No Man's Sky

More in vein of PR fluff rather than independent review, but as we approach release day gives more of an overview:

Probably the game I've been most looking forward to (apart from MW2 Remastered) but still vacillating on whether to buy and will probably await reviews to get some sense of critical overview. Though I do have concerns over 'independence' of some review sites/publications that seem to rely heavily on keeping in with games publishers.

Especially important because back to work in Sept and know won't have much time for gaming so hours spent vs quality/pleasure ratio is very important.

This is easy enough to address: use review aggregators, look at multiple reviews from different sources, and see what actual player reviews say. You should be able to form a solid opinion of whether it's a game you'd like with an hour or so of research.

The PS4 version is reportedly around 6GB on disc. PC version should be similar, but keep in mind they're gonna be patching like crazy for a while--and some of those patches could be quite large.

Picked it up an hour or so ago. First impression: pretty fucking amazing.

Unfortunately I've started out on a somewhat less hospitable world, but it seems like there's a good chunk of land to explore on just this world. Ship not fixed. Found new life and new civilization. Some kind of warrior race and I've translated one word of their language: interloper.
Fought a few drones, mined a lot of stuff. Got caught in the acid rain. Good times.

hint for faster movement that'll save you a lot of time planetside:

when you're sprinting, hit R1 for melee, and then rapidly hit and hold X for a nice boost

Wait...you can sprint? Now you tell me! :)

I spent an hour walking around one planet, and I mean "walking". VERY immersive. No regrets though, it was like walking around a semi-Lovecraftian version of Mars. I walked through several caves with gems and stuff glowing on the walls, ceiling and floors. This world, which I've named Talos IV (In the Talos system. I love that you can even name the system!), is a cool world whose predominant vegetation is a squid like plant I've named "Squid Plant". How original is that eh?

I saw a ship that looked a little like Serenity, and cost about a million bucks. I gotta get that ship! I managed to take off and fly around the world a bit and was pretty happy that you could do that. Most of the vids just show you getting in your ship and auto flying into space. I got into orbit and flew over the planet and can see either moons or other worlds. Unfortunately, I didn't have the right fuel for hyperspace, so all I could do was hang over this world and had to land to go look for what I needed. All in all a pretty immersive experience where I felt like an astronaut exploring a new world. Ran across various outposts, shelters, a crashed ship, alien temple, have learned 10 words in the local lingo. Looking forward to exploring more.

So SPCTRE, tell me about your first world. What was it like? I may post some short video's in the next day or so.

So, it's a survival game, like Ark...
But in Spaaaaceeee!!! with an added mystery and i read that the "end" of the game where you "solve" that mystery is a bit meh...

welp, it's not really advisable to follow the "story" that much, these games tend be much more focused on you making your own fun/emergent stuff happening to you - I know I'm not going to the center of the galaxy any time soon

definitely avoid if you're not into crafting survival stuff though

I'm interested in it but the one gameplay video I watched looked pretty boring. That's probably because the guy who was playing (one of the developers) seemed like a pretty boring guy and he wasn't really doing much at all.

My laptop isn't that old, yet the gameplay is as if my system was ancient.

My biggest complaint is I move too slow walking. Sprint is tolerable, but I can't sprint forever. I lowered the graphics resolution for everything to low. I think that helped a little. I'm open to other suggestions. Playing on a Toshiba PC laptop, Windows 10.

Oh, another complaint. I can't alt-tab out of the game and then go back into it. When I try to return to the game, it hangs. I hear the sound just fine, but I get no picture. I have to crash the game and then start again.
