No full series in 2016?

Fully in the realm of unverified rumour at the moment but allegedly there will be news coming from the BBC on Friday afternoon regarding future plans. (The good thing is true or false we'll know either way reasonably quickly.)

I loved when Doctor Who and Orphan Black were on back to back. If that would happen again I would be excited.

IMO we seriously need to get back on track schedule wise like RTD's seasons and the first season for Smith
All through the RTD years some said Autumn/Winter was a better time of year, better to be stuck in front of the telly on a dark evening than a sunny one. Viewing habits have changed since then though.

And all for three Sherlocks.

When I first read the rumour the suggestion was they'd bank a few years worth, to solve the problem for a while.

Series 9 publicity kicked into full swing today with the unembargoing of reports from a Press Day that was held back in June. More of that elsewhere but one thing that stood out was Capaldi saying (and not for the first time either) that his time on the series might be shorter rather than longer.

So Specials next year then he and Moffat leave together?

I am not surprised by this. There were rumblings that Capaldi considered packing it in after series 8, that he liked being the Doctor but the physical demands of the production were too grueling and demanding for him.

That said, I'd love to see Capaldi and Ingrid Oliver for a season. And maybe add a Rory/Ian type to handle the action sequences.

My fear is that Moffat would stay on. He'd see the opportunity to cast another Doctor. He's already matched JNT and cast three -- Smith, Hurt, and Capaldi to JNT's Davison, Baker, and McCoy -- so he could cement his place in Who history by casting a fourth.

Who will in all probability be the first female Doctor.

Yeah, I can see him staying just so he can go, "How can you call me sexist now!?"

I'm hoping that they can go to a new producer/showrunner without basically skipping a whole year. Classic Who didn't need most of a year off when a new producer/showrunner came on. Maybe RTD to Moffat was a one time thing, and when Moffat leaves it won't be by doing a year of specials between series? That's what I hope, at least.

I would like to think we'll be getting three years at least out of Capaldi. Although it's not surprising that the work has taken it's toll on him. I did find it funny though that he was lagging behind in the corridor running in Time Heist where past Doctors have lead the pack in running, John Barrowman had a had time keeping with Tennant in Utopia.

Well I suppose if nothing else we'll have more Capaldi episodes than Eccleston ones (actually even before S9 starts we already have). Hopefully he'll do something beyond S9, even if it is just a few specials. I like the idea of Capaldi and Ingrid Oliver with a male companion to handle the rough stuff (though I'd be more inclined to go for a Jamie, or even a male version of Leela)

I can see Moffat leaving with Capaldi, and I can certainly see the BBC wanting to try someone new...maybe?

American television series handle showrunner changes all the time without needing to take a year off. Even the classic series didn't take a year off when they changed producers.

I know, that's why I'm hoping Doctor Who nowadays can handle it. I guess RTD to Moffat had a few extra things that made the transition harder, but I can easily see Moffat dragging his feet and doing a year of specials (mixed with Sherlock filming when he's not doing Doctor Who specials, of course) just so he gets to do more.

Imagine there's 8 predatory scumbags who want your job Kirk.

Are you going to be a gentleman about it, or are you going to start digging graves?

The 2009 "gap year" had nothing to do with RTD's departure or transitioning to Moffat. RTD just felt the show should take a break after four years, and he has said that had he stayed on indefinitely, the show would have continued to take a break after every four years. So whenever Moffat leaves, there won't necessarily be a break to handle the transition or anything like that.

Mentioning Leela, for that matter, why would it need to be a male companion to handle the action bits? Why not have 2 female companions and have one of them be more action oriented? Like, they could bring back Journey Blue from "Into the Dalek" or create a similar character.

I suppose I could understand Capaldi having difficulty with the physical grind of a regular Doctor Who schedule. But still, he's been my favorite of all of the new series Doctors. The idea of him leaving any time soon makes me :( .

Meanwhile, I can understand Moffat not wanting to leave the show. However, if he can't handle Doctor Who on top of his Sherlock duties, then he needs to at least be able to farm out some of his Doctor Who duties to Chibnall or someone else. After all, RTD was able to do full seasons of Doctor Who, Torchwood, & The Sarah Jane Adventures simultaneously. And while I like Moffat's writing better than Davies', I gotta respect the consistency & volume of Davies' output.

Also, I remember a recent interview with DWM where Moffat said that the BBC would totally jump at the chance to do a Paternoster Gang spin-off but that he's just not really that interested in it. I say, if he doesn't want to do it, he should still let the BBC find someone else to do it.

Well, that makes me glad RTD left, at least. A "break" every four years is just ridiculous. At least knowing that now gives me hope that we won't be skipping a year's series when Mofat leaves (if he ever leaves :shifty: ).

I'm very disappointed in myself, there is of course no reason that couldn't happen :)

Will we be looking back in a few months and realising that Moffat was dropping a massive hint?

Took me about thirty seconds to realise you weren't suggesting Capaldi was going to be the next showrunner :guffaw:

I must be getting old...

I totally agree with this. I love the Paternoster Gang, and I'd like to see them regularly. They definitely deserve a spin off, and I can see it being awesome. If nothing else, it would have to be written by Michael Bay or something to be worse than Torchwood .

It'd be CBBC, and start with Vastra saying "I feel like eating a child today, Strax go outside and find me the worst behaved child on the street, who none will miss."
