Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

I feel that Nintendo needs to start making really attractive launch games again. My first console the Snes had Super Mario World, Pilot Wings, F-zero. I never bothered with a consol after the SNES until PS2 and then a xbox360. But games to the xbox and PS can usually be bought for the PC. So I really want a Nintendo again because I feel they still have that "console" -feeling but my god I haven't seen any good titles for either the WII-U or the switch. They need to shape up. As I said I want to get the Switch but not right now.

There are good games out there for the Wii U. But they are mainly first party titles, and are sparse.

The Wii U is effectively dead (manufacturing ended several months ago and retailers stopped receiving inventory back in ... November, I think), so don't hold your breath on that front. Breath of the Wild is basically the Wii U's last gasp.

They need to shape up.

I think it's hard to judge it when it's still really early. That said, I think what would really help would be 3rd party exclusives. I don't mean timed exclusives, which are usually pretty crappy for the consumer, but games that are designed to explicitly take advantage of the system and not available anywhere else, like Boom Blox was on the original Wii. I think it was a lot more common in the NES era to have console exclusives.

Well it's not so hard to judge the release titles.

While I never had it, I remember seeing "only on" on a lot of N64 titles. Clearly something the Switch need. And seriously they need a new Mario game that is genuinly good, like Super Mario World

I thought Super Mario Galaxy was incredible, just since then Nintendo seems more into nostalgia titles. I want to see more star games with playground levels in the 64/Galaxy vein.

There's a Fire Emblem game coming up for Switch and a new system implies a new Mario and a new Mario Kart at the very least. I'm hoping they go back to being more adventurous with Mario titles and don't just keep doing "It's like the early Mario games, except in 3d! Need more, here's a bunch of collectibles uncreatively hidden and you need to get 100% of them to unlock the best content."

I agree there's surprisingly little hype around Switch going around near release, for what seems to be the achieved holy grail of a perfectly seamless transition between handheld and console style gaming.

They revealed their new Mario game a month ago and it's in the 64/Galaxy vein. It looks fantastic.

Nice. Didn't see any stars in that video so I wonder what the objective is, or if it's 'stages' but with fully 3d 64/Galaxy-like controls.

Well sure, but I don't really think it's indicative of much at the moment. On the surface it might seem like it, but even the N64 had a light launch lineup, I believe. For the Wii U, it was much more of a factor because they never really ended up attracting enough developers. We need to wait and see if they'll have more developers working on titles. I'd say, give it a year, and if nothing changes much by then, then yes, I'd be a bit more concerned.

My predictions:
1st Year: We'll mostly see lots of ports, including the tablet-only games that can't be used in TV mode. Having ports in a console's first year is normal as a console era undergoes a transition into the next.
2nd Year: Unique titles, including exclusives to the system, fully taking advantage of it. Will likely see more developers release titles they were working on that weren't ready for its first year. I think this is when the console will become a bit more interesting.

Zelda looks great but the lack of other really good games has made me decide to wait things out and see how the situation develop. So far the games lineup (including what is to come) compares unfavorably with the last Nintendo console I owned - the GameCube.

^ I saw a video about that yesterday and you know what, it makes me want to lick a cartridge now

I thought Nintendo said they weren't going to do this?

What's the point in a dual docked/portable console if you're going to make games that only work in one mode?

Because despite Nintendo's claims to the contrary last year, the Switch is absolutely intended to replace both the Wii U and the 3DS.

True, but I don't see any way for any existing 3DS game to get ported to it, if only due to the radical screen format differences.

The touchscreen has also never been the killer feature on the DS/3DS Nintendo wished it was. Short of a few games where it's essential (mostly rhythm games, I guess), one can usually get by without it.

I suppose I could see a small number of games which require the touchscreen but they'd have to be outliers. Even games that need the touchscreen on the 3DS today are the exception.

Yeah, there's at least one tablet-only game on the list, with many more likely to come. Those will be easy to port, so it will likely be a bit like the deluge of titles on the WiiU. That's one way they'll be able to claim lots of titles.

Now, this particular game is rhythm game Voez:

The curious thing is that Nintendo really hasn't talked much about the touchscreen, and it's probably to avoid controversy of such titles making their way over to it. But I'm rather surprised Nintendo has allowed this to happen, as it could undermine the concept of the Switch itself.
