Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

@Robert Maxwell That's not entirely the case with the Vita. I've found some good games for it. I think the pricing for their proprietary memory cards to be more of a killer there. It's a solid little system.

Agreed on the convincing price point. Too high, and it won't sell well.

You're preaching to the choir. I have a Vita and like it a lot. But clearly something turned people off from it--price, market saturation, poor library (I tend to think it's the latter as much as anything).

It has a good library now, but if you look at what came out for it early on, it's easy to see why it didn't impress.

Fair point. Sony didn't do a good enough job with it then. And trying to find sales on memory cards made it that much worse.

Yeah, I sprang for the 64GB card, but Sony's prices are highway robbery.

Nice. Yea they are. I ended up lucking out with some of mine, but sadly they were due to them being on clearance :(. So now I only have Gamestop left and the timing of their sales usually sucks.

Here's the thing, I don't care about power (too much). I know if you say that in certain circles you're labeled a Nintendrone or whatever term the haters like to use, but I don't care (not that you guys are like that though).

I was thinking on this, and this isn't the first time a Nintendo system was only slightly more powerful than it's predecessor. The Wii was just a Gamecube with motion controls, and that thing did just fine. I already have a list of wants for the system and they're primarily first party releases, with the exception of Stardew Valley, I really like the look of that game.

I just gotta wonder, why do peopl want Nintendo to replicate the PS4 or Xbone? What will they achieve by doing that? People who want powerful machines already have those, are they really going to drop another 400 (at minimum) dollars on a Nintendo console that runs exactly the same? If Nintendo wanted to do that they would have, but they know they can't really compete at this stage, so they're going for innovation, which I say more power to them. The WiiU didn't work out, but that doesn't automatically mean the Switch won't be a hit.
I dunno sounds like something a Nintendrone would say

I think some people would like the Nintendo to be powerful enough that they wouldn't have to need two consoles to enjoy Nintendo first-party content as well as third-party software. A parent forking out $300 for a Wii U might not be too agreeable when the kid also wants an X1 to play outside the limited Nintendo ecosystem.

Yep. Exactly. And understandable given the price, along with the economy. So they end up having to choose between the consoles.

I'm fine with the Wii U, and I'm glad I was able to get a PS3. But most likely I won't get a PS4, given that it can run into power issues. It may be more powerful, but I like systems that are built better. It's an investment. Right now it's wait and see time with the Switch and hoping it'll work out.

My newest brick console is a Wii (no U).

I'm either gaming on my PC(s), or my 3DS/Vita.
Which one? The earlier model (backwards compatible with Gamecube games) or the later one? I still have my earlier one and I love it.

Ah. I'm doing that as of late too. Been gaming a bit on my Wii U lately though. Just got Fire Emblem and Super Mario Advance 4 on it.

The earlier one with GC compatibility. I actually didn't know they dropped that later. Sad!

(My son still has a perfectly-functional GameCube, too. I also have a PS2 which I use mainly for DDR.)

They dropped online functionality too on the Wii revision. Not that it was really functional in the first place ;)

Fair points. I actually bought a 360 after getting a Wii for similar reasons. So I can see why others would like Nintendo to be able to offer them the best of both worlds.

Still, for me personally, the Switch is going to be my primary gaming console. I still have my 360 so I can game online with my girlfriend, and she's not interested in upgrading so I don't have to worry about that. And if she does get a new console she's already decided she wants a Switch, so if the online there is decent, we'll have another way to play online again.

Yea it is. I never had a chance to have a GameCube so it's nice to have a system that I can use in part for that reason.

Sweet! I do too. Lucked out and got some more games for it down the line as well. Solid system. Grabbed a couple of other PS2's and refurbed them enough to use as well, just in case.

That'll be me as well most likely. I haven't run into any serious issues with their consoles over the years. As long as the build quality is good, that's what matters to me the most there. One of the few times Sony had it (at least in part) was with the PS2 and with the Vita. Those two systems are really sturdy.

My last console is a lunchbox. (Gamecube) I was fine with it. Then the 3DS actually became awesome and I bought one. I have no need for a $500 console (with consolers and $60 games) to go around and shoot fake people.

And the PS2 being sturdy is laughable. Sony was sued, and lost, for knowing making a piece plastic so the system would break and you would have to buy a new system. The first few years countless systems failed, I'd say on the level of the ring of death.

Well by comparison to the PS4 (people have run into power supply issues and overheating), I haven't run into any big issues with it. Mine's an old 1st gen PS2. Only issue I ran into was with the DVD drive and I just haven't played any since then. But it sucks that they did that. It sounds like they did it with the newer PS3's making them so they break down faster. And it was that. With some of the slimline ones from 2005. Nothing like Sony cheapening up.

The original Playstation was terrible with skipping disc players. I remember they started checking serial numbers at the stores because so many people were buying them, swapping and returning. I eventually got the RROD on my 360 Elite which was at least if not more infamous.

The Atari 5200 joysticks would literally fall apart at a time when my poor young self couldn't afford to get replacements. The launch Dreamcasts had a lot of faulty drives but they had good decency to do it out of the box so you could exchange it.

I learned the hard way when your PC goes it isn't always easy to find a replacement motherboard for some reason. It was more cost effective to just build out a new system.

Bringing it back around to Nintendo. The biggest issue I had is I had one made in November of some year because the disc open button was sucked. Oddly it corrected itself after a year. :)

^ True, I don't think any of my Nintendos have ever died but I don't think I ever used them as often as my other consoles. I bought my nephew his first game console when he was a little boy: a used gamecube. He loved that thing but apparently went through them like candy but at the time they were $20 at Gamestop and his grandpa (who lives closer than me) would go get new ones as needed. I don't know what he was doing to them or if it was because they were used but it was kind of funny. I think they bought at least 5 of them but I'm not sure on the final count.

Almost obligatory when talking about the durability of Nintendo products: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Game_boy_damaged_in_the_gulf_war.JPG

I still have the Nintendo I got back in 1991-2 for Christmas. last I knew it still worked, just need to show it some loving. Yes I know blowing into it is bad... but it works!
