All through the RTD years some said Autumn/Winter was a better time of year, better to be stuck in front of the telly on a dark evening than a sunny one. Viewing habits have changed since then though.IMO we seriously need to get back on track schedule wise like RTD's seasons and the first season for Smith
And all for three Sherlocks.
Series 9 publicity kicked into full swing today with the unembargoing of reports from a Press Day that was held back in June. More of that elsewhere but one thing that stood out was Capaldi saying (and not for the first time either) that his time on the series might be shorter rather than longer.
So Specials next year then he and Moffat leave together?
My fear is that Moffat would stay on. He'd see the opportunity to cast another Doctor. He's already matched JNT and cast three -- Smith, Hurt, and Capaldi to JNT's Davison, Baker, and McCoy -- so he could cement his place in Who history by casting a fourth.

I am not surprised by this. There were rumblings that Capaldi considered packing it in after series 8, that he liked being the Doctor but the physical demands of the production were too grueling and demanding for him.
That said, I'd love to see Capaldi and Ingrid Oliver for a season. And maybe add a Rory/Ian type to handle the action sequences.

I'm hoping that they can go to a new producer/showrunner without basically skipping a whole year. Classic Who didn't need most of a year off when a new producer/showrunner came on. Maybe RTD to Moffat was a one time thing, and when Moffat leaves it won't be by doing a year of specials between series? That's what I hope, at least.

American television series handle showrunner changes all the time without needing to take a year off. Even the classic series didn't take a year off when they changed producers.

I know, that's why I'm hoping Doctor Who nowadays can handle it. I guess RTD to Moffat had a few extra things that made the transition harder, but I can easily see Moffat dragging his feet and doing a year of specials (mixed with Sherlock filming when he's not doing Doctor Who specials, of course) just so he gets to do more.
I like the idea of Capaldi and Ingrid Oliver with a male companion to handle the rough stuff (though I'd be more inclined to go for a Jamie, or even a male version of Leela)
The 2009 "gap year" had nothing to do with RTD's departure or transitioning to Moffat. RTD just felt the show should take a break after four years, and he has said that had he stayed on indefinitely, the show would have continued to take a break after every four years. So whenever Moffat leaves, there won't necessarily be a break to handle the transition or anything like that.

Mentioning Leela, for that matter, why would it need to be a male companion to handle the action bits? Why not have 2 female companions and have one of them be more action oriented? Like, they could bring back Journey Blue from "Into the Dalek" or create a similar character.
Will we be looking back in a few months and realising that Moffat was dropping a massive hint?

Also, I remember a recent interview with DWM where Moffat said that the BBC would totally jump at the chance to do a Paternoster Gang spin-off but that he's just not really that interested in it. I say, if he doesn't want to do it, he should still let the BBC find someone else to do it.
Took me about thirty seconds to realise you weren't suggesting Capaldi was going to be the next showrunner
I must be getting old...
