Nintendo's Problem

my point is simply, nintendo is behind the times, because they chose to sit out (even after providing hardware). Nintendo felt that rather than spend time/resources on online gaming, they should spend it on GBA/GC connectivity.

true the original xbox live didnt have an online store. granted xbox live did get a heck of a lot right out of the gate, and as a service, it has grown and evolved an amazing amount. they did have some sort of DLC plan in place for Live on the original xbox, i cant remember when they started charging for it though. but once you have free DLC in place, it's not a big step to start charging for it.

One of my favorite games for my GameCube is Super Mario Sunshine. I'm 31 years old.
While I have a number of more mature titles:

Dead to Rights
F-Zero FX
Metroid Prime
NFS: Underground & Underground 2
Soul Calibur 2

I have more fun with the Mario titles (I wish GC had a better Donkey Kong title).

but once you have free DLC in place, it's not a big step to start charging for it.
The Wii's small storage capacity is a blessing in disguise in this area, it means minimal amounts of nickel and diming for features that should of have been included with the actual game (RE:5 anyone?). Unfortunately it also means no patches for online games. Project Cafe is sure to remedy that but again, nickel and diming.

Nintendo's advantage in waiting until now to release an HD version of the Wii is two-fold: 1) they get to further refine the motion control hardware, and 2) it's far, far cheaper to release a PS3/Xbox 360-spec console now than it was 5 years ago, and Nintendo doesn't have the development costs either one of those did. Look at how old the 3DS architecture actually is compared to the cutting-edge stuff that's out now:

3DS: 128 MB RAM, 133+ MHz processor, 2GB internal flash storage, 0.3 MP cameras, Wireless b/g.
iPod Touch: 256 MB RAM, 800 MHz processor, 8/32/64 GB solid state drive storage, 5 MP camera w/ 720p recording capability, Wireless b/g/n.

Now, the 3DS does have the expensive autostereoscopic screens, but everything else barely matches the first iPod Touch. And Nintendo is using the thing to basically print money. An HD Wii would probably have a similar cost advantage over the 360 and PS3 since it would match them and yet have a much larger profit margin now.
