Nimoy saying Kirk is dead is the pot calling the katra black

jayrath

Nimoy tells The New York Times that Kirk can't be in the new film: "His character died three movies ago, so it would have been very difficult to get him into this one.”

Yeah. About as difficult as returning Spock to life in TSFS. Or returning Scotty to life in "The Changeling." Or returning McCoy to life in "Shore Leave." Or-

Nimoy was still a dramatic focus in TSFS to an extent he wasn't in this new movie (even if he gets more screen-time).

Resurrecting Kirk and spending time on that would detract from establishing the new guys. And, like GEN, this movie is about passing the torch.

I'm not saying Kirk should be resurrected. I'm just saying that it's disingenuous of Nimoy to say that it would be "very difficult." This is science fiction, after all, and Trek has done it many times -- most notably for Nimoy's own character.

When I read this from Nimoy, I knew for sure that Shatner is in this movie. The whining by Shatner and the "unsympathetic" response by Nimoy is just ridiculous. Does Nimoy seriously think Star Trek fans are so stupid we don't remember what happened to his character in TSFS, or that it can't happen in science fiction? Please.

Maybe they DO think we're stupid enough to fall for this.

I'm going to agree with jayrath.

NO one is really dead in Star Trek.

I know Spock and his logic. But Shatner could easily still be very alive in the present Trek universe. All it'd take (if the script is even set up right...) is for Old Spock to slip the cadet-era Kirk a simple note saying something like "On Stardate xxxx, you will be attending the launch of the Enterprise-B. Carry several concealed phasers that won't easily fall out if you are violently jostled around a couple of times. You're going to need them."

The second Old Spock reenteres his own time, once-dead Kirk could come out from behind a corner. When Spock sees Kirk, Spock's face could light up a bit like it did the first time he saw the resurrected Kirk in "Amok Time."

Then cue Sam Cogley's ending.

Flamingo outfits, cohibas and 12yo single malts all 'round.

"Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" devoted almost two hours to resurrecting Spock. The result was a mediocre movie which made less money than its predecessor in first-run release.

Lousy precedent, there.

sums it up. Star Trek XI: The Search for Kirk doesn't inspire me.

Still, I'll believe Shatner isn't in it when the credits roll. I wouldn't put a massive charade like this past the Shat.

Re: Nimoy saying Kirk is dead is the pot calling the katra b

Maybe I'm wrong, but I took that Nimoy's comment to mean that it would be difficult to get him into THIS particular movie because the script was not written about preventing Shatner's death in Generations. Who knows? Maybe another movie after this one can be made in the future include Shatner.

Re: A friendship ended

I can't believe it The near fifty year friendship of Nimoy and Shatner, over. They were as brothers once. No more. And the cause of the schism? This movie. This movie WE demanded be made! Is it really worth it? Is it really worth Trek 11 being made if it's going to end the friendship of these legendary figures? They are both nearly 80 years old. Not long to go for either of them on this planet. And they will die apart, alone. All because of Trek 11.

Call off the production. Tear down the sets. It's not worth it, folks. It's not worth it.

Very funny post MadBaggins! ;) At least I hope it was intended to be humorous; sometimes it's hard to tell with fans here...

By then, Shatner could better portray the aging Captain Pike.

You know, the one in the wheelchair ;)

Beep beep! :rommie:

I was going to reply Vulcan Soul, but AWESOME Spock avatar of yours totally mesmerized me, and then I forgot what I was going to say.

^ Ah, ha ha ha haaaah!

Can we have a civil debate and not poke fun? So many here equate discussion with heresy. Derision does not equal wisdom. Say something with some rational validity, and I will bow to your superior views. Until then, to clarify for a second time:

There's nothing wrong with humor.

And as for your point: yes, of course it would be easy for them to create a story where Kirk survives; is resurrected; wakes up; comes out of the Nexus again; has a holodeck poker game with Spock, Genghis Khan, and Colonel Klink; or any of a number of other ways to get Shatner in the film.

But just because it would be easy to do in an absolute sense (because this is SF) in no way means that it would therefore be easy to do in the story they've written. Given what Nimoy has said about the script (which he has read, or course), it seems obvious that this is the context in which to understand his comments. It's possible that is simply not what the story is about.

And it's time for Shatner (and others) to accept that.
