No Man's Sky

My laptop isn't that old, yet the gameplay is as if my system was ancient.

My biggest complaint is I move too slow walking. Sprint is tolerable, but I can't sprint forever. I lowered the graphics resolution for everything to low. I think that helped a little. I'm open to other suggestions. Playing on a Toshiba PC laptop, Windows 10.

Oh, another complaint. I can't alt-tab out of the game and then go back into it. When I try to return to the game, it hangs. I hear the sound just fine, but I get no picture. I have to crash the game and then start again.
the game is very taxing on your CPU, no amount of optimization/tweaking will change that basic fact, so you'll continue to have issues with performance even with optimal settings

I played for about 5 hours yesterday......I must admit, I feel a little let down overall by the experience. I've seen some cool stuff in the game so far, but there are a lot of things that quite honestly, ruin the immersive experience for me. undiscovered planets are not really undiscovered....there are outposts and habitats (In pristine condition BTW) all over the place.....you don't really feel like your seeing something no one else has...wasn't this the point of the game? Another gripe is the "Sentinels", these things attack you for mining (obviously something required in the game to survive). It feels like a cheap attempt to shoehorn some action in to satisfy the "pew, pew must shoot or no fun" crowd, or maybe it's a metaphor for the dangers of destroying the environment or something. either way, it's poorly implemented. Have them on some worlds (but they should be rare). Make the environment itself more dangerous, poison plants, animals, make things like plutonium radioactive so if you carry it in your suit for awhile, it starts to hurt you. I dunno, I'm not quite getting the "chill" experience I hoped for. (bear in mind I've only been to 5 planets) Space also seems a little boring, where are the anomalies? Giant Green hands? Space amoebas? and way too populated. The space stations seem a little lame, If you're looking to roam the halls of Deep Space Nine or Babylon 5, you won't find it here. NPC interaction is rather boring and limited, compared to other games I've played. I don't see how it would be hard to generate a few NPC's roaming the station you could babble meaninglessly at just to give the universe some life. Also, My ship, I can't name it? I can't choose it's color? put some decals on it? Plus, the ships are way too small, Most of us who bought the game wanted to be Han Solo, Malcolm Reynolds or James T. Kirk. We wanted our own Serenity or Falcon. I think adding the ability to walk from the cockpit to a little back room in the ship to manage your inventory, craft stuff, or just sleep off that night you had with that green skinned whatsit (no judgments here!) would also add to the immersion. this game is supposed to be the ultimate immersive game, or maybe I was buying into the hype too much. I'm not sure. Still, I fell like there's stuff to build on. so I still support this game overall, I will continue to play, I just don't think it'll be for hours and hours unless there are some changes. It feels like I preordered a book, got the cool looking cover, but the pages are pending. I do feel like I overpaid for the game in it's current form. But hopefully patches and things will improve that.

From what I've read it sounds like a neat indie title that got overhyped to what it actually is. I think the expectations were so sky high that it was bound to be a disappointment especially at a full AAA price point.

Yeah, I was a little confused by that. I haven't played it yet but I watched a video where one of the developers was playing it with some reviewer (or something) so I got some idea what it was like. The developer was going on about how you were the first person to discover the planet and so on, and then he comes across the structures. So the other guy (obviously as confused as I was) is like "so there HAVE been people here in the past". And the developer continued on about how you'd find structures on the planets like factories and whatever, so myself and the other guy were thinking the same thing, that it's some long-lost civilization or something. But then he walks in one of the buildings and there's an alien in there who he starts talking to. Or at least tried because his character didn't understand the language. It's no big deal for me personally. I wasn't dead-set on discovering a planet for the first time or not coming into contact with other NPCs, I was just confused.

My feeling is that there's a very poor balance between ground and space activities. The game is largely based on the ground and that's where you spend most of your play time. Space, with a few exceptions, mostly seem to be something that you're traveling across.

I was hoping the game would have more of a 50-50 balance between ground and space, where there's a lot more interesting stuff like anomalies, space creatures and such.

The Steam Download was only 2.5 GB (much smaller than I expected) I have crappy internet, as I live way out in the country, so that was nice not to have to wait 10+ hours to download it.
Thanks. 2.5 GB is much less than I thought that it would be. Will try to download it next weekend, maybe getting all the current patches.

holy shit this game. this game! I mean, shit.

it has completely destroyed my ability to articulate what I think about it, it's that good.

So SPCTRE, tell me about your first world. What was it like? I may post some short video's in the next day or so.
okay, now that I'm finally done with my first planet (with a little help from the wife, she sure is good at spotting those animals!), I can give you the short rundown. Overall, super lucky parameters for a first planet: Low sentinels, temperate climate, medium fauna (docile)&flora, medium everything basically. Oh, and quite a bit of Emeril to make some easy units early on (bought my first new ship from a trader last night) :techman:

So is there any kind of a story or goal, or are you just wandering from plane to planet exploring and collecting stuff? I don't have a problem either way, I'm just curious because I haven't really seen anything to indicate any kind of story or anything from the trailers and stuff.

I haven't played it but one goal is to get to the center of the galaxy and there's another quest that can be stumbled upon by following clues.

There are 3 "paths":
1. Go to the center of the galaxy.
2. Follow the lead of Atlas, a precurser supercomputer who wants to lead you somewhere.
3. Forget the other 2 and do what you want.

Ah, so I might up the graphics. I'll see if it slows me.

I'm trying to do the melee jump/jetpack trick to move faster. I have mixed results but it does help. Space travel I think is still slower than normal and I have no tricks to speed that. Can't melee/jetpack trick on space stations. I can jetpack or sprint.

I haven't found an Atlas pass yet. I'm in my 2nd star system. On a barren planet that seems to have some nice resources. I think I'm gonna stay here to mine for a while. I've learned that I need to scavenge for derelict ships. Strip those suckers of their goods and make some money. If they have 1 more slot than I have on my ship, I should upgrade. I've read repeatedly that the game will offer you a 50/50 chance the next derelict will have 1 more open storage slot than you currently have. So I can keep upgrading that way.

I'm still stuck with a 5 slot multi-tool. I've not found any larger ones yet.

Found my first ruins. Been to 2 manufacturing facilities. Found an observatory. I think that might have started me on the Atlas path but I still have no Atlas Pass yet. Not met Polo or the other being.

Just be aware that once you choose, your choice is locked for the current game and there is no way to change your mind. So unless you start a brand new game, you are stuck with your choice.
I think you can sorta switch between the 3 of them, but it looks like you need to find Polo's anomaly spacestation to be put back on the Atlas path...
In the galaxy map you can switch between the 3 paths by pressing the L1/R1 buttons...

This guy has some nice videos with tips:

And make sure to get the Atlas pas from the Atlas ''twins", Polo and his buddy...

so I found giant flying eels but with tailfins? they're pretty dope, I wonder what their anti-grav solution is
