Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

It is, isn't it? I pictured it being much thicker. I guess that explains the needs for the vent. They've packed it tight.

Yeah, the Wii U shows that Nintendo can't survive with just the Nintendo diehards like me. Nintendo is pushing into the mobile space with Miitomo, Pokemon Go, and soon Super Mario Run to reach non-gamers. bringing Nintendo franchises to Universal Theme Parks to reach kids, and the upcoming feature films to reach mainstream audiences. They're doing everything that they can to expand their base. The Nintendo of 10 years ago never would have never shown their new console off on a late night talk show.

It seems to me they took the failure of the Wii U to heart--especially the fact that its launch marketing was so bad (given that tons of people didn't even know it was a new console)--and they're trying to reproduce the success of the Wii.

While I doubt this will sell a bajillion units like the Wii did, a more astute marketing push can only help.

I like how here everyone is civil. I got into an argument with gaming freaks when they went "Nintendo is too different" and I went "Sony and MS have the exact same platforms, and almost the exact same games". Nintendo has the games everyone on the face of the Earth knows, while these people are arguing about Uncharted being Sony's Zelda. Like really? Nintendo has the gaming mascots, and the god of gaming himself still making games. If they can get third party support, or even if they don't, JUST SHOW THE SYSTEM MORE, they will be printing money. I have seen more of the Switch on The Tonight Show bit then I have ever seen the Wii U. I have never even seen a commercial for the system, and when it came out I actually had cable.

Well, the rather significant management shakeup that happened earlier this year certainly put Reggie Fils-Aime on notice that he's being watched very closely and is on shaky ground (although I really blame Satoru Iwata for the botch of the Wii U, he's dead, so it's not like the home office is going to piss on his grave).

Nintendo's still facing an uphill battle, though, considering that there's still so much of the Switch that's unknown, the company's still reliant on its cutesy naming schemes ("JoyCon" controllers? Come the fuck on), and I'm not at all convinced by the company's industrial engineering efforts over the past decade or so that they know what they're doing when it comes to hardware.

Of course, I'm not sure that the company has a lot of direction in general, considering leadership is now pointing fingers everywhere at Pokemon-related revenue cratering for the third time in 15 years -- Hey, Nintendo, you promoted the guy who ran the Pokemon Company to run all of Nintendo and of course he put a whole shit-ton of chips on Pokemon, what the fuck did you think was going to happen?

That's interesting. So at least Nintendo is trying to course correct and realizes there past mess ups. Reading other parts of the web, some people would have you think that Nintendo is just this oblivious company that doesn't realize they're messing up.

Yeah, I've ben spending my time on the Gamefaqs message boards. Between people looking down on your for only playing Nintendo or the blatant Trolls who are just trying to stir shit up, it's really hard to have anything close to resembling civil conversations.

What's wrong with the JoyCon name? You seem to want Nintendo to market the Switch as a serious piece of technology, but that's not Nintendo. They made toys 100 years ago and they make toys today. The Nintendo Switch is a toy. The cutesy JoyCon name is a great name for a toy.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. No direction for the company? The Switch is Nintendo's direction. Pokemon-related revenue cratering? Pokemon Go is a huge success.

Pokemon Go has lost almost 70 percent of its users post-launch.
Which is pretty good for a mobile game. Pokemon Go was a worldwide phenomenon and everyone wanted to check it out. Of course the userbase was going to decline after the initial hype wore off. It's the same reason that Rogue One is going to make a whole lot less money than The Force Awakens, but that doesn't mean Rogue One is going to be considered a failure if it only grosses one billion.

Not to mention that the launch of Pokemon Go pumped up 3DS sales and has probably led to Sun/Moon being the most pre-ordered game in their history.

Between the initial troubles for the 3DS (which they managed to overcome to some success) and the Wii U (which they didn't), Nintendo knows they needed to refocus. The top execs (Iwata included) knew this and set up everything we're starting to see. The mobile stuff is their way to promote their IP to people who otherwise might not care. Pokemon Go was a good example of that even though it isn't part of Nintendo's main mobile focus with Miitomo earlier this year and Super Mario Run next week. And now, we're about a month out from getting all the details on what they've learned from the 3DS and Wii U for their core console business.

Switch event on January 12th/13th now has a time:
(Thursday)
January 12, 8 pm PT (NA West coast)
January 12, 11 pm ET (NA East coast)

(Friday)
January 13, 4 am GMT
January 13, 5 am CET (Central Europe)
January 13, 1 pm JST (Japan)
January 13, 3 pm AEDT (Australia)

Also, another game for the pile - Yooka-Laylee is coming to the Switch with more details coming early 2017 (probably at or immediately after the aforementioned Switch event). But the game has also been cancelled for the Wii U because of "unforeseen technical issues".

 Yeah, pretty much. I haven't been following that game closely, but from what I understand, the main developers were working on the Wii U version themselves while the other console versions were being handled by another studio. A bit of a tricky situation though since a lot of people backed it on the Wii U specifically. They are letting people switch (ha) to another version or maybe ask for a refund.

FYI, the Switch is going on a North American road trip after the January 12th presentation. Haven't heard anything about other regions.
