Re: Rangers

I personally have enjoyed revisiting B5 with all of you and hope to continue. I'm cool with the current pace and have been able to keep up for the most part. I could certainly watch more per week if that's what is decided.

Re: Rangers

I'm getting close to catching up again. Am now (or ehm in the course of the week) starting on the last 3 ... so, about there.

Re:

"Soul Mates" is an average episode. I like the Londo as King Lear bit. His wives are great--a bit too stereotypical in their characteristics, but they probably have to be in order to make the point the episode makes though Londo's choice. Londo's enjoyment in telling his wives that only one will remain in the money was great. The Londo/G'Kar moments in this episode also make it a memorable one--the "boots" scene at Londo's ceremony, for example, is very funny. Gotta love G'Kar's efforts to antagonize Londo, and Londo's refusal to react the way G'Kar wants him to.

The whole Talia storyline was tiresome. Psicorp is big and bad and is positioning itself for a more powerful role. We get it. Is it just me, or does it seem Talia is afraid of the corp? I really feel the actress who plays Talia does a poor job of acting. This episode would have been better with more Londo and G'Kar and less Talia.

Re:

After losing a long post, I'm going to start posting my episode reviews/thoughts separately.

"A Race Through Dark Places" is an above average episode. I love Bester--Koenig is great, far better than he ever was on Star Trek. By the way, I just noticed that Kosh hasn't been seen or heard from in a while. He's such an important character that I'm surprised JMS didn't give him more to do in the first season and a half.

We get Bester yet again hunting some rogue telepaths who happen to take refuge on B5, this time with the aid of Dr. Franklin. Big surprise at first, but seeing as how Franklin has shown he will do whatever it takes if he believes what he is doing is right and just, it isn't too big a shock.

Ivanova cracks me up. Her bit with Sheridan about his snoring was great. I think she says something along the lines of, "Either you were snoring or there was one hell of a hull breach."

The resolution with Bester being tricked by the collective power of the telepaths was well done--very original. Good stuff.

Re:

"The Coming of Shadows" is an excellent episode. It's so tragic to watch Londo go down the path he is walking all the while knowing that the current emperor could be the one to bring peace between the Centauri and the Narn. Of course the emperor dies and Londo orders another attack on the Narn people just as G'Kar buys him a drink in hopes of a new understanding and peace. It's hard to watch G'Kar get so excited about the possibility of peace knowing that he will soon learn of the attack.

Sheridan does his best to help the Narn, but can't really take a side as the Narn and the Centauri are sure to go to war. Great G'Kar episode--powerful acting.

Garibaldi and Delenn get messages from Sinclair explaining the new army--the Rangers--he's building for the upcoming war. It's good to know Sinclair is still out there.

Start to finish this episode really works: well crafted and important story, plot twists, and excellent acting.

Re:

2 of this week's 3...

SOUL MATES

This episode was alright! I liked the idea of seeing the three wives, and that it’s because Londo surprises them all with “I’m getting rid of 2 of you, haha!” I liked all three wives and the actresses who played them. I’d definitely like to have more than one in the bedroom too :D

Best lines:
Wife1: Where have you been?
Londo: Affairs of state, my dear.
Wife1: State of inebriation, I’d wager!

And as the wives fight amongst themselves, Londo interrupts with, “Ladies, ladies, ladies..... Continue.” Haha!

I am finding that in many Babylon 5 episodes, the switch from one scene to another is very fast, the editing is very abrupt. This was very noticeable in this episode when Talia explains when no one in authority @ Psi Corps wanted to talk about how Matt Stoner left the Corps. BTW does anyone else sometimes get confused when they talk about “the Corps”? I am thinking they are saying “The Core”, like the core planets. Maybe I’ve immersed myself too much in the Firefly universe, eh? :)

When Matt Stoner is informing Garibaldi of the legitimacy of his Centauri item, there is quite the impressive tower of goods behind him. It’s made up merely of pop-top storable containers that you can find at any department store! I have a set in the kitchen myself, not exactly impressive items!

I liked that inside Garibaldi’s quarters, he has up a picture of Daffy Duck, relating back to the 1st season episode where he was watching Duck Dodgers on tv. I thought it odd that Talia would come to Garibaldi and inform him of her leaving, ir just didn’t feel like something she would do.

When Dr. Franklin said that Londo needed a blood transfusion, I figured that it would come from G’Kar, especially how the episode was highlighting that Londo actually gives G’Kar physical headaches. I’m glad they didn’t do this, where one of two people who don’t like each other must give his blood to save the other.

Some Trek connections – episode was written by Peter David, who has written many Trek novels; and the episode featured Carel Struycken, who of course played Mr. Homn.

A RACE THROUGH DARK PLACES

Someone is smuggling unregistered telepaths through Babylon 5. Bester needs to find out who. And Delenn wants to be more human.

It was nice to see Bester again, I like it when he’s on the show. The other Psi cop at the beginning, however, sure didn’t look like a Psi cop. I mean, she looked like she was instead Bester’s neighbour who makes cookies for her husband and 3 kids. Delenn – looks like she’s picked up some human female traits already, like flirting and pretending to not be interestedthen playing coy about it. Don’t deny it! You know exactly what you’re doing! Tease.

Another one of those Babylon 5 quick-edits-to-the-next-scene, this time it cuts of unusually quickly right after Sheridan’s been locked out of his quarters, and they cut to the telepaths putting their guns together.

Garibaldi, the head of station security, makes yet another boneheaded move. “Hey Bester, I know where your guys are. Here, have the locations. But don’t go anywhere, we’ll come get you in an hour first and then we’ll go down together. You won’t go by yourself before you’re ready, will you? No, I didn’t think so. I could just come get you in an hour and not tell you the location first, but I trust you. It’s not a trap or anything, don’t worry, I’m not smart enough to set something up like that.” I like Garibaldi, I really do! But these ways of moving the plot ahead just make him seem like a complete imbecile.

Dr. Franklin. Yes, we know you’re involved somehow with your “trust me” comment to Sheridan. But the HEAD of it? Unlikely. Ok, you explained it away regarding the ethical treatment of telepaths, and retconned it with the underground clinic from a number of episodes ago. But what need was there to out yourself to Sheridan? One of the other telepaths could have easily said he was the leader and not have blown your cover. There was no need to reveal your identity at this time. Maybe Richard Biggs had complained about putting him in that awful "relationship" a couple episodes ago so he was written in here to make up for it. I felt his involvement was completely unnecessary.

I really did enjoy the climax when Talia seems to be on the telepaths’ side, then Bester’s, then we realize what really happened. The telepaths then warn Sheridan to not be near Bester or he’ll figure it out. Why didn’t they just send him away first then, so that he wasn’t aware? They could have just said “We’ll take care of it in a non-violent way, and then we’ll leave the station peacefully. Don’t worry.” Then they wouldn’t have to worry about this secret being left with Sheridan, who no doubt will run into Bester again someday.

Overall a very enjoyable episode!

Re:

Well I just watched Soul Mates and while I didn't care much for the Matt Stoner plot, I actually really enjoyed the story about Londo and his three wives. The whole thing was just hilarious. :D

Re: Bab 5

I just ripped through Season 2.

I learned one thing about this series. Watching Babylon 5 is like eating potato chips. You can't eat (or in B5's case, watch) just one.

It's interesting to see Sheridan take over. Contrasting from Sinclair, who was the preferred choice of the Minbari, to an EarthForce officer that's responsible for destroying one of their warships, the command dynamic seemed very interesting. Then we find out that EarthForce General Hague planted him on B5 in what's essentially, an effort to control vital posts, due to the growing suspicion that Clark was involved in Santiago's assasination.

I also liked how Delenn was starting to be treated like an outcast, due to her change. She believes that it was a necessary move, yet her own people consider her an outcast, so much so that she's expelled from the Grey Council, which now stands unbalanced.

Londo and G'Kar...this was the meat of the season for me. The ongoing war had posed stakes for both characters, ending with G'Kar basically being a wanted man after the Centari glassed the Narn Homeworld. I liked Londo in the beginning, and now, it's quite evident that his decisons are now catching up to him. Even though he says he has no choice but to continue, Vir tries to remind him that he always has a choice, and that makes Londo a most tragic character to me.

And the Shadows...can't wait to see how that turns out.

(I'm trying to make myself intentionally dumb with respect to this series, so I can get swept away in the narrative...)

I can't wait to borrow the rest to finish the story once and for all...

Re: Bab 5

I have some time today so I can get on with some reviews. At last. :D

Soul Mates

"I'm here to pick up some ladies." Gotta love Vir.

The Stoner plot...eh, nothing to write home about. I never found Talia a particularly interesting character and this episode did nothing to change that. It serves as further confirmation of how ruthless PsiCorps is (which is hardly a revelation), but Talia was never going to take up Stoner's offer so the whole thing doesn't achieve much for mine.

The Mollari's Three Wives plot...often hilarious, but nothing extraordinary. Peter David writes some pretty funny dialogue and this is a prime example. The assassination attempt was rather predictable. The choice of which wife to "keep" was less so.

The Delenn's Bad Hair Day plot...has its moments. Looks like the Triluminary didn't cover a few essential details. :D Minbari bathing habits are...interesting. Much more interesting are Delenn's remarks to Garibaldi about groups of souls. Might have been better directed to another character, though...oh, wait a minute... :D

Lennier: "And I marked them (the cards) exactly as you requested." Gotta love that Minbari honesty. :guffaw:

Overall there are plenty of one-liners to make this entertaining, but it's not among my favourites.

Soul Mates

Soul Mates, which was originally called "Pestilence, Famine, and Death" is my favorite non-Arc episode of the series.

It's also one of the last non-Arc episodes for quite a while ... and it provides some much-needed humor and brevity.

It is the 30th anniversary of Londo Mollari's assension, something that is quite a big deal for Centauri males. As a gift from the Emperor, Londo is granted any one wish within the Emperor's ability to grant. Londo has asked for, and received, a divorce from two of his three wives. He must decide which of those three to keep.

Jane Carr plays Timov. (behind the scenes moment - Some time into the shooting, Jane asked Peter David "Do you realize my character's name is Vomit spelled backwards?" ... Peter replied "Well, yes." - He told me that story at Dragon*Con last year) ... She is best known for playing the shrink in "Dear John"

Lois Nettleton plays Daggair. The only thing I remember seeing her in before this is as the waitress in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Blair Valk plays Mariel, and I don't remember seeing her in anything but this.

In the B story, Talia's ex husband Matt Stoner shows up on the station. Supposedly, he has left the Corps. Instead, he's no longer a normal telepath and now has the ability to make people do what he thinks. Matt is played by Keith Szarabajka, who played Holtz on Angel. Holtz is the guy who kidnapped Angel's son Conner and took him to the hell dimension.

Also showing up for a cameo is Carel Struycken (Mr. Holm in ST:TNG) as a merchant.

This was Peter David's first entrance into the Babylon 5 universe, but it was far from his last. In fact, he went on to contribute one other filmed episode for B5, one for Crusade, two comics (In Valen's Name, parts 2 and 3), two novelizations "ThirdSpace" and "In the Beginning", a trilogy of novels "Legions of Fire" also known as the Centauri Prime trilogy, and one unproduced script he co-wrote with Bill Mumy for season 5.

5/5 stars

A Race Through Dark Places

A Race Through Dark Places

Oh, crap. There's a lot going on here with the underground teep railroad, Bester's return, and Talia/Susan ...

While not immediately obvious, an episode coming up later this season will show this episode in a completely different light, and may in fact explain more about what's going on here.

Essentially, Bester shows up on the station trying to track down telepaths who have escaped from the Psi Corps. He is led to believe they've all been killed...

To watch for - His assistant with the "pageboy" haircut is his real-life wife, Judy Levitt. They've worked together a few times including here and in Star Trek Generations.

Not great the first time through. Much better, and creepier, the second time through. 3/5

The Coming of the Shadows

The Coming of the Shadows

A marvelous episode, in every possible way.

Everything changes in this episode. Everything. To begin, the Centauri Emperor, a kind man who has never had the opportunity to do what he wants, only what he is forced to do, comes to Babylon 5. The reason he gives is not the real reason.

G'Kar is ordered to kill the Emperor. He gladly begins this mission. Before he is able to, however, Emperor Turhan collapses in the hallway. He is taken to MedLab, where he gives a message to Dr. Franklin. The Doc delivers this message to G'Kar - it's an apology, saying the Centauri were wrong, and he is so sorry.

G'Kar is changed. He shares a drink with Londo in the bar. Londo looks rather nervous. And he should.

Without informing anyone in the government, Londo has taken it upon himself to have Mr. Morden's associates destroy a Narn colony, which means thousands of Narns dead. The drink he shares with G'Kar is taking place at the same time as the attack.

This was Lord Refa's second appearance ... He'll be back. The bastard.

By the end of this episode, the Narn and Centauri are at war, and no one is safe.

We also find out who the new guys we've seen in the background are. They're called "Rangers" and they're working with an old friend. That's right, Jeffery Sinclair is back, at least on the viewscreen ... He's the Ambassador for Earth. At least, as far as the President knows.

He's also the leader of a group of warriors, Minbari and Humans, called the Rangers. They are his eyes and ears on the station and ... elsewhere. Where we see them, we see him. (Lost note - The Ranger here is the same actor who played the Marshal who had arrested Kate on Lost. Another B5/Lost connection!)

Best lines of the episode:

Emperor Turhan - "How will this end?"
Kosh Naranek - "In fire."

5/5 stars

Re: The Coming of the Shadows

Because of horrible weather here, I didn't go into work today ... I wasn't able to get out of the driveway! So I did a marathon today ... I've watched the next 3 as well ... GROPOS, All Alone in the Night, and Acts of Sacrifice .. I'll post those soon.

Re: The Coming of the Shadows

I've decided that from now on I'll also try to do little write-ups about every episode. So here it goes:

A Race Through Dark Places

I liked this episode, even though I remembered it as slightly annoying. But i wasn't, it was actually quite good. And Bester was fun as ever hehe.

The whole 'I don't wanna pay for rent thing' was quite amusing aswell. Some of these B plots can be a bit silly sometimes, but I quite enjoyed this one.

Overall I'd give the episode a B.

2 of this week's 3...

And now the 3rd.

THE COMING OF SHADOWS

Now if more upcoming episodes are like this one, I'll definitely be enjoying this series. I especially liked Londo and G'Kar having to make personal, emotional choices, very well done.

This episode's Trek connection: the Prime Minister is played by Malachi Throne, who was in the Trek TOS episodes "The Menagerie" parts 1 & 2 as Commodore Jose Mendez, and in TNG's "Unification" parts 1 & 2 as the Romulan Senator Pardek.

It appears from this episode that not all male Centauri have this natural hair that spreads out like a fan. The emperor has a wig--are they all wigs? Or is it in his elder years his hair now lacks the ability to grow in its fanlike fashion? His guards have very close-fitting helmets, thus not allowing for this hairstyle. Perhaps it is for certain levels of society to adopt and display this style?

I've found Babylon 5 relies heavily on its dialogue, but there was a refreshing change in this episode. When the emperor collapses and then the spread of the news via his telepaths on the Centauri homeworld, all was presented with music only and no dialogue. I really enjoyed that.

Sinclair needs a haircut! I'm very glad he wasn't listed in the opening credits.

After Sheridan "threatening" Londo with having observers from Earth and Londo backing off, I *loved* Sheridan's tone and delivery when he says that he finds Londo's "gesture of goodwill will be appreciated for what it is, ambassador."

So what's Kosh's involvement? The emperor has never seen a Vorlon, why is it so important that he does, in his moment of death? Seems like there is more than meets the eye here, which I hope will be revealed about the Vorlons as time goes on.

There are these "Rangers" that make their appearance. Isn't there a separate B5 series or movie called "Legend of the Rangers"? Is it connected to this group somehow?

That's it for this week!

Sometimes, a rose is just a rose. As you've seen, this Emperor doesn't care about appearances. Londo, trying to get a picture with the TechnoMages, now that's appearances. But Turhan doesn't give it a second thought. He's dreamed of meeting a Vorlon, knowing how many Centauri have already lost their lives in an attempt to do just that (all of this, said in the episode).

Whether Kosh knew it and did it "just because" or Delenn had some involvement in getting him there, well, it's left up to the viewer. All we know for certain is that he did come down to let Turhan view him that one time.

There are these "Rangers" that make their appearance. Isn't there a separate B5 series or movie called "Legend of the Rangers"? Is it connected to this group somehow?

"Ranger" is the Human word for what they are. There is a movie that was a pilot for a proposed Rangers series, which would have followed a group of them on their ship. It did not get past the pilot. It'll be a while before we're ready for it, though ... It's set a few years after the body of Babylon 5 as you know it.
