fleets cadet core is gone now. All lost at Vulcan. Those that perhaps would have been alive would certainly not survive the planets destruction. However at the end of the movie the auditorium is full? I would think recruitment would go down if nearly all the cadets lives were lost? Anyway.

Oh and thanks for the link to the transcript M'Sharak I found what I needed at memory alpha about Kirk instructing at the time Kirk and Mitchell meet. He was a Lieutenant in TOS history when that happened. The new timeline doesn't preclude him not meeting him and thank God he wasn't a cadet or he would have been killed with the rest of the cadets at Vulcan. So it still could happen perhaps?

I would love to see Mr Arex. He's brilliant.

Angelina Jolie as Number One would be awesome. Using the back story from the old novel Vulcan's Glory would be fitting, as I think people could quite easily believe she was genetically engineered. And they'd have to call her "Numb" for short.

While not at all specified in the movie, perhaps it was only the cadets present in the hall at that time when the Admiral ordered their emergency activation and thusly the only ones of sufficient education to be any use on board a starship?

Remember when the Narada attacked San Francisco Bay, there were still cadets on the Academy campus.
