Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

There are people who lose their shit if they aren't pulling at least 60fps at all times.

I guarantee you those people are not Nintendo's target demo here.

Thank you, I've been over at the Gamefaqs discussion boards and it just depresses me how angry people get towards Nintendo. Or any game company that isn't the one they support.

Welcome to 2016. I haven't owned a console since Gamecube. I have a 3DS and I just ignore 100% of any online bullshit. You say one bad thing about any console and everyone else attacks you. To me the PS4 and Xbox are the same damn thing with 98% of the same games. People have a fit! It's like every day is election day.

Yep. And they're those who think that everyone should have an HDTV by now or a 4K one. Thing is, not everyone wants or needs to get one. They're fine with the tvs they have. Same with graphics. Not everyone cares that much for them.

I will actually be surprised if the Switch supports 480i, given that the PS4 and Xbone do not.

I have a box TV that can't play anything. I'd love to get a new TV and Blu-rays because they are cheaper than DVDs now. But I don't see the point. The graphics all look the same to me, the human eye isn't really that great and shouldn't stare at a screen for hours anyways.

Word. That's me too! I have a PS3, Wii, Wii U and a PS2 that work fine on mine. Exactly. Once my tv is on its last legs I'll upgrade, but I don't see the need to.

I'm cautiously optimistic for the Switch. On the one hand, it is a splendid idea in that console and portable gaming, at least for Nintendo, are going to be married into the one concept. But there are a lot of unanswered questions which could undo the brilliance of the innovation such as battery life, hardware performance and, most importantly, whether they will finally introduce a universal store for digital purchases such as virtual console.

Please let this be as amazing as it sounds, Nintendo. I want it.

  • Battery life -- Expect it to be low, in the 3-5 hour range. Nintendo is not going to have achieved any major breakthroughs here.
  • Performance -- Expect last gen specs, maybe a bit better. It is a portable, after all.
  • Universal store -- They've already worked toward consolidating their online stores, but the Virtual Console is a special section of the store, it will never "be" the store.

Yes, the specs are likely to be behind current generation consoles. This makes me think that the remastered version of Skyrim won't be on Switch. It is rumoured that the Switch will consist of 4GB of RAM. Of course, 1GB will be used by the system itself which leaves very little for games.

For me it's less an obsession but more a curiosity. If you look at how the PS4 Pro has been pitched, the gaming market is obsessed with performance and power when it comes to consoles. I'm glad Nintendo still have a place in the market, but it's also something of a mystery given the focus of graphical performance.

Why would Skyrim be shown in the ONLY video we have if we aren't going to get it? I mean that makes zero sense. Plus it's rumored to be a launch title with Mario and Splaton.

Nintendo isn't going after "the gaming market." They are going after the same people they always do: kids and families. People who aren't chasing the hottest technology and don't know what "FPS" stands for, but who just want some fun games to play.

We are getting Skyrim. But I question which version we're getting. I doubt it's the recently remastered version, I have a feeling it will be a port of the older version.

Regarding the Virtual Console stuff, it would be nice if they would recognize that you already have (for example) Super Mario World on the Wii U and just give you a license for it on the Switch, but considering they don't do that between the Wii U and 3DS right now... it's probably not likely. Going forward, that might not be an issue if they just keep the system architecture for the Switch so everything you bought on Switch 1 still works on Switch 4 (or whatever), but we'll see.

New pair of reports:

1. The dock increases performance by including a bit more cooling/airflow and not needing to rely on a battery since it would be plugged in. So there's no extra processing power in the dock, it just allows the main Switch unit to use it's full power without worrying about overheating or battery life. Also connects to the dock via USB-C. They may sell the docks separately later on so you could put one next to every TV in your house and move the Switch between them at will.

2. Dark Souls 3 is running on the Switch and From Software is happy with the level of performance. They are considering releasing all 3 Dark Souls games with all DLC included.
