No Man's Sky

Yeah if the game is just the exploration of a randomly generated universe, then its going to be a pretty boring game. I'm seriously hoping there is more to the game, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, and that's the thing. It could be a beautiful system, but I really do wish they'd have implemented a mission system to it. Then at least it would give you goals to strive to. I've mentioned it before, but Pulsar: The Lost Colony does many of the same things, but with a different approach. It has planets, space station, randomization, and missions. It's primarily a multiplayer co-op based game where Trek-like specializations and battlestations come into play. You have to work together in order to succeed. You can beam down onto planets on away teams to complete missions together. I wish part of NMS were more like that, but with a storyline to keep you going.

Not going to lie, I'm tempted to re-title this thread to "No Man's Spore."

Yup. If you give me a date and you miss that date, you better have a great reason.

I believe in delivering on what you say.

I kid, I kid! :)

I remember when the Star Trek 25th Anniversary game was coming out. It was routinely late. Back in those days Interplay actually had their phone number at the bottom of their ads, so I called them and asked when it was coming out. I don't recall what they said, but I don't think it came out whenever they said it was. After that, I noticed more and more games coming out later than what we were told. Late games haven't phased me since the late 90's.

I think the problem is the game's been really hyped up, and maybe announced way too early. In reality, it's likely normal to have internal delays, but when you have a high-profile game everyone is looking forward to and you set a release date when you can't really commit to it, sort of like Duke Nukem Forever having been in development hell, you just have more attention drawn to it. In this case, the developers really shouldn't commit to a release date unless they're really sure of it by having things locked down. And I'm sure Early Access has made people feel a bit impatient these days.

There is a difference between a minor delay and a series of delays.

Don't know if you're responding to me, but I've lost track of the amount of games that have had a series of delays, the Star Trek 25th Anniversary game being the first of many. It kept missing it's release dates over and over, that's why I finally called them. Every time the expected date came, I was calling Electronics Boutique to see if it was in...nope. Again, this is nothing even remotely new.

In this case, the developers really shouldn't commit to a release date unless they're really sure of it by having things locked down. And I'm sure Early Access has made people feel a bit impatient these days.

Agreed

I agree especially in this case here, but these release dates generally aren't made public "needlessly", this industry has developed quite a few of practical constraints that put a lot of pressure on publishers to set fixed dates - even when there is a significant chance for delays, which of course there always is with software dev

Again, I generally agree - particularly in this case.

*shrugs* After Duke Nukem 2, I've basically adopted the practice of waiting at least 1 month after the game actually launches before getting it. Even then, I'ld watch at least 10 minutes of a Let's Play video to make sure it will be a game that will truly I enjoy playing.

Yeah, they're most likely pressured to doing so, which is a way to hook fans. But the problem is when it's done too early, which sets too many expectations. So release date comes and goes and everyone is saying, "Where's my game?" After a bit of that, and people are let down which reflects badly on the devs because they had set a date they couldn't meet. NMS is a highly ambitious game, but also what's ironic is how little we really know of it. Devs keep talking about it and hyping it up, but it's a lot of wind at this point, without actually saying much about the game. On the flipside though, maybe there really isn't much to talk about as there really isn't all that much to the game, which would be curious. Either way, they've set a lot of expectations and they likely won't be able to meet them as the hype train is almost out of control and many will feel likely terribly disappointed upon release.

game just went Gold
